Road Cycling

Evening all, I'm hoping someone can help with a front mech issue I'm having.

Running ultegra di2 on my Cervelo R2. Must be about the 5th time now I've reset the front mech position as per the Shimano instructions and I'm having the same recurring problem with the shifting.

From small to big ring it's often shifting too far pushing the chain off (limits have been set)

Sometimes it struggles to get from the big ring back into the small ring.

And lastly after sprinting in the big ring the chain will jump off - haven't noticed this since the last "reset" mainly due to lacking confidence to actually try sprinting.

My only idea is that I may need a spacer between the bottom bracket and the crank to move the crank arm outwards slightly on the drive side to give the mech a bit more room for adjustment - not actually sure if such spacers exist. It's the BBright bottom bracket with a FSA Gossamer crank.

Any help is much appreciated, really bugging me now!

You say the limits are set but what makes you think they are set correctly? Don't know about FSA but on SRAM chain sets you use plastic spacers/wave washer to take out any side to side movement in fit, dependant on the bottom bracket width, not to move it out board. You set the front mech for that.

You have to remember that Di2 over shifts on the front and trims it back for quicker engagement so you have to compensate for that.

The limits are set as per the instructions supplied by Shimano (http://si.shimano.com/php/download.php?file=pdf/dm/DM-UL0001-03-ENG.pdf). I had the same di2 on a Scott Foil before I sold it and never had any issues, the only difference is that it had ultegra cranks rather than the FSA one which is leading me to think that it's an issue with the distance between the rings and the derailleur, as when at the correct limit the bolt isn't screwed in much.

Edit: Just had a look at the FSA installation instructions and it says that "shims" may be used to stop "side play". I don't think there is any side play. Does anyone know of any adverse effects on the bike if I got one to put on the drive side to test my theory?

I'd really consider winding the limit screw in half a turn at a time to the point where it still shifts well but can't throw the chain off the top before sodding around with spacers.

shimano manuals are pretty broad brush in their approach

Been away for the weekend so this might have been posted already...

Aldi have the Edge 810 for £179 this Thursday but you can pre-order online:

https://www.aldi.co.uk/garmin-edge-810/p/073223081458200

Not a bad deal. I got mine for £180 - BC discount at Halfords last November. It's had it's ups but many downs too. I'd be tempted to stretch for the Wahoo Elemnt.

They also have some Moon Nebula fakes by the looks of it. I'll probably pick up one as a spare rear light.

It's set when in the big ring and the smallest cog at the back, the limit is as close to the chain without touching it, I'll double check tomorrow in case it's moved .

If that is the case I can't see its even possible to push the chain off. The inside of the out board edge of the front cage should be about 1mm from the chain when in its final position. That doesn't give enough room to push the chain off.

I need to get some bike insurance. Im looking for 8 days travel cover which would basically sort me out if my bike gets smashed or lost in transit flying to Mallorca and back. I was looking at Bikemo but they seem to only be for a years cover, im after 8 days max. Im not to concerned with UK coverage because over here if im not riding my bike, its hanging on the wall.

Unless the mech is positioned too high or - as per the OP's suspicion - there is some major side to side play in the bottom bracket, in which case the crankset could conceivably move too far over to the left side of the bike and with the chain already in the smallest ring at the back it could then pop off at the front. I think we need some pictures.

Nice one on the TT Benny! Saw that on Strava looks awesome.

Ta :)

Your home insurance provider might be able to offer some pro-rata cover for the week but it might be quite limited in regards to its scope. Ideally you're more concerned with in transit cover, most airlines don't accept responsibility IIRC and some home insurers may ask for a signed receipt to say they are in possession if it were to go missing.

You've 14 days to cancel an insurance policy (cooling off period) so you could always buy and cancel cover but it's not really a long term solution and a bit immoral :p

So just before I go being stupid and spending lots of money, a Shimano 11 cassette will definitely fit on a Campag 10/11 Speed freehub?
