Road Cycling

Has anyone here had laser eye surgery?

I keep thinking it'd be nice to cycle without prescription inserts.

Friend of mine recently had the surgery.
24, couldn't read a license plate in front of him.
Now has better than 20/20 vision. Or so he said the laser people said.

I passed 5000km this morning. So beat my target for the year. Considering my traveling with work and the fact that last year I only really started more riding, I'm pleased to get that in. Mini win.
Legs are a bit tight this morning and my ass is delicate.

Seen they got the 600xl on Evans for £48 with rear. Would this be enough for riding at night on dark roads?

No idea, check what lumen output most people recommend and base your decision on that?

Must be a review showing the illumination somewhere. I only use mine in the day/dawn/dusk during winter to be seen rather than see :)

I've never actually tried contacts.:o

I don't like the idea of poking myself in the eye to put them in and remove them. Also, I've heard horror stories of them going round the side.

They are also an ongoing cost.

I was in a similar position to you. I only use them for riding. Daily disposables. Ok, yes, I haven't been out for a while, but given that I only tend to get time to ride at the weekend really, and buying them online is fairly cheap (http://www.lenstore.co.uk/ is where I buy mine) they aren't too expensive. Once they are in, you don't notice them at all (or shouldn't).

Once you get used to putting them in, it's easy. You literally just place them on your eye. I don't understand how people lose them around the side. It's very hard for them to go there.

Maybe an option worth looking at. Or some prescription lenses for riding, I know some options exist (talking proper lenses, not the inserts in sunglasses).

I use Rx inserts currently and they are fine. I'd just prefer not to need them.

Direct glaze prescription lenses are mega expensive I think. Looking at nearly £500 for some direct-glazed Oakleys which would inevitably hit the tarmac.

My prescription is so bad that I cannot get prescription Oakley's and I was only able to get soft contact lenses as of a few years ago.... Prior to that only the gas permeable solid ones which are horrific.

I tried the soft contacts twice now and they are lethal. They are worse than going about everywhere blind because they get all misty and water filled whenever I blink. The optician said it's because my prescription is so sketchy the lenses I can get are not up there yet with the typical soft lenses everyone else can get? No idea. Apparently I will never be able to get laser eye surgery either?

I just ride around half blind with no glasses/contacts. Not died yet. That's what Sean Kelly or Boonen would do. They wouldn't rely on Specsavers.

Your soft scottish eyes are the problem, not the lenses. Sooner than lorry runs you down the better to put you out of your misery :P

Absolutely. We all have soft eyes and poor eye health up here. It is because of all the sunshine we get. It is not good for the eyes, you see.

Unless conditions are great, I'd much prefer being able to see properly over being macho.:p

Even on a clear sunny day, going through a shady, wooded area without my prescription inserts can make spotting potholes and road debris trickier.

How bad is your prescription that the contacts are that terrible?!

No idea what my actual prescription is number wise but I have massively thick lenses that I need to pay mega amounts to have slimmed down. All I can do is trust in the opticians but I have had 3 or 4 over the years now tell me my eyes are bad.

I went into a new one a few years back and she looked at my info. I didn't have glasses on and she said, "oh, so you have contacts in do you" and I said I didn't. She was properly over the top shocked and said "how on earth have you made it into here without walking into everything?!?".... She wasn't even joking, she was serious :(
