Road Cycling

Just passed 6500 for the year with a nice sunny ride today. Not bad considering I spend a third of the year out of the country!

Not sure if I'll manage the Festive 500 this year, I'm still stewing from not receiving my randal thing when I did it a few years ago :( ;)

Anyone with kiddywinks got a trailer that they would recommend?

We've decided that we don't want to spend on a Dutch bike, so looking at cheaper options. Ideally we'd like one that can be swapped easily between two bikes, and when detached at destination is a passable pushchair.

Nice! Quite clear here in Hereford after a misty start, sun was out but certainly not much warmth in the air (colder than yesterday). Around 3-4 degrees with only a couple of gusts of wind.

My last day of commuting for 2016, going to be around 2600 commuting miles this year (out of my 4000+ total) from my rough counting earlier (excluding Commutes on Training Log & totalling up whats left week by week was too tedious to do again).

Platy: If you struggle to find info I can ask a clubmate who rides with one. Don't think he has much experience of others though.

12,357km for me at the moment.

Down on last year where I just tipped over 13,000km.

I might get another 150 or so in, but moving back to the UK screwed me! Last year I was doing big weeks (400k) at the end of Nov start of Dec for our boys race weekend.

Get back on it in the new year, new job based near Warrington & hopefully some friendlier hours so I can at least ride the turbo. Working away three weeks straight hasn't helped my December!

Evening gents, looking for advice regarding pedals/cleats. I'm currently on 'stock' pedals on my Triban 5 and am probably going to change to SPD SL pedals. Before I purchase any, I just want to check if there's any difference in size. In particular where they will thread in to the frame. It seems like everything else on the bank has a certain size which I need to get right so just wanted to confirm before i purchase any :p

Thanks :) Also, I've decided on SPD SL because I used thema t the velodrome on a fixie and I really liked them to be fair. I don't plan on walking at all far while I'm out on the bike :)

EDIT: I'll be purchasing second hand/very cheap to start off with. Potentially these to be honest http://www.chainreactioncycles.com/shimano-r540-spd-sl-clipless-road-pedals/rp-prod5369

The thread is a standard size.

I've used those pedals - they're starter pedals - for around £32 you can get the next ones up which are (ironically) larger and therefore easier to 'find'.

If everything goes to plan I'll easily finish the Rapha Festive 500 which puts me over 6500mi for the year. About 500mi less than 2015 but I have also ran over 1000 miles this year!:)

Last day at work this year and I was able to ride in. I wasn't expecting to be riding in this deep into winter but it's been really mild for the most part. Hopefully January won't now be freezing. There was a southerly wind this morning which made for a headwind, but at least it was marginally warmer for it.

I weighed myself this morning for the first time in ages. I thought it would be bad news, given it's winter so I'm eating everything and have cut back on cycling, but somehow I've got down to 69kg. Not bad.

If you're buying second hand you should be able to find a 'better' set for £20 or less. I've got a couple of old sets floating around somewhere in my garage and I'd be happy getting around that for them. They're a bit heavy so best to avoid postage, local facebook buy/sell or club pages are probably the best place to start (or ask friends who ride)?!

I (and many others here) switched from SPD-SL (some of us even came from SPD) to Look Keo. We've found they have nicer cleat/pedal engagement making them better (easier to flip & clip) when commuting in traffic.

In future I can see going Speedplay for the dual sided aspect again. Coming from dual sided SPD they're so much 'safer' in traffic.

Pedal threads should all be the same size BUT REMEMBER the left pedal is 'reverse threaded', with the right being standard threaded ('righty tighty').

Depending on pedals you'll need a 'pedal wrench', but some more modern pedals can only be tightened using an allen key on the spindle (Keo's). Some will take both/either (most Shimano). Most basic/flat pedals only work with a wrench.

12,357km for me at the moment.
That's nearly 7700 miles! Massive kudos! One of the biggest here?!

Last 'official' day here too, finish at lunchtime and then the company has hired a fish & chip van for the staff. Quite disappointed there's no turkey.

Actually gotta come in briefly tomorrow for some security guy, arranged for 11am so at least I can have a lie in...!

Weighed myself earlier too, 74.8kg! Considering the amount of junk I'm eating already I'm considering that my end point for 2016 and I'll be hoping to be back near it the end of January... Although I've got a week in Jamaica drinking rum and eating jerk chicken mid-month to really hamper me lol :D

Get Look Keos :P

Just planning out festive 500, aiming to nail a big one 24th and 27th to get most of it done.

think I'll end my year with around 4.1k miles this year, commuting only! not a single fun ride :o wut.
#billynomates?
Okay, maybe we can consider you properly in the North now... a fish & chip van for Christmas?
'Battered Mars Bar' wasn't on the menu. Just battered fish or sausage! ;)

We always do something for 'all the staff' as we have a varied amount of seasonal staff (80-250) working on many different sites (5) who otherwise have no need to interact with each other. It's always a good chin wag with a huge prize draw for charity. 40-50 prizes last year so nearly everyone gets something (here's hoping I get drawn early this year so get alcohol lol)

Tempted to grab one of these just for turbo usage. Giant default (Perforance Road) saddle & Charge Spoon used previously lead to sores & numbness after over an hour. Fizik Arione (R3 and now R5 after I broke the R3) are ok but anything towards 2 hours numbness is starting again. Out on the road I can do 4-5 hours before I get it, thankfully no sores. Specialized Phenom on my Diverge feels much more comfortable and features a dropped middle & cutout so I need to try it on the turbo.

'You know you're a cyclist when...': The nicest pair of shoes you own have cleats on them.

I definitely reckon I've covered more distance cycling than all other means of transport combined this year.

I've spent about 16 days solid cycling.
