I avoided the rain, but the wind for the first ten miles or so of my evening ride was pretty grim. Fortunately I turned South at that point and it got better. I'd gone out to do a climb that I'd randomly seen from the train window when going to Southport a few weeks back and fancied doing. It turns out I have done it once before, but nearly two years ago, so I scored a PR fairly easily on it.

I think I've traced the creaking on my bike to my saddle, rather than the BB. If I stand up and pedal it stops, and I can just about replicate the noise if I push back and forth on the saddle. I think I'll have to take it off and clean the rails and so on.

Also, I'm sure we've covered this before, but does anyone know why Garmin and Strava are inconsistent in terms of average speeds? For my 30 miles this evening, Garmin Connect says 16.1mph but Strava says 15.9mph. A bit silly but it would be nice if Strava showed the higher speed as well, haha!

The wind was pretty horrendous at times yesterday, yeah. Rain today is far worse than I experienced yesterday though. Pretty grim, though my new Sidi waterproof shoes and my DHB windslam jacket did a decent job of keeping me dry and warm in the most important parts.

Regarding average speed, as already mentioned by Grudas, it's basically down to the different ways they calculate average speeds. This is mostly in the form of different definitions of you travelling slow enough to have "stopped". I never look at the Garmin site any more as it's just frustrating at times :p I also always assume that the moving speed shown on my Garmin device is probably going to be 0.1-0.4mph above what Strava says. It's a pleasant surprise when the two match up.

I also got saddle creaking on my Tioga Spyder. Spraying gt85 into the area where the rails joins the saddle body seemed to sort it, though I had to do this multiple times over a few weeks.

Anyone have any experience with the garmin edge touring? I'm thinking the 810 is maybe a tad too expensive for me :(

I think the limitations on the touring are lack of ant+ connectivity, so you can't use a dedicated speed sensor (just GPS speed) or a cadence or power sensor. Those things aren't essential, though, so if the thing you really want is decent mapping then yes, the touring is definitely a good bet. Alternatively, the 500 or 510 have ant+ but the route guidance is just a breadcrumb trail rather than a proper map. I make do fine with a 500, though, cycle all over the show.

Knee is kinda getting better but I think dead lifts and squats are off this week..

Monday - Heavy Squat Tripples
Tuesday - 2 x 20min @/+ FTP
Wednesday - Deadlift and Squat volume
Thursday - Welcome rest
Friday - Deadlift & Squat speed work
Saturday - rest
Sunday - usually a ride out but with gross weather due I'm looking at a nice long stint with Trainer Road and 5 x 20 mins at FTP. Very little rest for the wicked it seems! (Hope the knee sorts itself soon).

Bit of a subjective one this but after Tuesdays turbo session and firmly making myself suffer I've come to realise I sweat insane amounts with no airflow, to the point I was ringing my bibshorts out:p. So I need fan.

Research points to a high velocity floor fan being recommended. Any input in what anyone has and did/didn't get on with would be great.:)

I don't want to freeze to death but I don't want it to be ineffective either. Around the £40-60 is the budget but happy to spend more if it'll serve me well to do so in the long run. Don't think I'll be able to get anything with a remote for my budget.

It's the main selling point of Garmin devices. They'll report faster speeds and more elevation than just using Strava on your phone. That's why you buy one!

It'll depend on your autopause settings. Strava takes an average including stops etc normally, where as Garmin will look at your moving time only.

I have windows wide open and a fairly average desk fan and manage okay. You'll still sweat ridiculously but it's nowhere near as bad as no fan at all. I'm sure the floor fan would be fine but it might also be overkill :)

5x20 minute FTP sounds horrific. 3x20 minute absolutely destroyed me last time I did it

The speed data is recalculated by Strava when you upload anyhow. L2peddle yo :p

Anyone know of any Android apps that can navigate around a cycle ride but still show some info like HR, Cadence and speed?

Currently using my sony z3c (waterproof which is handy) and a polar bluetooth hrm/cadence sensor. Going to try mounting it on the handlebars this weekend.

Went out for a blast last night after work with a mate, he didn't have much time so we stayed fairly local and aimed at being out for an hour. I hammered it home (to dump my bag) before going to meet him, we had a bit of a mix up and were waiting in 2 different places lol (). Winds were brutal in places so we paced out the 'link road' with him in front (headwind) and I did the return leg (side/tail wind). I was feeling strong and continued out to Home Lacy, couple of climbs I really attacked and was very surprised to drop him (he's a much stronger rider!). I must've been on a mission! By the time we got to Mordiford my toes were numb and I could feel the lactate quite a bit (hardly surprising really! :p), Richie pulled us back towards Hereford as I really felt like I was going to cramp up, again there was a bit of a headwind (and a slight gradient). Still a great ride, 16 miles at 18.8mph average for the part we rode together.

HR data has gone a bit crazy. All year I've not been able to hit my anywhere close to max HR, but today I've seen 205+bpm. Maybe my HRM is playing up.

That does sound a bit high, is it a Garmin? Check the strap I've heard when they start to play up it can be bad contacts (and why many people change the straps), could also be from a bad contact with your chest too! 205 does sound quite high!

*drool*
That is rarther yummy. Not a fan of the color tho, Giant have a blue/black combo which i think looks the nuts when seen in the flesh.
Like my Defy 1 2015? :D

Bought some Jagwire cables on the 27th at 15:45 and they arrived yesterday, that is seriously fast postage!

Shocked and happy all at the same time :D

I'm so very tempted to get some, did you 'bay them? Any particular seller people are using I should steer towards?

I can keep up my 120ish miles of commuting/week + 4 days at the gym -;

tuesday - chest/biceps
thursday - shoulders/traps
saturday - back/triceps
sunday - legs

but I've done something to me knee and I just can't risk it this week with deadlifts, will just add more volume to BOR's and It'll be fine I think.

legs will be skipped too(took a random 4 months off leg training to motivate my self to cycle more on sundays because I can't do both) come september and I'll be back to it.

Torgue setting do I need for a MTB and a road bike cassette?

Having them both off this weekend.

To be honest I've never torqued my cassette lock ring, I've always done it up 'man tight', tight enough that it 'cracks' (the noise!) two or 3 times.

and my DHB windslam jacket did a decent job of keeping me dry and warm in the most important parts.

I'm sure I asked before, but is this the windslam you have (the fleecy one) or the Roubaix? I've been meaning to get one/either but struggled to make my mind up as they no longer do the Blue one. Half tempted to get the Fluro to wear in place of jersey & jacket for morning commutes, but as jersey & jacket gives me more options I'm not sure.

I sweat tons too, usually my head & back/chest rather than underarm/feet/etc. Although I generally turbo in the cooler weather and outside (so not needed a fan yet). I'm trying to say - depending where you sweat most will depend where you want your fan, a floor fan may not shift enough air to your head/shoulder area and a smaller one mounted on a shelf may work better.

You could get a couple of really strong ones, mount them in front and simulate strong headwinds for some real training! ;)

Currently using my sony z3c (waterproof which is handy) and a polar bluetooth hrm/cadence sensor. Going to try mounting it on the handlebars this weekend.

I used to use IPBike on my Samsung S5 (with ANT+ sensors and HRM). It worked well and I know there was mapping on it, but I never used it. It's a very powerful piece of software that fills a major gap which Strava initially missed (ANT+ support). Strava are now in beta adding ANT+, but I've not bothered to try it yet. The developer of IPBike is very active and it's easy to communicate with him asking how to tweak things. I felt rather guilty for never buying it & I will probably use it again at some point.

I toyed with bar mounting my S5 (tried 2 different mounts) but came to the conclusion - spending £60+ on a good quality mount (I could trust) to mount my £500 smartphone on my bars to use some fiddly software was a fools errand. My money was better spent on a dedicated Garmin unit that would give me proper waterproofing, more features, longer battery life and better, cheaper mounts.

I've not used the android app but I believe RideWithGPS will do that.

It works but I found it's tracking pretty iffy, only tried it once (garmin battery was low).

To be honest I'm more than happy to talk you through all the stuff you need and point you at the right sites/etc. Assuming you've got a basic bike toolkit most likely the only thing you'll need to buy is a torque wrench.

I'd like to take you up on that offer then FT :) How did you go about deciding your frame size?

More crazy HR data on the way in this morning. 200-215bpm  It was fine on my MTB ride last night, so am a little confused, perhaps it's the BCAA's :D

There are some online calculators for frame size but I basically compared the geometry to a bike that I knew fitted me well and then winged it a little. For example, the below frame that I bought in the largest size had very similar geometry to my PX XLS frame, only with a longer top tube. I went with a shorter stem to make up for this.

http://flyxii.com/en/products/flx-fr-602-matt.html

For yourself you could try the FLX-FR-603 rather than the 602 - I only avoided it because it didn't come in a large enough size for me.

With Flyxii the best way to order is to get Skype and add them as contacts. You'll want the frame, seat post, seat clamp, a spare derailleur hanger, headset and headset spacers. They will invoice you via Paypal. They asked me to pay in two installments, one of $400 and one of $80 - I think this is so they could just include the $80 invoice on the packaging so it would be charged less at customs. Obviously the customs thing is slightly dodgy so I'll leave it up to you how you want to approach that.

edit:

In case you don't have my google doc link here it is again: https://docs.google.com/document/d/1pPKObhdzgskhTY8G26SNbw3eqgmc1-rW4ExwbQAJJCA/edit?usp=sharing

I ordered the hydraulic brake kit from here: http://www.bike24.com/1.php?content...102807;page=1;menu=1000,4,320,322;mid=0;pgc=0

In addition to that you'll need all the items in my google doc - mechs, cables, etc. I've just now added a copy of the CRC order receipt to the google doc actually. Cables and torque wrench I bought from Wiggle (I'll add details to the gdoc in a mo). Finally you'll need carbon assembly compound, anti-seize paste and regular grease.

edit2:

Oh, you'll also want rotors, they don't come with the brake kit. I bought some cheap Ashimas from ebay.

You'll also need a bleed kit as this particular part doesn't come with the brake kit either: http://www.chainreactioncycles.com/shimano-bleed-kit-m575/rp-prod34710

Thanks FT :) Confused already, but I'll have a good read up over the weekend. I guess the problem is, I don't know of a bike that currently fits. My PX is too small and my CX too big :P I'll take a look at some calculators though, and go for something with a more relaxed geometry (than the PX). Thanks again :)
