Road Cycling

Some combination of nuclear winter and global warming scepticism amirite?

Blasted in this morning at 19.4mph... Only my regular commute but it felt good to actually put some speed down outside. Shame I didn't replace my PM battery as it would be nice to look at the power stats.

Let's assume it was about 5w/kg the whole way.

I'm WFH so going to jump on the trainer in a mo. Assuming my wife stops telling me to do stuff... Just because I'm at home, doesn't mean you can make me do stuff. Assume I'm not here.

Popped out for a gentle ride with a friend from work. Felt good to do a "real" ride again even if it was pretty low intensity. Rode past the spot where I broke my collarbone too...quite funny just how slow and careful I was around that area :p

I was cautious enough this morning going past the bend where I fell off on Friday and that didn't even involve any broken bones! Although saying that I was doing the thick end of 20mph at that point and looking back at Strava from Friday I was doing 19mph when I wiped out. 19mph on an icy bend was never going to end well!

It seems that replacing the chain and freewheel on my single speed has got rid of the awful clonking I was getting on that bike. I think it was the freewheel as that felt horribly gritty when I took it off the bike. I might take it to bits to see how it works and see if I can revitalise it and keep it on hand as a spare.

Ouch, yeah. Today was a bit wet but not icy otherwise I'd have been going much slower. I did slow down a lot for any corners as well - I have zero cornering confidence atm :s

Waiting for my tacx parts be like... :/

Wasn't it literally yesterday I posted saying I'd not had one all year? I knew I was tempting fate!
Hahaha, ain't that always the way! I'm sure last time we talked about them in here I had one within days. Hush now!
Heh thanks. Didn't think anyone would actually read it!
I do enjoy a good read of a blog, even better with PICTURES! :D
Urgh, I'd forgotten just how knackering Sufferfest videos are :p
Did you try their app?
offttt - that's a tough 1 hour session - 3mins at FTP, 3 mins at ftp +30W and 3 mins at ftp + 60W - rinse and repeat 3 times!!! (9 mins rest in between)
Ouch! I did kinda the opposite, a lazy/easy one on saturday with all intentions of doing a harder session on sunday which didn't happen... Hit my weekly mileage but only 1 high intensity session for the week means it probably wasn't what I needed. But good to keep the mileage up! Can't ride next weekend so going to try and get a couple of real turbo sessions in this week. Half considering looking at the Zwift FTP builder options for some easy structure as I think that's all I need (now 99% of the house DIY/decorating is done!)

Now I need to get a turbo trainer but I'm not sure what I'm looking for to be honest. so, I'm turning again to the knowledge of OCUk :P I don't want to spend a huge amount, and from what I've seen so far it looks unlikely, I'd like to somehow record distance i've covered while turbo training.

If that functionality takes the price sky high, then a bog standard cheap and cheerful turbo-trainer will suffice :)

Advice please :p
Depends on your definition of 'huge amount' really!

A Tacx Flow Smart @~£200 from Halfords/Decathlon is a superb deal. For the money even if it's ~£50 over your budget it would be worth stretching for. It might seem totally over spec for what you want now (your requirements are only for distance), but if you continue the turbo work you're likely to want a smart trainer for use on Zwift/TrainerRoad/Sufferfest.

A basic 'dumb' magnetic trainer can be had for less than £100. A fluid/liquid trainer to reduce noise will usually be over £100.

As mentioned Speed & Cadence sensors are £20-30 (Recommend the Wahoo ones if the Garmins are out of your budget) and are the easiest way to add your distance measurement/requirement.

If you're buying a cycling computer/head unit then see if you can get a bargain buying one with the sensors. If you're looking to use a mobile instead then check which will work with your iphone/android (basically a BT/ANT+ choice). If you're looking to use with an android phone/tablet (or laptop in future) then ANT+. If you're using with iPhone and/or iPad then BT (and I think Strava? Unsure if it supports ANT+ S&C sensors yet?).

It's basically a minefield as soon as you go beyond your basic requirement for 'distance'. Unless you're tied into Apple already (ie already using iphone & ipad and won't be buying a head unit & are happy to wait for those features/apps when eventually released on iOS), you will save lots of headaches by going ANT+. Of course you can save a lot of headaches by getting dual broadcast adaptors too...
Good heavens, my body is sore today. The bruise on my hip is huge, but my right shoulder and back are sore as well.
Hope the swelling has gone down & the aches subsided some today mate!?
I've seen a few about... pretty good at night. The first one I saw was in the daylight but fairly overcast and low visibility to be honest... A road coloured jacket isn't best in those conditions.
This. I found it strange the 'standard' colours of the jacket were quite dark ones (disclaimer: I've only seen pictures online).

Basically you're wearing something predominantly dark colours and reliant on car lights hitting it before they 'see you' and light you up. You're buying into a garment made for visibility where the technology only works in car lights. It might be great when out on the roads in the dark when headlights hit you, but inner city under street lights the effect is not the same. Approaching a roundabout/junction (away from a cars lights) it won't make a bit of difference to them 'not seeing you'. A high viz jacket with reflective panels is going to be at least as visible (if not more) in every circumstance, if that is your requirement...
Tbh any kind of high-viz is worse than simply having lights. Obviously both is better but lights are the most important thing.
Totally agree.

As I mentioned above, it's very situational. If your riding is always in that situation, then it suits very well. But most of us will be riding on open roads away from car lights and being at junctions/roundabouts unlit by car lights.

What I'm trying to say is - when the jacket is 'working' (in car lights being lit from the direction that you need visibility from) although important, it's probably very 'low' on our requirements for visibility. Why be more visible when there is a high chance of a driver seeing you, if it compromises your visibility (even slightly) when a driver has a lower chance of seeing you.

Scots, anywhere worth riding from Glasgow city centre?

Up there soon and might consider renting a bike if there are any good shops for that.
You'd be better hiring an armoured car... ;)

Look into jumping on a train and getting out of the city! It's been 15+ years since I was last there but I doubt much will have changed :p

This is why I have exercised my right to work from home a grand total of x times this year.

"oh, if the home phone rings and I'm not nearby can you grab it"?
"could you take the dog for a walk lunchtime"?
"could you just quickly help me with x/y/z"?
"could you just take the washing basket up the garden as it's heavy"?
"could you nip out to collect kids from school"?

F. O. !!!

I think those Pro-Viz jackets work really well. I see them quite often and they light up very nicely when my cycle lights hit them.

I'd never buy one though as they are as aero as a parachute and as breathable as a bin bag.:D

I wear very little in terms of reflective clothing but I do always have two front lights and two rear on (even in daylight) and I've used a pack of those stealthy (black, stuck to a black frame) reflective stickers on my bike & helmet.

Garmin Vivoactive HR watch has turned up - I like it!

Anyone with the Rivelo Winnats winter tights used them in the rain? What's the DWR fabric like on the legs?

Quite tempted by a pair at £60...

"could you just quickly help me with x/y/z"?
Tell me about it! Sit down for a good couple of hours to catch up with some gaming while she's watching TV (after a busy morning of DIY & dog walking). 10 minutes later she's building the last bit of Ikea furniture as 'can't find anything to watch' now The Walking Dead is off Now.tv. Cue me getting less than 15 minutes of uninterrupted gaming done before I'm roped in to helping screw things in that are slightly tight ("they've sent the wrong size bits"), the wrong shape ("the instructions are wrong") and supplying any tool she can't find out of my nicely organised tool case (which now needs reordering & all screw drivers returning). My suggestion she did it in her underwear to keep me interested didn't seem to work, she'd just prefer to keep interrupting me...;)
Aha. I am wondering if I should even go!
Haha, it's a nice city but once you're out of the centre it's like any other sprawling metropolitan - huge amounts of cars, dirty overcrowded housing estates and empty old industrial parks (with scallys everywhere).

Crow Road towards Fintry is one of the top uk climbs (in the book) loads of good cycling over that way.
