Road Cycling

I've just picked up a new model Garmin Vivoactive (lastest model - a no-strap HRM + GPS) for £159.

Probably be selling them for less than this come Black Friday but nuts to it - I need to start doing some proper HR zone training, just want to make sure the miles I've got time to do each week actually count for something. Junk miles is the enemy.

Forecast said like 6C... was actually closer to 9C. Overdressed yet again...
Yup melted here at lunch! was ice on the ground this morning so didn't expect 8-9 degrees at lunch! I think the wind is warmer too (but just as strong) as that's made it feel colder than 5-6 degrees other days so my softshell & roubaix tights combo was perfect... Just not today! Headwind back to work too, normally it's headwind home... Toasty!:eek:
@Roady, he's actually lent me his Tacx "Flow"... <snip>

I've sorted my Endura order too. Should be here in the week ready for the ride.
Ahhh the Flow, was on my shortlist as they're the ones around £200 in Decathlon/Halfrauds and my Vortex was £350, deal on the Vortex to £315 combined with old bike sale (£120) and old trainer sale (£140) allowed me to justify it to the boss! ;)

Just a heads up - be cautious wearing new kit for your long ride, especially at the start! You don't want to introduce early sores/irritations when you've got 20 hours of riding left to do... :p

Providing you're pushing some and maximising some other sessions on the bike then 'junk' miles are impossible. Much of the 'base' mileage over winter could be considered 'junk' but with some other interval sessions, with some climbing/power work they add to the structure you're building. Consider them 'endurance' training!

Indeed I came in with 3 layers and right now I'm not sure if I'll be going home with 3, 2 or even 1 layer on. Utterly bonkers.

Grudas more proud of wearing skimpy outfits when it's cold than being able to post fast times, big rides, hard climbs or big watts.:p

lol, depends what floats your boat, I'm simply happy to commute on my bike and that's that :D

I'd love to have more time to go on club rides etc but I just don't, hopefully that'll change sooner or later :o last proper ride I did was the ocuk ride believe it or not

Well, if it makes you feel any better, I went to one of those neanderthal gathering centres (gym I think it's called) the other night and put my back out deadlifting.:D

well done! you're on your way to becoming a man ;) :D I do enjoy lifting, more than I do cycling lately but that might be because I have so little time and gym takes less time than a good bike ride.. I am half tempted to pop out with my brother on sunday for the BBC ride. :o

Don't see the point of lifting. There's only three types of exercise I'm interested in: walking, cycling and shagging. Swimming at a push.

Pffft! Although have to admit recently I've been going for thicker 'combo' jerseys - warmth, windproof and showerproof in the same garment. Previously I had a warmth layer and then tailored the outside layers for the wind/rain (gilets/jackets).

Do it! You seem to be riding less recently & posting less in here, don't lose the passion! :(

Group rides are fun! Excuses for conversation, coffee & cake! :D
put my back out deadlifting.:D
Hope you're happy with yourself! :p

Using it as base work to do more climbing in 2017? Enjoyed reading your blog and your Colorado adventures! Are body weight exercises best for that kinda core work, or are weights just an easy shortcut to the strength needed? Not looking, my body is too bean shaped (with short limbs!) just interested. Have a friend who's got into her climbing recently and she's loving it!

Have a good weekend all. Weekend plans for me are a factory reset & complete wipe of my 810 and probably a long turbo session tomorrow morning rather than a rainy & cold group ride. Unsure of sunday plans so may do 2 turbo sessions.

Anything near 1-2 degrees = frost = dangerous.

Its just not worth the risk for the sake of a hobby. Two people on my Strava feed today have fallen off their bikes on ice today on their way to work. I never chance it when there's frost about.

No, you just rode up Rivi instead :p

Monster trucker! I got to my bike to ride home to find I had a puncture! Hawthorn right through the rear tyre. No mercy. Finally heading off now.

Wasn't it literally yesterday I posted saying I'd not had one all year? I knew I was tempting fate!

Wind and sunshine are the next biggest factors to consider when dressing for a ride I find. And also to some extent the profile & speed.

Last weekend was very windy and not sunny at all where as this Sunday will be stiller with sunshine. Decisions.

As in most scenarios better to be able to take it off than not have it to put on in the first place :)

Assuming it's anything like today I'd suggest something warm up top but no need for leg coverings :)

/still overwhelmed with the novelty of having ridden outside again...
