David, any recommendations on guards with tight clearance but with mudguard mounts?

Just wondering if I persevere with these RB Longs in the autumn or replace. Spending £20-£40 every autumn seems to be my 'long-term' plan at the moment

Edit: You'll be fine 700x23. My Defy 1 has tight clearance and I've had both under (currently running 700x25's). I wouldn't be able to run bigger!

Regular raceblades suck. Only the longs are any good :p

Roady - I'd probably be tempted to look at chromoplastic or bluemels but be prepared to mod them. I think you're always going to have to go the slightly modded route if you have really tight clearance.

Brutal cycle to work today after a night out and four hours sleep. Managed to get there only 45 minutes late. Success.

Pedal home felt like I was going to die but warmed up into a nice rhythm.

How would you guys feel about wireless electronic group sets? Aesthetically, I can see the appeal. From a mischief perspective it could be funny if you could hack a friend's GS on a climb :)

I ask only because SRAM have been testing such a system recently: http://www.cyclingweekly.co.uk/news/latest-news/sram-wireless-what-to-expect-167975

Yeah it's been around for quite a while, in theory nice idea, but kind of to a problem that really doesn't exist. Di2 wires are tiny and internal, and a wireless system requires batteries for all components. One di2 battery is enough for me!

Spec me a 24 hole rear hub (light would be nice, but durability is equally or more important). Looking at:

Dura Ace 9000 (no Shimano hubs are available in 24h in 105/Ultegra)
Hope Mono RS
Miche Primato

I'm tempted by Shimano purely because it's not cartridge bearing based, although it is the most spendy.

Chris Kings sent over from eBay.com?
Price doesn't work out too ridiculous if you can find some factory seconds like these... http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/NEW-Chris...780?pt=LH_DefaultDomain_0&hash=item1c51a3259c

**** me, I think I got lucky this evening. Swapped the disc wheel off and when I went to undo the skewer I literally touched the Allen key in the fitting and BLAM it sheared and flew to bits!

Might have been minutes away from that thing letting go on me while riding

I never check my skewers I guess it's time to start.
The company who made your bike/skewer if aftermarket might be interested in finding out why it failed

@Roady re mudguards... SKS Chromoplastics are great, but a bit of a pig to fit. Bontrager do some similar ones with a built in mechanism for adjusting the length of the stays which looks very practical if not quite as aesthetically pleasing as well set up Chromoplastics.

oh no, not those mudguards !
have you ever been behind a guy with them on ? I get covered in crap!
they are good for your own self, but not people behind you :p

That's my approach to most TR stuff actually - work out a cadence that is in the right ball park for power and then stick to that. Watching my actual power is annoying as it fluctuates far more.

I've often found it takes me 45-60 mins on the road to get 'natural' and it doesn't seem to be much different on the turbo.

I do try to vary cadence at sustained power output as it's more challenging and also more indicative of a real road ride.

Also agreed regarding time and rain. I'm a cyclist first and weights/gym person second (and social life is a far distant 10th or something :p) so I have a lot more time for cycling. My weights routine suffers far more - I do part of it at lunch after cycling home and then another bit very quickly when I cycle home again at the end of work.

I'm still trying to find the right balance between spinning and my gym time. Just switching to something a little more intense but lower frequency. I've quickly learnt that a hard spin on a Tuesday with moderate training volume either side and again on Friday and then a challenging spin at the weekend is a bit too much.

Annoyingly I like to push myself, ride hard and see progress but to the detriment of my lifting. So rather than blast both I'll just be taking a more moderate approach and let them both progress slowly :)

Eh? I don't see how full length mudguards can be bad news for whoever is behind you...

To be honest the rear guard on the Chromos could do with an extra flap at the bottom. I'm tempted to mod one onto mine. They're great guards other than that though and certainly not deserving of a bad rep.

I do a bit of cadence work now and again but it's something I really should do more of. My road riding tends to stick pretty closely to 90 so it's not really that it would be more "realistic" for me - it's more that I have kind of lost the ability to peddle well at low cadences :p

Training volume is a massive pain the arse I find. I recover fairly well from cycling given all the training I've done but I do wish my legs would recover faster. I need some kind of topical steroid that I can just rub into them after ride or something :p
