Are those going to be used for your custom wheels that you were looking at?

Yeah, although my plans have changed...

I originally looked at a custom build set of quality hubs (DT Swiss 350's or 240's) with some cheap-ish semi-aero rims (25/30mm) as an 'everyday' replacement for my Campagnolo Khamsin (after they needed new bearings @2000 miles ~£30 & I realised these cheap hubs/bearings would probably need them again after the next 2000). I was quoted ~£400 which was a little higher than I could justify considering as around the same time I formulated a medium-long term plan which would be to replace my 'Do Everything Defy' with something else disc equipped for wet weather/winter riding. I would then rebuild the Defy into summer use (or more likely replace with a carbon frame).

My medium-long term plan hinged slightly on a house move/purchase (to be sure about my work commute and the money I had available). As that's progressing really well (keep your eyes peeled here for some house-porn pics over the coming months) my bike options are going to be very open and I'll be picking up a new bike hopefully in the autumn deals (or before). Basically this means my expensive everyday wheelset on the Defy isn't going to need to weather as many (if any) winter miles and sounds even more like a waste of money - as not compatible with new disc bike which will see the winter weather/roads.

Amongst all this I picked up a set of Shimano RS81's in a Ribble sale, the price I got them for (£260) does mean I've 'replaced' my Campagnolo Khamsin with them anyway as a 'summer' wheelset. It just so happens they're more than light enough for any climbing I'll want to do, while also being cheap enough to use every day (I'm using them for commuting as well as leisure riding). A few days before that deal I also picked up a second hand set of Roval wheels in need of a rebuild/repair. I couldn't return them (private sale). A perfect SL35 (alloy front) and a AL45 (carbon rear), which had a broken spoke and needed new bearings. Both seem to be 'DT Swiss internals' housed in an alloy Roval branded casing with straight pull Aerolite spokes. The rims and spokes alone are worth what I paid for them (£120 ex postage) as they're in almost perfect condition, so spending a bit of money servicing the rear hub is my first option. If that starts to look expensive then a DT Swiss 350s is only around ~£100 and I could always get a matching front for ~£40... But then that's another £150 on top of the £150 already spent...!
Needless to say it's a bit of a 'project' which I'm going to use to learn the basics of wheelbuilding with! ;)

My end result will be 3 sets: a light 'summer' set (RS81's), a deeper section set (Roval) and some winter/training/turbo wheels (Khamsin) for my Defy.

Got a Wiggle price match on two 6800 shifters for £150.. will order those and brake cables and give it a complete overhaul if bike shop don't want to replace it.

Shifters come with gear cable outers as well as inners right?

Probably will order the same bar tape that came on my bike (Cube half red/half black) from bike-discount - doesn't seem to be any UK suppliers stocking it.

Pretty sure my 5800 shifters came with just the inners.

THat's 2 rides in the last week that i've felt awful. Nothing in the legs, really didn't enjoy either. Nothing massive both like 30/35 miles but about a month ago I was feeling great on the bike - loved it!

Strange one. Got my axle vice, grease etc so going to try and service my DT Swiss hubs in the next day or so.

Eat and sleep through it? Are you carrying a minor cough or cold? I slow down and then the sniffles appear a few days later

Just spent a bit of time adjusting seat position on my bike tonight (gone up about 15mm), but thinking I could do with a better seat as well.

Is the charge spoon still the best value general recommendation?

yeah - feeling a touch run down but nothing I would say that's obvious. Will keep an eye on things - need to get back to my vitamins/cod liver oil tablets etc as I do think they help.

Good afterwork blast tonight, fairly decent avg speed too! It was so humid for the first 12miles or so and then on the way back we got caught in an absolute monsoon, the roads flooded within about 30 seconds!

Oh wow! Sounds like you've got it all planned out then! What bike are you looking at?

Glad you've sorted it :D

What the &*&!!? It's bone dry over here, must only be 15 miles apart! Madness.

Those who have the lifeline wall rack, how deep a section front wheel would they take, and would they take mountain bike (2.25" tyres)?

You must have missed the monsoon that London got this afternoon! Smashing thunderstorm.

Glad you've sorted it :D

Well, trip to original bike shop tomorrow if I can fit it in around work and see what they say. Otherwise splashing out the cash on new shifters. Original bike shop is actually over in your direction - Slough! :p
