Road Cycling

Replacement HR strap came today. Put it on dry and it picked it up straight away so the other one was obviously duff. Noticed the electrodes were a different design so maybe they revised it at some point? Went for a quick ride and it is clear that it is much quicker to respond than wrist HR measurements which basically just echoes every review I've read on the matter.

One of my bikes hit the deck last night  Screws pulled clean out of the, very crumbly, breeze block in the garage. I decided to drop all my hooks down so that they only support the front wheel with the rear wheel now on the floor.

Lastly while on a ride this evening I heard a clatter like I'd ridden over something. Got back to find one of my rear lights missing :o

I noticed I could reduce my HR by 5 by putting my right hand on the bars.
Just imagine the drop with BOTH hands on there! ;)

That's a bummer about the fracture clinic, got any healthcare/insurance which might cover a private consultation?

You win some, you lose some! Worth retracing steps to find your light?

Commuted the last couple of mornings with a front flasher so autumn is really here... :(

Stinky weather again here this morning, not actual rain but misty/damp/moisture in the air kinda start. Doesn't feel as cold as the last couple of days so quite tempted by a loop later... That or sort my turbo setup out (probably more important)...

Edit: One of the local riders I've ridden with a couple of times (Andy Turner) got his Elite licence after finishing 2nd at the West Midlands Regional Champs. He's been mixing it up with the semi-pro's for a while (lots of clashes with Wiggins riders) and holds most of the TT course records around here. Very much a breakaway/solo kinda rider who can TT immensely. Really hope he gets snapped up and gets a good chance as I'm pretty sure he can do well! His blog is a great read if you like racing blogs. Tom: There's a picture from the 'John Walker Memorial' and the rider behind him looks like he's wearing Paceline kit?

Edit: VeloBirmingham. Anyone interested? My riding buddy and his brother seem really interested for some reason... There's lots of hype around it which I fail to see the reasons for, it's a 'RideLondon' ripoff. Equally depending on pricing and availability I may end up doing it with them.

Phew... regreased bearings in Zonda rear wheel on the weekend with a friend... and as we tightened lockring onto cassette something threaded. Just tried with another lockring and fortunately it's just that and not the freehub body!

I pre-registered but judging by them making it best sportive ever, 'free' photography, domestiques handing out gels en route etc I'm not expecting it to be cheap so we'll see...

How's the Zonda sounding now & how did the bearings look?

Yeah I don't hold out much hope, still drawing a complete blank (as I often do) over these big & expensive sportives and the local guys who seem hooked on them. I know they're mostly along closed roads, but why pay good money & travel to an inner city 'Sportive' to only ride back out to roads near your home you can ride anytime... VeloBirmingham comes out to Bromyard... Only ~20 miles away from Hereford.

These are the same guys who don't ride local sportives, which are a fraction the price or local charity rides which are often free.

One side of bearings looked pretty rough. Lot of rust colour gunk over them. Surprising considering I've mostly done dry rides this year... very few wet rides on this wheelset really. Seems to sound better now though spinning it holding axle in fingers doesn't feel extremely smooth to be honest!

I wonder if my bottom bracket needs a service too... now reached 7000+ miles on this bike.

Yeah but with bearings all it takes is a tiny bit of moisture if there's no grease present and you'll get rust!

Drives me mad the couple of newish cup&cone's I've looked at and they all seem to be lacking grease. Grease is pretty cheap, certainly more than new bearings after a few months!

Nah, it was a £3 one from Planet-X! Was pretty bright though and made a good backup light. Lesson learned is not to put it on the saddle bag strap. I was always a bit dubious of doing it with this light as the clip didn't close around the strap like my old one so it was always going to have a chance of bouncing out.

Just had a look back at last nights ride, it is so nice to be able to see an elevation plot that bears a resemblance to the ride that I've done! Edge 200 was great for the money and never missed a beat in nearly 3 years but I'm already starting to see how limited it was.

Is there anywhere else to ride around Richmond park or is this just the best of a bad scenario?

The only other route I really do in close vicinity to escape the Richmond Park traffic is this... along to Chertsey on one side of the river and back the other way. I wouldn't say it's exactly magnificent but it has few traffic lights and generally traffic isn't horrific.

You could go a bit further along to Egham where there's a few mini hills. https://www.strava.com/activities/589182920

Can't really think of anywhere else to recommend but the park itself unless you go out to Surrey Hills or Windsor.

Because London? ;)

Guy on my friends list is occasionally stationed there and tends to ride Regents park rather than Richmond. He also does hill reps at Hampstead heath, if you were after some variation...

Ah that explains it, I used one of these: Cateye belt clip to attach to my previous. I drilled 2 holes in it - 1 through the 'arms' so once clipped to saddlebag, I could put a ziptie through it to secure it, the other by the opening to secure the light into it, again with a ziptie. Used lockable ones so could reuse them when removing light for charging purposes & refit. ;)

EDIT: Congrats on 100 pages guys! xD

That is.

I think it'd probably work out cheaper to hire locally than it would to take your own and arrange temporary insurance cover to be honest.

Already packed the box bro. My travel insurance has lost luggage up to £2000, i wonder if that covers bike boxes as luggage.

Been a bit quiet on the cycling front the past few weeks, have been awfully busy with gaming festivals and other work. :p Haven't really touched Strava properly in weeks either. :(

VeloBirmingham looks to be awesome, have rode many of the lanes so am looking forward to it a lot. However before that, Palace 2 Palace this weekend, 90 Miles of London to tackle!
