Road Cycling

I wasn't going up them full gas (though was still working) because I had a solo slog home and when it came down to it wanted to enjoy the slopes than focus on a segment time :) I'll give it some beans when I come back ;) If the weather permits tomorrow morning and my legs are still functioning I'll light a match up to the first view point on the lighthouse ride
Good luck for this morning mate & enjoy!
11 speed chain of any type (cheap as possible, for CX/turbo bike)
SRAM PC1130. Amazing chains for the money (usually £14ish but out of stock atm on Woggle).
Day off tomorrow which I predict will mainly be used for swearing at mudguards. If I get them on quick I'll do a 50 miler taking in a disused railway, if not I'll ride a quick(ish) 20 on it.
Thanks for Zwift clarification.

Good to hear the Mustang arrived and was quick to setup! What tyres has it come with? 25/28mm? I've found pressures make a HUGE difference to feeling on my 28mm, dropping from 90psi to 85psi on the front makes an incredible amount of difference. I even dropped down to 80psi on the front (as my commute road has lots of broken tarmac on it) and know I could go much lower. I think 85psi in the back is perfect and I usually keep my front only slightly lower.

As for fitting Chromoplastics, the back was a breeze on my Diverge! mount points were in a perfect place with the bridge and frame mounts only requiring a redrilling of the guards to widen the holes for the bolts I was using. The front was a pain (and still isn't perfect) but that was mostly due to my frame mount points and their location meaning I could only run 1 set of struts at the end and the supplied were not long enough.
Probably use the Vectors occasionally when I know I can do some cross routes without the need to walk!

23mm internal rim is nice and wide!

You need to walk even with those tyres?! :p
Anyway, I did the Cat D, which to be fair was fairly easy. I kept having to hold back up climbs to keep my average power to my category. I wasn't really too sure of what the rules were... either way, was decent and came in 3rd, which is nice.

Happy with that for a first go. Like their event format! :)
Great first result, well done! :D

Quite interesting looking at your power/speed/cadence on the climb, your power level (220W) looks quite low for you, were you holding back? How much of that is the trainer and how much of that is zwift's impact? Your HR isn't that high so some good pacing? Love the 58.8mph burst over the top! :D

Local guy I know came 43'd in the B.

You're right, I was really holding back. It was hard to keep my wattage that low, but I was in the D category so was keeping it steady at 2.4w/kg. I didn't know what happened if you didn't... which is just apparently you get pushed up to the category above, but then my time would have sucked as I didn't go out on a higher push.
I'm doing Cat C on Sunday. It's flat, so should be good for mid ranks on that one I hope. ~2.8w/kg average should be nice.

New tyres (Michelin Pro4 End V2 25mm) feel so plush I had to keep looking down to see if I had a puncture! Not sure how much grip there is from these on damp roads when cornering but certainly there's going to be more than my previous (factory fit) efforts. Suppose in an ideal world we'll have tyres that wriggle/twitch a little before they actually full on let go - so you get a bit of a warning. I know I ask too much.

Anyway, if I don't get a ruck of PB's on the way home they're going in the bin. :p

I've got the same tyres in 28mm and I've never had them let go on me but I have come out of a corner thinking 'yeah, I was pushing my luck a bit there' so they do communicate with you. I could probably push them much harder but I'd take losing a couple of mph in a corner to face planting the road any day of the week!

Thanks for Zwift clarification.

It is currently running Schwalbe CX something or others in 35mm. Using my usual source for these thing I think I'll run just over 45 PSI in the front and a smidge under 60 in the rear, if the tyres are rated to go that low that is.

My road bike is on 28's and I run that at 70 front, 85 rear.

Does anyone have any idea where the cheapest place to get 11 speed chains/cassettes are?
Code:
Part | Wheelies | Tredz | Rose | Wigg | PX | CRC |
105 5800 12-25 cassette | £40 | £40 | £31 | £32 | £34 | £32 |
Ultegra 6800 11-28 cassette | £50 | £50 | £44 | £47 | £40 | £47 |
Ultegra/DA 11 speed chain | £25 | £25 | £23 | £25 | £34 | £28 |
SRAM 1130 11 speed chain | £14 | £14 | £ | £14 | £13 | £20 |

Only thing to note would be bundles & delivery costs & time. CRC have some pretty attractive cassette and chain bundles. The delivery time & cost from Rose don't make much sense (not saving enough).

2 orders - Wiggle (105 cassette & 5800 chain, if the 1130 was in stock) and Ultegra cassette & 1130 from PX. If you needed other kit you could get the 105 cassette/bundle from CRC, nothing else from there makes sense from that list unless bumping an order up for a bigger total for the 10% off...

I watched the GCN video on pressures and they said it was quicker on 28s running lower pressures. Really dropped them right now. I might try it on mine, as I'm on standard fat boy 90/95

They're better for wet road grip than many others! Very supple tyres (high TPI) so give you lots of feedback without wearing too much. I did switch my 25mm out last time for Conti 4Seasons after a couple of wiggles over wet drain covers and getting a slice in one. I'm back on them now in 28mm and probably won't switch them out unless the weather really deteriorates (wet/snow/etc). I have the Roubaix Pro my Diverge came with I'll switch back to and will probably use them instead of Conti 4Seasons as they're 1/3 cheaper with loads of tread. No idea how much they wear though...!

Faceplant crew signing in. :D

Quite a bit lower than me, I tend to run slightly high as all of my riding is on roads and quite fast (not saying you're slow!) so don't want to sacrifice too much speed.

'Quicker' isn't much use if you're puncturing every other week... I've found much lower than 80 on my 25mm's really felt like any pothole could end in tears. 28mm are going to feel like it even more so...

EDIT: Merino base layer suggestions guys, long/short sleeve doesn't matter, ideally don't want to spend over £20 so I can buy ~5. I'm feeling the cold loads recently and temperatures have not even been below 5 degrees this week. Will be wearing them under work clothes with possible cycling commuting use during sub zero winter weather.

I put 100psi in my new tyres (25mm) for general road riding - is that a bit much, or about right? You 28mm guys run lower pressures than 25mm then?

anyone tried the crud roadracers k3?

getting a pair today, will see! my bike has no mounts, no holes nothing in the forks :o

I'm using these:

Highly recommended, super quality, wash really well.

Prices are all over the place though - have a poke around - aim for around £24 ish (what I paid). CRC sold them - great reviews, sold out now though.

100psi for 25mm is generally what vast majority of people will run. It's too high for me and very harsh as I am bit of a twig so I run 90 front and 95 rear.

I have a set of the MK3's in the post and they should get here today I think. Will let you know how I get on but will be a while as the winter bike aint even been out yet :)

Bike discount now competitive for you guys? I find it's impossible to touch their prices anywhere else most the time.

Had my race tonight. Mate of mine did Cat A, which makes me cry thinking about 4-5w/kg.

Looks pretty fun. I need to get in on the Zwift action at some point :)

I've ordered a fair bit of stuff from Bike-Discount. I find Bike24 cheaper for a fair bit of stuff though.

Code:
Part | Wheelies | Tredz | Rose | Wigg | PX | CRC |

SRAM 1130 11 speed chain | £14 | £14 | £ | £14 | £13 | £20 |

That's quite useful, thanks. Certainly cheaper than I'd found, even with CRC BC discount :)

I don't order from Tredz though. They have cack service.

28s on my work bike get down to 60 before i start noticing anything. wider tyres = lower pressures safely

the fat bike boys are running 8 or 9 psi....

I've got a set waiting at home haha :) just got delivered, will install this evening!

to be very honest with you they do look pretty good, very clever design!

we'll see how they last, I had 2 sets of mk2's.. both exploded

Thinking my problems is looking on cycling websites lol :D

Think I need to go more old school and look in some of the hiking stores, most of the ones I'm looking at the wicking seems to be higher priority than actual heat retention...
I put 100psi in my new tyres (25mm) for general road riding - is that a bit much, or about right? You 28mm guys run lower pressures than 25mm then?
Bigger tyre = more air volume = lower pressure required for tyres for the same feel as higher pressure smaller volume tyres.

100psi I always found too harsh on my 25mm but that is what I ran on 23mm.
100psi for 25mm is generally what vast majority of people will run. It's too high for me and very harsh as I am bit of a twig so I run 90 front and 95 rear.
Much of it depends on road conditions, if I was only fast A/B road riding with good surfaces I'd be running higher... But 50% of my riding is commuting where speed isn't too much of an issue, but comfort is. The remainder 50% leisure riding probably 20% is along back roads with bad conditions/surfaces/crap on roads so I again need the comfort and grip of lower pressure.

Hahahahaha, good luck! :p

I've got arms & parts left from my mk2's if anyone needs them (I'll never use them again).

Ok temporary guards when you have no other option. I'd rather spend the money on an ass-saver and overshoes before fitting a better guard...
That's quite useful, thanks. Certainly cheaper than I'd found, even with CRC BC discount :)

Shouldn't need to return a cassette/chain! ;)

Yeah BC discount is great... But when CRC inflate their prices to over 5% higher than other sites then there's not much point unless spending a large amount to offset.
