Road Cycling Essentials

Rode to Brighton (again) this time with a mate who is brand new to cycling.

I took the Cinelli to see how it was on a long ride and I beat my PB on Ditchling Beacon by 11s! Looks like I should sell the Rose as clearly an alu bike with heavy wheels is faster uphill than a carbon bike.:p

...or maybe it is because I now weigh 55.5KG :o

Anyone come across any decent deals on jerseys, i need to get a couple more for commuting but dont want to spend silly money on them - looking for usual, 3 pockets, not baggy and ideally a zipped pocket?

Considering all my options for frames and builds am I crazy if I buy an R3? Going to wait until the real sales start and also see what the Cervelo 2014 range looks like. If they bring internal cabling or an R7 then I might have to reconsider but an R3 is currently top of my list.
I like the R3. Classic looking race bike. Some of the colourways look a bit gash. The cheapest I have seen one recently (frame only) is £1400 and that seems quite expensive still. At that price you would be better picking up something like this.

Frame prices do seem a bit mad given what they are and thats why I am seriously considering the FM066 SL from China. To be honest I think people might think I was a bit of a **** if I turned up on a Cervelo given my modest level of ability on a bike. Thats why no branding might work better!

I've got this chap telling me I've ridden it more often and quicker than I'm letting on lol! A few of the guys set PR, but I didn't, mainly because it's the first time Strava has recorded I think, on the valley section me and graham were out in front for.

They are a nice bunch of guys, the guy we got in towards EK smokes about 20 fags a day :D

You are quick up climbs, I bet you can go quicker though.

Was a good day and nice to put a face to the name.

Likewise!

Yeah, I PRed right through that whole stretch with the tailwind. Only done that bit all the way to Douglas 3 times, but took nearly 5 mins off of my previous best today! 12 miles at an average speed of about 24mph! :o Mostly i've turned off at Glespin in the past, done that 7 times before and took around 3 mins off of my best on that section as well. Excellent! :D

My main bike is an R5 though so two R5's is a bit OTT? Although I have considered it :D. That's why I'm wondering whether having an R5 & R3 would be a bit ridiculous too? I can get an R3 for around £1200 at the moment from a LBS which comes with the Cervelo life time warranty as they're an authorised dealer. I reckon if I wait a month for 2014 models and the sales to properly begin I could get one a bit cheaper though.

I would go for the Scott CR1 @ £499 over the FM066 SL tbh. And I wouldn't worry about what people think as long as you're happy and enjoying yourself that's all that really matters :)

Well, had a century planned today and was ticking along nicely until 70 miles in when I bonked. I suppose I could have fitted in another village or something but meh, still had a lovely cycle! Don't quite understand why the Strava stats are so different.

^What was the twitter pic?

I'm in bolton to watch my friend take part in the ironman, just took a visit to transition one and some of the bikes there were ridiculous.

Oh my ! You already have an R5 - gulp. Won't anything else feel like a step down. You couldn't really have an R3 as a hack or winter trainer could you? I reckon I would be tempted by an R3 framset if it was sub £1000 so lets wqit and see what happens when the 2014 bikes come out. If I had an R5, unless money is of no object I'd be tempted to have a lesser value frame (than the r3) but make sure it was finished nicely and had some nice wheels.

stupid motoactv.. 35 miles today but the thing crashed 3 times and couldn't find gps for like 5ish.. :o :/ oh well.. it was fun and lycra kept my bum nice and comfy :o quite it like tbh.. :)

good purchase imo.

Could be real but....That screams fake and attention seeking to me.

Well, someone's tweeted the image to the Birmingham Police, so I'm sure they'll look into it, particularly with the current focus on idiocy on twitter.

Looking for that image, I came across breaking news of a 44 year old lady cyclist killed in Manchester this afternoon after being hit by a car :(

Ladies and gentlemen, we did it.

:o:D tbh its expected, i mean i don't normally do 30+ or even 20+ rides because i simply have no time for it, but lately i've been trying to get out as much as i can and go to random places.. preferably out of london :)

annoying this is that i don't know the roads that well and i got lost like 10 times today, any good/cheap-ish options for mountable gps navs?

bryton 50 looks quite good tbh.

id love to get something bellow 200 so garmin 810 is out of question.

We were out doing some bits of the route this morning so saw all the road closed signs. It's a bit breezy here and the weather forecast for tomorrow isn't great. I hope it stays dry but not too hot for anyone taking part!

The forecast for today was no good either but it's pretty nice here now so fingers crossed!
