Road Cycling

Hey guys. May I get your opinion on a close call with a bus the other day?
Wasn't that close in my opinion mate, he had given you enough room, with just enough distance between him and the kerb. He could've braked earlier but as you mentioned your stop was unexpected, he was expecting you to continue while he turned left so he wasn't killing any speed. Air brakes on buses are the same as lorries - they take longer to engage than a car but when they do they're more powerful. That's part of the problem with buses/HGV's, they can't really easily 'scrub' speed like a car due to weight and their brakes.

You could send them the video and just express how unhappy you are with how close the bus driver stopped, but I think without any front footage (to show the reason for stopping) they'll just laugh at you and claim you brake checked the bus!:rolleyes:
Good police safety video.
Great video but very biased, the second cyclist in both instances has little/no lights on. The first one has good lights, and good reflectives!
Good find & amazing price, gonna grab my girly one of them (perfect stocking filler!) :D

EDIT: WTF @ sizing. I'd only just learnt she's a size 10 for tops! Google, help!

Rode in this morning and probably shouldn't have, picked up a big saddle sore yesterday commuting but don't quite understand how. After 10 & 8 minutes in the saddle?! I think there must've been some grit or something in my shorts, it's the only explanation as my riding volume has been low (only commuting) for a short week after taking an extra rest day Monday. Typical as the weather is dry (but cold) this weekend and there's a couple of club rides on!:mad:

^^ I hate that. One of my biggest worries when riding for so long, as I'm prone to picking up sores. I have a small one, but luckily not too bad on pad placement etc.

I thought it was the perfect filler too. She has a few bike things this year that she'll no doubt be like... you just bought these because you like them, didn't you? ha

WFH today, so no commute, but think I'm going to get a ride in when my 2yr old is napping at lunch. Been up since 5:30 so could do with one myself.

The above stages XTR is tempting for the MTB I have to say though...

My other half always needs riding kit but she's not interested in riding enough to buy decent cycling kit herself. She did have a result with some Sports Direct Karrimor jogging legging things though, £18 and they've got wind protection on the thighs which is actually pretty rainproof too! Shame Karrimor don't do cycling gear...

Yeah I don't tend to normally suffer sores like this, I've had them before after some big volume rides but they usually don't get this big and calm down overnight.

I'll quite happily ride through it today/tomorrow (Rule 5) providing I'll not make it loads worse for next weeks commuting, anyone suffer them more regularly and can advise? Extra chamois cream and continue? Cover/pasters/dress it up and continue? Or is time off the bike the only real solution? It's not in a 'high-friction' area, which makes me think its come from some outside source.

Next Tuesday/Weds is meant to be pretty dire here, -2/-3 in the mornings. Tuesday 'warms' up to 2/3 degrees for a couple of hours in the daytime but back to freezing for the commute home. Wednesday -3/-4 in the morning but stays above freezing into Thursday. If this sores not shifted think I'm going to drive both days and just have a rest week, but will feel pretty silly if I have an easy weekend before then!

Glad the wife went away this morning... haha

Since the chat above already mention power meters - what's the best bang for buck??

I'm tempted to get one for next year OR a set of carbon wheels.

I think for training and riding I like the idea of a power meter but they seem to be from £300 to £2000 and all have upsides/downsides etc.

Any thoughts?

a lot of Fizik saddles on Wiggle are 50% off.
Arione K5 for £52, nearly lots the plot. Then realised it was out of stock as I mashed the buy button 27 times. I hate the world.

If you consistently get saddle sores in the same place it's worth having a careful think about your riding position and stability on the bike, since sores are largely a product of too much movement on the saddle. I used to always get a sore in the same spot near my left sit bone. My OH mentioned in passing one day that I sat lopsided on the bike (dropping my right hip). Stuck a 2mm shim under my right cleat (took a bit of trial and error on the size) and haven't had a sore since. They'd affected me before for literally years.

Quick question, out of the two following lights which would you go for.

Volt 800
Volt 1200

It will be for 100% road use, & I do use a lot of unlit country lanes of an evening.
I currently use a Volt 300 which has been a good light for the past 2 years but fancy an upgrade :D

Doesn't look super close but can never really tell with camera angles. He is pulling up incredibly close to you though and I wouldn't be happy with that.

Reporting it to coach company would only get "We'll take this up with the driver" and you won't hear what they actually do if anything though might be worth it purely for getting the incident on his record in case similar happens in the future or he does actually knock someone off.

Had a coach driver this morning tailgating me 5ft behind my rear wheel at 30mph...

Karrimor are literally one of the key examples of Sports Direct ruining a brand. I used to find the brand great for hiking stuff until Sports Direct got hold of them and incredibly reduced the quality of everything.

Got a SportPursuit order myself yesterday. Rivelo Winnats Bib Tights... they seem great but they don't fit my short legs! Material just bunches up at knee pit or bottom of leg :(

Yeah they do tend to do that to any decent brand. Their is an initial "ooh, good quality stuff for a cheap price" then the quality goes south.

I really like my Rivelo bibs but longer rides have shown me that they don't fit my body quite as well as Pearl Izumi which tend to be a bit less wedgy-tastic in the pad department :p

So it turns out that simply buying a bike to use over winter doesn't magically make your mileage go up, who'd have thought it?! :p Currently on a pathetic 75 for the month but I have been working away a fair bit and some home improvements trashed what should have been a week of riding early in the month. Mon, Tues and Weds off next week to get that figure looking more respectable though!

It's not really the same place. Family has a thing where you're basically genetically sweaty but also makes you prone to {insert long medical name I can never remember} in those sweaty areas, which is nice. Luckily I don't get them often, but when you do it's fricking awful. Basically like a huge boil *vom*

RE. the Volt, I can't talk for the 1200 but I have the 800 and think it's great.

I have the Volt 800, I don't think I'll ever need a brighter light, I do country lanes as well as lit roads - it's spot on, mine's a year old now and flawless.

Get what you pay for.

Stages or Vectors on a deal. If value is your only requirement, then a S/H hub PWM can be loads cheaper, Powertap, but once you factor in the cost of a new wheel/rebuild (unless able to do yourself) and only ride one bike/wheelset then not overly 'bang for buck'.

Too many variables! ;)

DCR great writeup.

I want pedals due to ease of swapping/travel and dual sided. Powertap P1's to avoid Garmin pods, problems and any torque requirements, but they're never in deals and have their own 'quirks'. For 'cost saving' and still getting dual sided (plus I mostly used 1 bike) my next choice would be crank based power and probably Power2Max, great support, features and compatibility, but obviously harder to swap and any travelling/hire requirements become more tricky. Wheel based wouldn't be an option for me, as I would want the option of swapping between rim/disc bikes.

http://www.wiggle.co.uk/fizik-arione-r5-saddle-with-kium-rails/ - R5, has stock, £57.50.

Good shout, when I infrequently have them they're generally in the same spot... I know I'm bad for rocking on the saddle which originally came from arches collapsing...

Volt 800
Volt 1200
Volt800 owner here and it's a great light, but if money was no object I'd have a 1200 (thinking longer battery life for same/similar output by not running max).

I couldn't easily justify over £100 on a light and was only able to justify the £80 on the 800 as I got credit for a Volt400 I'd bought 6 months earlier and returned for a fault...!
I have been working away a fair bit and some home improvements trashed what should have been a week of riding early in the month.
#excuses! ;)

EDIT: Balck Friday deal from Ribble - R872 for £1150. Carbon, Ultegra with new style FSA crankset, noname wheels though. Anyone spotted anything? Wiggle mostly poor... Gabba 2's still half price certain colours/sizes.

Lots of links here I've not fully explored yet.
