Road Cycling

My back/hip problem is continuing - I think it's basically pay back for me not properly warming up and warming down - so it's gone into spasm.

Still - on the upside - diazepam - possibly the greatest invention ever. I've not felt as chilled out and care free as this in years. :D

Several work related problems sit on my desk awaiting attention. I can guarantee they will still be sat there come 5pm because diazepam says no.

BennyC is probably best placed to comment given his gym skillz but I bet anything this is down to weak glute medius from a combination of sitting behind desks and on bikes...

I'd go with option a) at full gas to end up front of the queue but then I am an aggressive commuter.
So this is pretty much what I did with at least 3m gap behind me before I pulled into the lane and carried on at 28mph. Driver took offence overtook and brake checked me. Plod decided not to prosecute as I had committed an offence first. I thought at least words of advice would be due otherwise the driver think it's justified to brake check a cyclist.

Did you attend the grudas school of commuter filtering? :p ;)
Probably signal left whilst riding forwards as I wait for a safe gap to emerge or a driver to let me in. Gives them a chance to oblige before you cut them up :p
Pretty much what I'd do, I'd probably already have spotted a 'safe haven' in the stationary traffic as the front starts to move off and be close to it before the vehicle to the front of it moves off. Even if it meant stopping briefly, at least then being inserted into the traffic 'flow' before its moving. Depending on lane width and traffic speed of course there may be space to continue filtering on the right.

Commuting in traffic like that I always consider that the more predictable I am, the more likely I'm going to be given space. If you're inserting yourself into stationary traffic the car behind has no option but to move off after you, if you're dipping into moving traffic you're totally at the mercy of the driver spotting you, being courteous enough to 'let you in' and even more at the mercy of how much room they give you (in an accelerating line of traffic that's already been stopped and seen you 'overtake' them - seems to make them see red!). The majority of UK commuting motorists hate cyclists and won't give you room if you 'ask' for it when they're moving, you have to impose yourself in primary positions to get it. Much easier done in stationary traffic (they also seem more 'forgiving')! :o

I'd also be filtering on the borders between the two lanes so any driver with half a braincell could tell I was overtaking and not turning right, as the lights changing I'd be obvious about where I'm heading with a shoulder glance, ideal if you can make eye contact with the driver you're filtering in front of. Many times commute filtering through the same junctions/lights you'll have more of an idea when the lights are going to change, probably before the drivers, so you can get the hop on them finding your primary slot.

I suspect that is spot on because before this clam shell stretches were killing me with cramps and aching - definitely a weakness there.

We need pics :)

Glute med is mostly used during adduction and might get some activation if riding a bit wildly and/or out of the saddle. Normally tight hips/rec-fem, quads and calves, glute max & hamstrings. Depends how your fit is and how you actually ride as well.

Generally just sounds like being tight AF everywhere has just meant as your pelvic mobility has declined this stress has been transferred to your lower back (due to the increasing angle) until it couldn't take any more.

Once you actually have decently flexibility maintaining it doesn't take much if a stretching/mobility drill is done regularly or as & when something feels like it needs some attention. Some quick stretches in the shower after a ride (without falling over :p) isn't a bad time as the added heat and still being warm from the ride will help. Another stretch again before bed wouldn't hurt either. And holding each for at least 60 seconds not 5-10 like before a Sunday kick about!

'Couch Stretch' and 'Seated Hip Stretch' on top of the usual hamstring & calf stretches will pepper most things quite well :)

Any Brooks users here? I'm considering going from a Fizik Antares to a leather saddle for longer rides/Audaxes and wondering if its worth the expense.

I get on with my Fizik quite well, but I'm not (yet) convinced about it for multi day rides.

How come the police got involved? Did you end up coming off your bike because of it?

For what it's worth I'd have done the same thing. In situations like that though I always give the driver a wave of acknowledgement (whether I think it is required or not). Once you've done that even if they think you've cut them up it shifts the mindset enough that they forget about it.

i used to use a swift titanium, i got on well with it, though it took a while to break in

also, you may need more layback on a post as the rails are more "forward" in relation to the parts of the saddle you sit on than some

General wisdom is to use the saddle you're most used to for your longest rides

Appreciate the advice Benny, thank you. I think the warm down is generally where I've been failing the most, pretty stupid really.

Although my ignorance gets taken a step further when I take some pain killers and go out to practice sprinting:

I think I'll use these next few bike free days to give my bikes a clean up/lube up etc, if I can't ride my bikes the next best thing is caring for them :p

Flanders this weekend. Gulp.

Ive done it before (but had to bail on the last 20miles as I was too slow for the 8pm bus) but im a lot more anxious this time around.

End of my 6 week Vo2/power block training and retested today.

Coach seemed very happy with results. (also bear in mind I'm a middle aged man these days! 40 years old and only started road cycling 3 years ago)

start numbers 6 weeks ago.

Maximum Minute power MMP (3 min test -full gas average - 340W)
VO2 max - 46.8l/kg/min
Power/mass - 3.8w/kg
FTP 238W

Todays Numbers

MMP - 383W
VO2 max - 52.3l/kg/min
Power/mass - 4.32w/kg
FTP - 270W

Muscle content up, body fat down nearly 2%, weight down 1kg.

All in all, pretty chuffed with that. Coach was impressed with anything over 50l/kg/min on Vo2 max and also anything over 4w/kg is a very decent level and a solid increase in my base line stats.

Onwards and upwards now - Going to return to him later in the year to really get fired up for winter training, but for now - a couple of hard turbo sessions a week, but enjoy the lighter nights and join the local training bunch is my next aim.

Hope it's been useful keeping the thread updated on progress and would encourage anyone to find a good local coach as it's increase my knowledge/efforts and ability to train smarter by a huge amount.

How is that power/mass calculated out of interest?

Solid results anyhow :)

i presume he was using my MMP power output/weight to get that one. 383/88.7kg = 4.32w/kg

If you take my FTP obviously that figure is lower but same percentage increase i guess (old ftp/weight = 2.66w/kg against new ftp/new weight = 3.04w/kg)

They always feel faster when clean! ;)

Be careful, to me looking at Strava maps it looks like you're obviously speeding - @40mph through housing estates!? :o

You'll be fine, it's not like it's rained recently... Oh wait! ;)

No broom wagon this time should be your main aim! You'll smash it as you know what to expect! :D

Have really enjoyed your feedback and experiences on here, you've had a very good increase! Hope for us older guys yet! :D

Although you really didn't need a coach to try and keep up with me on Zwift! ;)

True. I did a 110m ride weekend before last so I think I'll have a good enough base to get round in one peice.

The weather doesnt want to make up its mind. One report says its sunny on Saturday and another says it's wet.
