Road Cycling

Ooh, nice work! I want to try this at some point. Longest off roading was probably 50 miles (with a small amount of road) and the SDW looks like a nicely kept route!

Supreme ride, how was the route/cycle paths/trails?

If you have a MTB the SDW is a must do! It's so amazingly beautiful and peaceful up there, and considering its 100 miles is signposted absolutely perfectly. I've done it a number oftimes but still when you're 70 miles in you have a double think and the signs are there and sort you out whenever you need them, all in the right place. Great day for it yesterday, was wet air all morning so kept cool and when sun came out wasn't too hot unlike today.

Made a bit of a mistake, wore a white rapha jersey not thinking it would be too wet underfoot and it is a little stained. Gone through the washing machine 3 times so far :( Only got it 2 weeks ago.

Looks like real power data in Stannard's ride. He's impressively aero for a big guy if so, comparing some of the segments we have both ridden.

There's a big difference in slipstream effect between riding in a normal club-style with 2 lines of riders and riding in a full peloton. Also pro riders will ride much closer together than us mere mortals so an even bigger effect. That may account for some of the difference.

Yep - got a Scott Scale 29er that I use very occasionally, normally with a few MTBing friends. Got to try convince them for 100 miles! Would a cyclocross bike be appropriate too?

Rapha on an MTB? :p Reminds me of a guy I saw in Glentress on an S-Works MTB with SPD-SL pedals and shoes and Rapha. Obviously normally a road rider!

CX I tried last year but failed, too many punctures, if it's all they've got it'll survive, but your body will be in bits.

It's my most comfortable stuff! :D The gloves yesterday worked a treat, so much better than my cheapo aldi ones. My hands still work today. Although lool @ the SL pedals!

Brownie points if anyone can help me source a replacement M6 bolt for my seatpost. N00b at the Trek store managed to round it :o

Definitely M6 but struggling to find something with a narrow enough head to fit between the housing. 25mm, I think.

Get the noob at the trek store to source you one as it was their fault?

For the sake of a £1-2 replacement bolt and avoiding the 50 mile round trip I really cannot be bothered. If it proves more difficult to source (shouldn't think so) then I'll reconsider.

So..again, why do people run? It's so rubbish compared to cycling.

Legs are quite tired from a combination of two runs, two hilly rides and lots of commuting in four days. Looking forward to some active rest tomorrow.

Ahhh didn't realise it was so far away.

It's been a while since I've been as tired as I was today. My old man came round to have a look at some bits in my house and I could barely hold a conversation. Had a nap in the afternoon for the first time in a good 6 months! Just didn't sleep well last night with load of food still running through me. Going to attempt a metric tomorrow and Friday.

I meant to ask - what was it you did that required 6k kcal? Sounds fairly epic :)

Also, totally want to convert my old Cotic X to a CX bike and take it on some basic/easy MTB trails (to start with - I'm a total novice to such things). Any thoughts on using it in that way? I think it can fit 42c tyres.

If it fits tyres, should be fine. Most bikes are surprisingly hardy with the right tyres and wheels.

Cool stuff. I guess my concerns (badly expressed) were more along the lines of how I'll find riding that kind of bike on that kind of trail. Good to know it won't explode on me though :p

Cross bikes are fine until it comes to descending on anything but lovely smooth gravel I find. Once you hit that stuff then they lose out as you don't have the control and they're more suspectible to being knocked off line.

You'll be surprised by how much punishment the rest of your body will feel after the first few rides. Friends of mine who move from road to mtb always comment on how much it hurts at first.

My right knee is hurting... It often does after a long ride like mine and FT's ride on Tuesday. It's something like a tendon on the outer side of my knee. I'm not sure whether it's due to saddle height or cleat position. I'll have to have a play with it. It was this sort of pain that originally drive me to get a bike fit, though at that time I was getting this pain after just a few miles on the bike, rather than after 60 or 70. Maybe it's just delicate now and destined to always hurt... I hope I can figure a way to adjust my fit to stop it.

Sorry, I should have said! :)

My 2p: Sounds like it might be an issue to do with how your foot currently pronates on each pedal stoke. Do you have supportive insoles at all? Whilst I wasn't getting any pain I found these transformed how connected to the bike I felt.

Saddle height issues are more likely to cause problems at the back of the knee & hamstrings from over extending. You could check your fore/aft and that your KOPS (knee over pedal spindle), as a rough guideline, isn't way out. If you're shifting forwards/back on the bike while riding on the road then it'd make sense to adjust this accordingly.

Other things it's likely to be is either an overuse injury or residual tightness/mobility that needs working on.

If you have knee warmers I'd pop one on for a bit of compression and get some gentle full range of motion stretches done a few times a day until inflamation subsides.

One thing a lot of people are quite guilty of is trying to jab/roll/stretch already inflamed muscles or tendons which really just needs a bit of down time first :o
