Road Cycling

Sooooo, someone is selling a Giant Defy 2 (2015) on Gumtree locally for £140 with a 20 speed Tiagra Groupset. Too good to be true? It's in a bit of a dodgy area of Manchester (Salford Precinct). Collecting tomorrow in person, cash on collection. In two minds about leaving it though.

Yesterday I rode for the first time since I got ran over. Was a bit scared but started to enjoy it again and did miss riding.

I exchanged my mtb tyres for some road slick tyres Panaracer RibMo and felt a bit quicker on them.

I'll purchase a new road bike soon

Welcome back! Take it easy, confidence is best built slowly! Some easy/quiet loops and you'll be away! :D

Could be suspicious but don't let that put you off too much, as it could be a great deal on it. It was £750 RRP (so probably sold around £600-650 in usual LBS sales). Take a look and ask some questions face to face which the owner should know - where was it bought, how old is it, how many miles has it done, what kind of riding etc etc. If the seller doen't have a receipt but seems genuine might be able to snag it for £100 or something. If you don't get reliable answers I'd avoid it, much of buying second hand is the 'trust' you have in the seller. If they've put 10,000 miles on it & never serviced/maintained it, even if genuine, then it could cost you much more to change BB/bearings/etc.

I've got a Defy 1 2015 and it's a good alu frame, quite light & stiff. Once I changed wheels it served me very well and got me hooked on road riding after mostly being a commuter. Mine has done 5700 miles (now mostly only used on turbo, less than 1000 miles). So consider that in around ~5000 miles since December 2014, it's had a new BB, rear wheel bearing, new wheelset, new cassette & 3-4 sets of cables in that time as I rode it all weathers. Chainset is quite worn too & I changed the brakes after a caliper developed a fault. Not really *that* high mileage for a 2 year old bike, but to give you an idea of what that mileage 'costs' in maintenance/parts (mine was probably 'slightly' over maintained! Don't ask how many chains! ;)).
Veloviewer uses miles in a day for Eddington so I have lots of 31.x days commuting
Ah! That explains it! I removed my link to swinny.net after I went there and was showing someone elses data!? Anyone else noticed/confirm working/broken?
I don't think this is supposed to be like this....

Haha, you're meant to be burying yourself, not your rear derailleur!

Just hanger failure or RD arm?

clogged plus gravel everyone on site reckons, were 8 or 9 failures over the course of the day. Gonna chuck 105 on for now, and then when I update my Di2 one to larger bearing wheels will move the cage over. as I presume they'd be the same.

Probably dodgy but don't let that put you off, if it's hot then you can probably get a better deal on it. It was £750 RRP (so probably sold around £600-650 in usual LBS sales) which if taken recently was probably not worth claiming against insurance (thinking 50% depreciation and £150-200 excess?). Take a look and ask some questions face to face which the owner should know - where was it bought, how old is it, how many miles has it done, what kind of riding etc etc. If the seller starts to look uncomfortable you might be able to snag it for £100 or something.

 Pretty disappointed in this from you Roady. If it looks nicked then don't put a penny into the scummers hand. Yes someone else probably will but do you personally want to be the one rewarding someone who suplements their dole money by stealing off of people like us who spend our hard earned on something we want?

In fact, sure put the pressure on and if they become uncomfortable make it quite clear you think it is nicked then walk away. Hopefully that will get their bum twitching enough that they scrap it.

Easiest way to get to the bottom of it is to point out that the frame is still under warranty (I assume Giant give at least a couple of years on frames, right?) so can you see / have the receipt. At the end of the day it could well be genuine and someone needs a quick sale. Whenever I sell anything second hand I always undervalue it as I convince myself that it isn't worth much due to stupid reasons like the odd scratch here or there.

Snaffled a pair of Sportful Sotto Zero gloves on the bay, will report back once they arrive and the temperatures drop back below zero. They'll be to replace my Galibier Barrier II's which although good in very low temperatures, I've struggled with frozen thumbs a couple of times in below zero windchill.

Also grabbed a Sportful Gruppetto Thermal jersey for £26 from the Wiggle 'bay page (returns). Bargain! :D

Wait, all that rammed in the RD is from actual riding and not from it being rammed into the ground at speed?! :o

Oh I'm certainly not condoning bike thieves in the slightest, reading back over my reply it does sound a little like that (apologies I'll try and edit it better). I was trying to encourage having a good look at it and asking some questions to ascertain how 'hot' it was. If you were to get good answers then it's a great deal, with slightly suspicious answers I'd try and barter the seller down as without any 'evidence' you really don't know the source. With refusal of answers/suspicious behaviour I'd run a mile, report to gumtree & local police (hoping someone's reported one stolen and they're actually wanting to follow it up). As with anything sold second hand through GT/'bay etc you're totally at the mercy of the seller. Don't forget that loads of LBS do trade ins and would probably offer £100 towards a new bike for that particular age/model. If the seller seems like a keen cyclist, doesn't have proof of purchase & is 'selling for a friend' then I'd be tempted to ask why they'd not traded it in at their LBS...

Indigo, were you the guy who posted about changing a BB in a Defy 3 a few weeks back? How old is it? If you already have a Defy 3 with Sora/Tiagra (9-speed?) then the Defy 1 2015 with Tiagra 10 speed isn't going to be that much of an upgrade.

Totally unrelated, how are you finding the Z170? I'm still toying with an idea of upgrading my 2nd gen i7 as I have some weird USB controller related issues. Other good P67/77 boards are like hens teeth so upgrading board+cpu is looking like a 'cheaper' alternative (why pay £150+ on a secondhand board several years old!). I'd love to go 2011-v2-3/octa-core but can't justify and no real need with my light usage & gaming (BF1/The Division/SW:BF).

Its great! I went from an old i7 920 to this so the difference is like night and day! My setup runs BF1 perfectly on ultra at 1440p. I don't pay attention to frame rates at all, it just feels and looks fantastic!

Yeah my 7970's don't struggle in BF1, not even running just 1 of them. None of my system struggles (considering it was a 'budget' build 3-4 years ago!). SSD and high end mobo/cpu is much of that! I was semi waiting for Skylake but without a huge performance increase over my quad core i7 (happily running at 4.2ghtz) I should probably hold off. Add me on Origin 'RoadyUK' ;)

Back on track - anyone spot that GCN video of the upcoming expansion on Zwift?! There's LAVA! :o

I was semi-waiting/hoping for a Zwift version of the Rio Olympic course with all those monster climbs and fast descents, seems like they only do World Championship courses! (Richmond & London). Where's the next WC's?

Where's the next WC's?

Bergen in Norway.
1 bijillion times better and cooler (lol) than some dessert in the middle east.
London not on Zwift as a World Champs course. Think they just appealing to the masses, a lot more people rather ride around London than last years World Champs course.

Edit - I realise I called the sand place a dessert, as in, Angel Delight or pavlova, but I am not editing my mistake.

I am, just thought for the cost that keeping my Defy as it is and having a second bike could be ideal. Potentially moving jobs in a couple of months and will be commuting on my bike if I do and sometimes running back. Be ideal to have two bikes so one can be left at work if needed.

Current bike is a 2013 Defy 3 with 9 speed Sora (11-27 cassette) which will probably be the main commuter and the Defy 2 would be the weekend bike as it has a bigger cassette (12-30). Really in two minds about the Defy 2 now though as I text him and he says no receipt as he 'swapped' it with a mate for his old bike. He's had it for two weeks and ridden it for one so it does sound dodgy.

Fair play, sorry to go off on one but it is just one of my pet peeves! I've got extended family members who seem to surround themselves with "hooky gear" without really caring where it came from.

Currently planning next years cycling goals. I was a bit conservative this year having achieved 168% of my distance goal :o Next year I'm going to try and get out on some club rides with the guys from work and do two 100 mile sportives. I am sort of tempted to aim to do a metric per month but work tends to screw up that sort of thing and it is more likely to become a hassle rather than an achievement to do it.

A fellow single speed rider complimented me this morning for choosing the superior number of gears. Nice.

Chilly ride in this morning, though no ice at least. Just today and tomorrow to go then I'm on holiday until the New Year. I might try to get out for a ride or two over the holidays, see if I can tip myself over 5600 miles for the year..

Does sound like he's just trying to shift it, either due to the reason mentioned or maybe he swapped to the wrong size (or even swapped a MTB for it) and now just wants the cash before Christmas.

You're right to look into having a 'commuting' bike as well as another 'weekend' bike but in your situation I'd say it's not worth it, the Defy 2 and Defy 3 are both very very similar bikes, they have almost identical frames with just slightly different groupsets (with the same FSA/Tektro parts which wear out). I would say you don't 'gain' enough from the Defy 2, other than having a second bike.

If you're likely to commute wanting mudguards then getting another Defy doesn't solve one of the biggest Defy 'problems', the poor frame/fork clearance leaving you with limited guard options. You'd be better saving your pennies and seeing how much you actually commute. If you do loads and fancy some bad weather riding then getting a wider clearance workhorse, possibly with disc brakes would be the future. If you don't commute much yet fancy a racier/faster weekend ride then saving pennies would allow you to go for a more aggressive geometry 'race' bike for club riding/weekends etc.

The Defy 2 and 3 are good 'middle ground' framesets/bikes with their 'relaxed/sportive' geometry, good availability and cheapish price. But they do end up a little stuck in the middle when you're trying to specialise them more to particular riding requirements.

No prob, understand your concerns, thankfully bike theft and dodgy cycling gear isn't something I've seen much of around here! :o

168% distance goal is pretty impressive! I always say to set realistic goals you can break/beat with achievable extra effort, providing you increase them the next time! ;)

100 mile sportives are a good goal, probably going to get a few 100 mile days in myself, did 1 day this year (and it hurt!).
Have you never seen CX racing? :D If I killed a RD from falling off I'd be annoyed.
Haha, only from a distance, never participated! To me that mud looks solid (!) and jammed in there like you'd jumped up and down on it... :p

SS Goals. All Achievements Unlocked.

Good numbers & similar xmas break to me! Hoping to get out a couple of times for some longer stuff and going to see what group/club stuff pops up. Won't really be doing low mileage 'couple of hours' kinda rides, can do those with groups & on turbo. Need to get some good long solid base stuff done.
6672 miles so far this year. Wonder if I can get that up to 7000 by the end of the year.
Festive 500 would do that nicely! Good mileage mate, kudos! :)
