Roady....yikes.

Nice ride in this morning. Was trying to just concentrate on my cadence, and was happy to have been able to keep the average up like that. Also discovered during a little steep climb that I've lost the use of the lowest gear so that was tougher than it should have been...will have to see if I can adjust that at lunch time.

Woohoo, bike frame back from the powder coaters:

They've made a really good job of it. It's really smooth and well finished, and it looks like they've done their job masking all the threads and so on. I'll probably put it back together over the course of this week and then give it a ride sometime, see if it's any faster now it's red ;)[/QUOTE]

Looks a good finish.
I'm looking at getting a frame either powdercoated or sprayed, only thing putting me off powder is a matt finish. Yours looks quite polished thought, is there an additional process you can get or is it a layer of lacquer?

If you don't mind me asking what sort of price did it cost to have it done & how long was the frame away for?

I'm not sure whether you can get it done with a matt finish - it's probably worth asking. Or do you mean you want it glossy? It is pretty shiny, but you can get metallic or "candy" colours which are shinier still, though they do cost more.

It was done by Triple S in Bradford. From what I gather, they are very well experienced (they mainly do motorbike and classic car parts but they do bikes as well) and have been doing this for decades, so they know what they're doing. They know how to handle bike frames in terms of masking the threads and plugging holes and so on, which is where a lot of cheaper outfits fall down - you'll not thank someone for doing the job cheap when it turns out you need to get your bottom bracket threads re-cut.

The cost was £102 including VAT and return carriage. On top of that I'd paid £12 or so to ship it there in the first place. It's probably way more than the frame is even worth, but I wanted it doing and I had the money. The cost depends on whether you get the frame and fork done (I only had the frame done) and the colour and so on. Some people will say that £100 is a lot for powdercoating, and that you could get it done by some bloke in a shed for £50, but I really think it's one of those things where you get what you pay for. Maybe I could have had it done badly twice for the same money, but what good is that? I've read stories of people getting frames back from cheap outfits with very uneven covering, lumps and flecks in the surface, ruined threads, etc.

In terms of timing, a courier took it from me on the Tuesday and it was back with me the following Friday, so it was away about 10 days all told. Probably in their hands for under a week, once you factor in the courier time.

I can totally see myself using them again to do my single speed bike in a few years once that gets dinged or I fancy a change of colour, or if I end up buying any old bikes in the future, which is pretty likely to be honest :p

Feeling very left out - I've never partaken in lubricating the, you know, bits, but it sounds fun though!

I think I've done it once, for a 100 miler, but I never bother otherwise. I've never had any real problems with it. I sometimes get a bit of chafeage in the same sort of geographical region that Roady was referring to, but it's nothing too serious.

Thanks for the reply, I'm looking for a nice gloss finish & £100 was the sort of price I had in mind.

guys that wear Castelli tops..

I have heard these come up small ?

I wear Large tops and bib shorts, even my castelli bib shorts are still in "large", if I ordered a castelli top in "Large" would you think it would fit or be too small ?

I think it's one of those things... I personally only do it on longer rides (1.5hr+) where I know i'll be sweating/pushing it. Shorter rides & commuting I don't bother.

Can only apologise to you all for my rather graphic description but I honestly didn't think it was that bad, at least I didn't supply pictures lol :p

That looks bloody awesome! Frame is good compared to the OTT designs coming out, but the paintwork makes it!

I like it, but only in the kinda way that it stands out and looks very different.

Personally I think you'd be ok if your normal sizing jerseys and shorts are the same.

I wear Large in DHB but although shorts fit, jerseys are large so I size down to Medium. I wear Northwave in XXL and XL shorts, yet Large in tops.

I tried an XXL Castelli Gabba 2 and it's slightly too large, I imagine an XL will fit me (probably means I'm XXL in Castelli shorts but not tried any recently).

Thinking back, I did have some discomfort when doing lots of turbo sessions - I assume from not moving out the saddle for an hour. Will keep it mind for next winter when I plan to hit the turbo more

I don't think my gabba is especially small but my other long sleeve castelli, is very slim in the arms. I would say if you're a large bib you'd be fine in a large, unless large is very tight on you in other brands.

Thanks Solid

On another note, just read an article on road Cycling UK about shoes, and although I'm desperate for new ones (mine are Brocken but still useable) I found it an interesting read, not sure what to buy now

I think ill get some cheap ones, might even get the same ones but next version up, hmm
