Road Cycling

Thanks, will check all this and report back. I can flex the rim with my hand and have it contact the pad whilst secured in the drop out. I expect some movement but perhaps there's still too much and they need to sort the tension properly.

Will get a video.

WINTER IS COMING.
Sealed bearing or cup and cone? Is the flex the rim itself (sorted by more spoke tension), the spokes themselves (not strong/tight enough, possibly need new spokes!) or the hub/axle (likely needs tightening if cup & cone, or a damaged/worn hub/axle which the LBS should've spotted).
Wutt-wattage more like?! :p;)

Tried to show that there's no movement at the dropouts and that it looks to be entirely spoke related.

I called the LBS yesterday who will take another look on Thursday and check the OE recommended spoke tensions. I think they just aren't tight enough... considering the flex evident with just my hand, let alone my bodyweight and approximately a berrrjillion watts ;)

googling round, it seems the aeolus wheels are noted for being *difficult* in regards to spoke tension. Unless your LBS's wheelbuilder is particularly noted/experienced with low spoke counts etc (and most learned to bosh out 32 spoke open pros on 105 hubs) they may not find it particularly easy

it might be worth seeking out a local specialist wheelbuilder

Checked about 3 forecasts tonight before heading out for a ride.. Zero chance of rain from all of them.. Got soaked.
I use the underground weather app on my android and it is pretty accurate. Certainly better than the inbuilt & BBC/MET. Although it's occasionally 'too accurate' - check weather, clear, get changed, check weather 15 mins later, rain forecast.
Second one again on the approach to a bend a guy passes and again a car comes into view "**** me that is close"... then I spotted the trailer. Slammed the brakes on and the trailer cut across about 6 inches in front of my front wheel.
Video and report them. Might seem a little extreme but with enough evidence being thrown at Police (by the huge amount of cyclists who now record everything) they'll on eday do something with it. Hate to say it, I'm an optimist! ;)
Anyone know where you can buy High 5 Zero tablets in individual tablet sachets ?
Email Wiggle and ask, or look on ebay? Could even email High5 to ask!

Yeah I would say that's spokes (but I'm no way an experienced wheelbuilder). What does Saytan think?
Just order and returns tons of individual items to Wiggle with free postage. Winnar :p

This is actually how I stocked up recently. Not on purpose but due to being incredibly disorganised.
LOL! Amazingly one of the few things I've not done to Wiggle (but abused them in many other ways...!)

Have a good day FT & Von, ride safe and grab us some pictures! I can't head out to catch the ToB any longer, manager has a damn meeting on Thursday! (I work in an IT department of 2).

Not sure, it doesnt look right though, thats a lot of movement for a relatively small force

what kind of spokes are they?

What kind of tone comes out when they are plucked? spokes "ring" higher as they get higher tensions. if there are the same number on both sides, the drive side should ring substantially higher than the non drive side. Usually the drive side rings a bit higher than a similar front wheel, while the non drive side is a bit lower.

all the spokes on a side should ring close together too

Move out and take ownership of the lane before the bend so they cant overtake dangerously and then pull in afterwards

Wouldn't have made any difference on these two bends as they were relatively wide roads. The positioning of the overtakes was fine in terms of them getting over, they both simply did so with no idea what so ever of whether something would be coming round the bend. I'm sure the 10 seconds they saved was worth the fright they got though. On the narrower lanes I do exactly what you describe.

Roady, it is tempting but I can't really be bothered with more stuff to attach to the bike / charge for each ride. I guess the Fly cameras would work quite well for me but they are too expensive for the use I'd give them.

Talking of expense... I've pretty much decided on a Fenix 3 when I get back from my trip. That is of course unless anyone can give me any reason not to from a cycling perspective?

Thanks, I'll mention it to them when I drop it in. I do have a Trek store not too far away.

Presumably they'll be a higher tension than most other wheelsets and so whilst they seemed tight and true it's not sufficient to stop them flexing silly amounts currently.

I'm sure I came across a website/blog of a wheelbuilder who used a guitar tuner and/or a tuning fork to perfect wheel tension.

I tried it myself but not knowing what was 'right' (coupled with the fact I'm pretty tone deaf) meant I gave up trying to learn wheelbuilding that way. I also totally overtightened some spokes and ruined the nipples as I couldn't get the tones to match. Bought the park tool tension meter (and really need to build some wheelsets to justify the cost). ;)

There's just some idiots on the roads who'll overtake regardless of the road and if it's clear or not. Unfortunately you can't tell who they are until they're squeezing past you in semi-primary with oncoming traffic hurling abuse. I'm actually getting a little more cautious of taking primary now on some of the twisty A roads around here & taking a 'sub/semi-primary' position as some of the idiots drive too fast to stop. I'm actually looking forward to lower light conditions so my lights slow people down more.

My VIRB is pretty good for battery life, I get more than a weeks commutes out of a single charge (currently 5*(4*10min)=3.5 hours). I do have 2 batteries though, so usually with a couple of leisure rides thrown in both batteries get charged once a week (alternating them).

Fenix 3 loops superb, but if you're using it for 75% or more cycling it's an expensive compromise when a Forerunner & something cheaper like a 520 (i.e. one for each sport) could give you more features.

Best road bike for £1000?

Mate of mine is starting to road bike more after getting to many injuries whilst downhill riding.

Usual suspects - Cannondale/Rose/Canyon ?? anyone spotted any end of year deals around?? Probably large/58 frame etc.

The look of it is one of the key points for me as I'll be able to use it for work. I currently have a Fitbit Blaze that despite their marketing spin simply looks rubbish in a customer facing role. It has also caught me out a couple of times with the display not being always on, you can't just glance and see the time and instead have to do an almost exaggerated movement with your arm that has lead to a comment of "sorry, am I keeping you" :o

I'd like to get one with the wrist based heart rate but when I then factor in an additional £40 for a HR strap as well for when I want a more accurate reading and you are looking at £420, that's about what I paid for my bike :o

DT Swiss Aerolight, I think.

I'll give them a pluck this evening and see if I can pick them up on a recording.

That flex is with the brake adjustment lever wide open, I ride with it closed and the pads quite close but not unreasonably so and the rub isn't so significant I feel myself slowing but prominent enough to hear.
