I'm looking for a decent balance of durability and speed, so they're probably both a bit on the slow side!

Evans have the Vittoria Rubino Pro for £15 on clearance which looks alright...

I think these are what I have, they are awful for rolling, but they have good puncture protection and grip alright, but they're just a bit uncommunicative. Just an average all round tyre. I'm going to try some of the lifelines on my commuter when they come back in stock.

I'd disagree tbh - you're not gonna get much Genesis for your money for a grand. You'd get an Equilibrium with Tiagra and bad rim brakes - whereas a grand would get you 105 and decent discs with many other brands.

And I say this as someone who's main bike is a Genesis.

At Evans you can get a Synapse with 105 and (mediocre) discs for 1k, or the Charge Plug 4 with 105 and (decent) TRP Spyres.

Well, it's something for you to decide on a test ride. Modern Tiagra is almost on a level with 105 anyway, great choice for a first/commuter bike. For a bit more the CdF 20 is a solid option, 725 frame and hydraulic TRP brakes.

I actually think the Synapse is pretty overpriced for a generic endurance bike with normal road tyre clearance, but there you go :p I also haven't seen any reviews or anything of Charge since they switched to alu frames and carbon forks, no idea how they are now.

I definitely don't think the Genesis (or any if I'm honest) brand tax is worth it.

You can get steel frames with a higher grade steel for less money so it's absolutely a brand tax. My old Cotic, for example.

Good luck finding a non branded bike then ;) Cotic just seem to do cr-mo frames, which is the minimum for what Genesis use.

my continental for 2k miles now, commuting through worst of weathers and still no punctures! rear needs replacing tho because it is getting a flat..
My rear GP4 Seasons was looking flat and a bit worn in places (down to the puncture layer from potholes & road debris) but the front perfectly ok. I've only punctured them from pinch punctures too!
State of the rear:

Will be quite happy fitting the front again but will probably buy a new rear...! Quite surprised how cracked they've gone, but like I say, still going strong when I removed them! :D
Do you mean Lithions?
That's the ones, close enough! ;)
Whats the deal with these then, ie cheapest way to get a smart trainer that works with the zwifts etc, and isnt crap?
Pretty much, just make sure the trainer has the smarts you wants for the zwifts! :p;)

Hmm, could've sworn I read previously that it was a higher grade of Reynolds. Can't find that any more.

Either way, Genesis brand tax is a real thing and I don't really get why anyone would argue otherwise.

Just been looking at some DHB on wiggle as it happens, too.

Alé shorts similar price and would expect them to have better pads than DHB. Just make sure she wants bibbed shorts - they're quite different for fit on women compared to us men.

Rapha quire regularly have womens in stock (when the mens is out) during their sales.

Are you sure she'll wear non-Canyon branded? ;):D

PX 'liquidation' sale has an additional 50% off with code 'PXSLS50'. Only real deals I can see (not had time to read up on):

I dunno, there are a lot more options for cr-mo stuff just because it's easier to make (which is why a lot of people like it for touring, easy to get repaired too). Verenti Substance, for example. But you can't generally get that on cycle to work. But for higher grade Reynolds stuff? I haven't seen anything significantly cheaper. I haven't seen much else at all. And their alu bikes are pretty much in line with any of the other big manufacturers, and often on sale.

Incidentally, good offer on an entry level road bike:

The hell you been doing to that tyre? Eating it? :p
Too many other riders trying to catch it! ;)
that rear looks baaad! all the cracks? where do you keep your bikes? direct sunglight? :D
Garage (dark) at home but in direct sunlight while at work... To be honest it can't be that as the front would also be cracked?! Must be all the pushing I've been doing...
I reiterate my earlier comments about 4Seasons being nice tyres but without longevity :p
Looks like that and I probably hit 2-3 potholes per commute, still no punctures (from debris) and still way more grip than P4E's! ;):p

I somehow managed to have a flat on my rear when I looked at my bike in the office. Just changed it out for a new tube. No idea what it was as old tube seems to be holding air OK too.

Also figured out how to adjust my di2. I wasn't able to get 28 cog, it wasn't aligned, but one youtube video later and I've worked it out. It's actually really nice and easy.

I just bought some 28s with associated tubes, to see what they're like. I've got 25s with conti grand prix TTs on at the moment and wanted to see what 28 deal was all about.

Really? With no punctures and no loss of grip, why replace? Maybe I just need to corner harder to wear them more evenly? :p
