No worries. Feel free to drop me a message if you have any specific questions.

Have you ever had a bike fit? It could be worth getting a cheap one so you've got a better idea of your requirements.

You know...I just checked and it's not even a Windslam that I have. It's the Turbulence:

Doh! :p May try myself a Windslam/Roubaix if I can decide which is the warmest (and then choose the other!)

Cables and torque wrench I bought from Wiggle

Which Torque do you have mate? I got myself the X-Tools one from CRC (£23), I opted out of the one with all the bits (£58) but now need to get some... It's a 1/4" fitting and most of the bit sets seem to be 3/8":mad:

Yep, Retul bike fitting. But it was done on the PX which as I said was a little too small. I can email you the report I received, if you have time to take a quick look?

I got mine from Wiggle. It's the Lifeline Essential one I think - there's a link to it in the bottom of the google doc I posted above :)

With regards to the jacket, my reasoning was that I wanted one that I could wear in summer rain without massively overheating - so I went for the thinnest material with vents for the armpits. If I want to be warmer I'll just stick an extra base layer on underneath (which I've not needed to do for ages now).

edit: This is the wrench - http://www.wiggle.co.uk/lifeline-essential-torque-wrench-set/?sku=5360671412

More than happy to have a look at it though I can't guarantee I'll be able to help much. My email is thefrenchtart gmail com - obviously 'fill in the blanks' ;) So when you had your fit they told you the PX is too small? Did they not suggest a way to work around that? I was under the impression that if a frame was slightly too small you could fit a longer stem and/or make other adjustments.

I toyed with bar mounting my S5 (tried 2 different mounts) but came to the conclusion - spending £60+ on a good quality mount (I could trust) to mount my £500 smartphone on my bars to use some fiddly software was a fools errand. My money was better spent on a dedicated Garmin unit that would give me proper waterproofing, more features, longer battery life and better, cheaper mounts.

Yeah I think in the long run I'll end up with a garmin for the road bike and stick to phone + strava for commuting and shorter rides. The mount I got is pretty solid so should be ok for the first few shorter rides while I get back in to it.

Going to give RideWithGPS that FrenchTart recommended, it's the software the local club uses to show some of the routes they do.

To be honest I've never torqued my cassette lock ring, I've always done it up 'man tight', tight enough that it 'cracks' (the noise!) two or 3 times.

Thats what i were going to do but seeing as though the rating is on the lock ring ill just do it that way :D

I'm so very tempted to get some, did you 'bay them? Any particular seller people are using I should steer towards?

Yeah, ill email you the link i used matey :)

yeah not sure on which garmin I'd want. Something with turn by turn and possible euro maps would be good. I've used my mates 705 before and found it really slow for longer routes and navigation, even just zooming in and out of maps.

The 810 I have is fine for that kind of thing - you can get maps for free via the talkytoaster site.

Only thing to be aware of is that in those kits the brake cables often aren't compressionless - matters more if you have mechanical discs.

I use RidewithGPS for all my mapping, it's so useful and easy! I've used the Strava 'route builder' before too, equally as easy but doesn't quite have the info rwgps does.

A Garmin is so easy and quick to use that there really is no reason once you have one to use a phone.

Exactly! My 810 even came with 2 mounts.

Thanks mate!

My 810 isn't quick to zoom in/out, I'd expect the 1000/Touring to be better?

That's 1/4" too, wonder if Lifeline do a bit set...

can you make routes up on the 810 directly say on holiday away from a PC?

You can do this in a round about way with a Samsung smartphone - my S5 has a microSD card slot, I could create a route on ridewithgps website (not their app I don't think?) on my fone, 'export' the .gpx/.tcx file and save it onto the microSD (providing it's been in the garmin before the folder structure will be there and contain a 'NewFiles' folder), then put that microSD into the garmin and it should import the new route! ;)

There may be some way of importing a route into Garmin Connect which would then sync to the Garmin but I'm not totally convinced it's that flexible (Garmin software doesn't tend to be very full of cutting edge/useful features, they struggle to even get it stable).
