Road Cycling

Von covered it better than I could :) Awesome day out. Good to run into Physichull and co too.

The NCC guy I lead with was pretty strong. Quite fun to stretch my legs yeah though I did feel a bit like I shouldn't given you don't know the roads around there.

Great to bump into you guys!

Ridiculous pace from the Wizard to Tatton. Managed to keep pace and do a bit of a turn on the front with FT but was hard going! Really enjoyed that little leg stretch!

Great day out thouvh and some great photos and videos. Legs knackered after that fast stretch and the half hour full on sprint to get to the Wizard and wheeze past a load of slowcoaches up Artists Lane to get to the race in time! All hail Ian Stannard! Saw him come over the line at the end and the presentations.

Hope it doesn't come down to tracking as i used the Rapha return postage which is not track-able. I will give it another week before tracking them down.

I wasn't sure if I could just stuff mine in a postbox or whether it needed to be passed over the counter. So I did the latter and was given a receipt for it at least which hopefully I still have somewhere...

I checked out the wheel I have, which is a horrible mess on its last legs that I bought second hand, spoke tensions allover the shop

120-130kg gives a noticeably high TIIIING

80 or so kg gives a Tuuuuuung

I cant imagine the driveside being any less than 100kg/f

Roger. Shovelling calories in currently but will report.

Sounds like FT & Von had a 'good' day out. Anything that goes badly Von is character building :)

Rode through town to get to this evenings climbs. Was a bit wary with it being rush-hour, normally I head off in to the sticks but I'd been the way I came back quite a bit for the local TT loop so fancied some different scenery. Shan't be doing it again :o

Had some 'funny guts' the last few days so the thought of anything steep wasn't sitting well so just decided to tank it up some steady grades and keep the avg power up overall.

DT Swiss Aerolight, I think.

I'll give them a pluck this evening and see if I can pick them up on a recording.

That flex is with the brake adjustment lever wide open, I ride with it closed and the pads quite close but not unreasonably so and the rub isn't so significant I feel myself slowing but prominent enough to hear.

As requested:

The front sounded even and midway between the RDS and RNDS.

The RNDS does sound quite slack by comparison but I've no benchmark really... Tried to pluck as evenly as I could :o

I can't tell a lot from it i'm afraid. The ones on the same sides seem to be fairly even though. Which is good. Maybe they could be a bit higher. I don't think they're massively low

Yeah, I wasn't expecting you to be able to tell a great deal :p

I think they just need to be a bit higher. Some flex is inevitable but perhaps with a low spoke count whoever was truing them knew that they were going to become a PITA to keep true once past a certain tightness.

Will have them back Thursday so will report once I've ridden them again :) Ta for your input.

low spoke count

the lower the spoke count, the bigger the gap between spokes, the more funky you have to get to keep it straight if it's starting to wander, but at the same time, the more tension is needed by each spoke (because there are less to handle the load). Basically, less spokes, harder to build, fewer people can do it well.

i know plenty of theory, but i'm well sketchy about actually building anything less spokey than a 24F/28R

Went out for a later than usual blast last night as needed to get some hard miles into my legs and some distance in this week (as may not get time on the weekend). I dug out my front light (Cateye Volt800) and gave it an hours charge. First time it's been used since probably March!

Wanted to do a loop as I've got my eye on a long/big segment but just didn't have enough time. Once it got to 8pm I was glad I did, things were pretty much pitch dark when I got back at 8.30.

On the run out I saw the local chaingang heading back towards town shelling riders out the back, around 20 of them with 3 groups of 2-4 trying to get back on. A minute later the 2nd chaingang appeared, several of them shouting greetings as they recognised my bike! Around 12-15 of them, so must've been a big turnout (25 on Strava, so probably 40+).

Heading back to town I increasingly attracted moths with my big front light, also hearing bats flying around me. Passing under some trees I got dive-bombed by a couple of owls catching moths attracted to my lights! Lovely evening but utterly beasted myself so needed a good cooldown afterwards. Happy with a 19mph average. 19.5 if I exclude 0.5 mile of the start/finish :D

I couldn't be arsed riding up it, so I dropped my chain, failed to unclip and fell into the verge.
:D:D:D

Glad you guys had a great day & enjoyed yourselves! Those NCC chaps sound like jolly a good bunch! ;)
Didn't know High5 did mojito gels too, the electrolyte tablets are my go to ones. I'll have to pick some up. The beer gel actually sounds pretty good...
Yeah I love the tabs too, although I am getting slightly swayed by the Tropical (Blue) ones recently as find them more refreshing in the hotter weather.

Beer gel. My life is now complete!

Goodluck! To be honest the RNDS 'sounding slack' can be a bit misleading, the RDS should obviously be much tighter with the RNDS only really providing tension to keep the wheel true. If it hasn't got much then it's not hard to imagine the power transfer from the tight RDS spokes causing the flex (dishing?) you're seeing.

This popped up on my news feed earlier and made me chuckle - Wiggo jumping off and running part of 'The Struggle' lol :D

And this is why I'm glad I didn't attack them with a spoke tool myself! It's someone elses problem for the time being :p

Some might be interested to see the cut on my front tyre (Vitorria Corsa G+ - Graphene y0!). Went right down to the sheath, which is tough as nails! Not a mark on the tube, no slow puncture or anything. Right in the centre of the tread.

Good grief, I'm sore. I'm not convinced that Cosine saddle is for me... It's got quite a wide nose so I've got some major chafage on the inside of my thighs, and it's not very forgiving going over any bumps, so my arse is well sore. Might have to go back to the Madison flux, or try one of the new fabric ones.

Tbh the nose on it did look a bit pointed down too.
