Road Cycling

The Elemnt can also use your WiFi to upload Roady. That's how mine does it. Doesn't even need to use the phone to sync up. Uploads direct to Strava.

I noticed your thread on the bike rack: nice new bike. I'm very jealous! I was under the impression that thru-axle was meant to solve a lot of issues regarding lining up discs correctly everytime. Someone please correct me if I'm wrong...

Joined my local gym today. Want to supplement my cycling with a bit of swimming :) They also have WattBikes for when I don't want to use the turbo. They have some nice analysis features on pedaling.

Has anyone ever been able to make a comparison between Strava estimated calories and those generated when using a HR monitor?

I have no other interest in HR data beyond calorie burn so I'm struggling to justify getting one as I'd need a new cycle computer as well. If Strava is within 20% with its guesstimate I may as well keep on as I am.

The longer and more strenous your rides then the greater exaggeration of discrepancy. You can use common sense to a degree as realistically unless you are climbing for a solid hour at moderate intensity you're going to struggle to burn upwards of 5-600 calories per hour on the road.

There's no black and white as duration and overall intensity can vary so greatly, a faster ride could have been favoured by wind conditions and burn less than a shorter slower ride with more elevation.

I found 70% of Strava to be a good estimate for maintaining weight whilst 50% was good if looking to lose, based on a ride of moderate/challenging intensity.

I've recently got a PM but haven't had it long enough, or had the time or have enough data to look to establish a trend in calorie burn per hour based on intensity. This would have course be individual too :)

I swear mines used 4G from my phone to upload too, have you had this? At a friends without their Wi-fi and my ride synced to Strava.

Nice, get on those WattBikes with TrainerRoad and start getting some power figures in your head :)

started clearing a bunch of "useful spares" out of my shed last night. This can only mean another bike is coming soon, although i havent entirely decided what yet

Looks like you could clean the frame as well.

Shh :o

Only been like that for a couple of days, decided to head down a riverside path with a mate after work, shortly after it rained, bad idea!

Need to hassle Planet X and get my main bike's frame sent back and get it replaced due to the crack.

Need a spare bike again for incidents like this!

As good as the Elemnt looks I don't see why anyone would move from an 810. It would be such a pointless move.
Stability & reliability! Also a new toy with more features being added by a very active development team, I've felt quite let down by Garmin with my 810. Mine's only had 1 firmware update in 2 years and all the other 'gripes' I have with it are already mentioned on the Garmin forums by hundreds of other people. With no Garmin responses (admittedly it's only 2 ongoing issues - losing data fields/ANT+ connectivity when an external battery/power source plugged in & randomly 'losing'/resetting data fields). I have to hard reset my 810 3-4 times a week to get rides synced to GC, so probably 50% of my riding at the moment my 810 freezes when attempting to sync.
Managed to get the Stages meter that fits my crank delivered to a mate in America for £300 (even with current exchange rates). He's over next month so can't wait to give it a go!
Great deal, had considered doing this myself (was in Orlando end of May) but Stages were really getting slammed then & ideally I want pedals. Hope you enjoy it & your mate gets no issues with customs! :)
Yep, same app you use to setup, customise & update with.
Ah ok thanks, makes sense. Clever to hear you can sync it directly via Wifi too! That was hinted at with the 810 but never worked/added (is it in the 1000?).

Hit a bump when on the largest cog, must've been enough flex to get raked into the spokes :( Locked the rear up solid and ruined my tyre also.
Rubbish! Sure it wasn't some dirt in there too?! ;)

Hope you get it sorted and not too much damage to the rim & frame. Sort that PX frame too! They might change their mind! :p

Evening all,

Need some help with a really annoying front wheel hub (I think)

It's that double clicking sound, the wheel itself isn't catching on the brake/frame which makes me think its the hub.

They're Dura Ace 9000 hubs with the cone and cup style bearings. I took them apart and I couldn't see anything wrong but then I'm not the most technical. All the vids I've seem have the bearings "free moving" whereas these are set inside what appears to be a plastic unit to keep each bearing in place.

Edit: Should've said it only makes the sound when I'm riding, not if I just spin the wheel without weight on.

Is it happening once per turn of the wheel? Twice? Randomly?

Most things you read will point you towards bottom bracket but there are simpler things to check and eliminate first:
  • valve 'nuts', make sure they're done up tight and not rattling on the rim
  • spokes, check tension all around the back wheel (I've had this where a spoke worked loose and caused 2 other to, the click was the nipple being pulled to the rim)
  • cleats, grit trapped between the cleat and shoe can cause a 'click'. You may also hear it when walking, worth cleaning and spraying cleat/pedal surfaces with GT85
  • cable end, the cable ends from your front & rear derailleurs can catch on things or knock against your frame/crank causing a click per pedal stroke
  • mech hanger, I've had this 3-4 times on my Defy. The screws are so tiny/piddly small they are impossible to get any real tension on so the hanger will always get a little bit of movement in it, when there's grit/dirt in between it and the frame it'll 'click'. I've rounded the heads on 2-3 of these screws and they are an utter nightmare to remove, also very hard to source. I've had to buy spare mech hangers (@£16 each) a couple of times for the screws. The last time I fitted new ones I cut a flat head across the hex so I can get more tension on them & so far so good!
  • grit/dirt around your BB, depending on your BB will depend how 'easy' this is to solve, with my HTII I can remove the cranks, clean the grit/dirt and regrease bearings/spindle

Yup, can't wait! You could be right about the SCS thru-axle, I'll have to do a few dummy runs with refitting the front wheel to get familiar with it.

Wattbikes are good, have several club mates who own and use them in place of Turbo's. I can't imagine they are as 'fun' as things like Zwift, but for power training & FTP work they're pretty well regarded.

Any wheelbuilding stuff you're shifting let me know in Trust as I may need :)

It probably does that too. Sorry, didn't meant to say that it didn't use the 4G. Just that it can use the WiFi too :)

I have a Kickr at home, so already use power with TrainerRoad. But the WattBike will be nice for the pedaling analysis.

Gym also has rowers, and I need to work on my overall cardio/lose bodyfat.

Just basing that off what one of the Sky mechanics said about disc brakes needing thru-axles, and some stuff I've read. Because of how the thru-axle works, it holds the wheel in place better than a QR apparently (at least, in the same position everytime). Apart from increase strength, I imagine that is the reason to run thru-axle on discs over QR.

What was the ride on the Diverge like? I'm assuming you took it for a test spin?

Mine uploaded to Strava via 4G at the weekend, i stopped at the pub after the ride, miles from my wifi and it uploaded and synced as soon as i hit stop.

Anyone off of on here been cycling in and around Morzine? I'm fairly read up on the local climbs, planning to check out

  • Colombiere
  • Aravis
  • Les Gets
  • Col de la Ramaz
  • Avoriaz
  • Joux verte
  • Encrenaz
  • Joux plane
  • Col de Feu
  • Col de Cou
  • Col de Terramon
  • Col de Jambaz
  • Col de Pierre Carrée – Flaine

Any I've missed off the list?

I think it's once per wheel turn, it's very rhythmical so if I speed up it will click more often.

Hi, thanks for that reply. I think it is the front wheel but I'll have a look at the spokes etc around that. It has happened on two different bikes with the same wheel so I think the BB etc is fine.

I'd guess valve. Try stuffing something into the valve hole of the rim to make sure the valve cant wobble in there and see if that helps.

Just back from near there myself. If you're heading over to the Aravis, make sure to add in the Col de la Croix Fry. Easier to see from a map, but do the Col de la Colombiere>St Jean de Sixt>Thones>Col de la Croix Fry>Col des Aravis then descend back down the Aravis via La Clusaz and back to Morzine via Entremont and Bonneville. The Tour climbed the other side of the Aravis but it's probably too far to do a proper loop from Morzine. I can suggest a route if you're game though.

Watch out for idiot motorbikes on the Colombiere - I got hit by one on Friday and ended up in a French hospital. Only cuts and bruises luckily but currently testing out my Bikmo insurance so I will keep you all posted.

:( Sorry to hear that. Glad you're not too badly off though.

Getting Bikmo to chase the other guy?

Thanks OMS - are you on Strava so I can check your rides?
Re routes - we did 100 mile days with 15,000ft climbing last year, so we're game!

i have a box full of odd leftover spokes
Trusted you :)

Yeah I had assumed that the increased strength of the thru-axle was for stability, but with the tight tolerances of discs that the accuracy of the rotor/disc would also have to be better than with a QR!

Rode a Roubaix Disc the LBS had fitted to me to get correct measurements to order the Diverge as they don't normally stock them. It felt superb, so responsive and the frame felt so much stiffer than my Defy. Although there were no rough bits of road where I test rode it I did go up and down a few dropped curbs but it was hard to tell how much vibration the zertz were taking out.

Time will tell anyway, ordered a 54cm and got a call today to say it had come in a few days early! They're going to build it on friday for me and I hope I can leave work early to go pick it up...!

Ouch! Hope you're all ok mate & same with the bike?! :o

Getting Bikmo to chase the other guy?

Yeah, that's the plan initially. If not then I will probably have to get a solicitor involved I guess. If all that fails then I'll claim from Bikmo but I'd rather not.

Not massive damage considering but the frame is a write off and the front wheel too along with various bits of kit. Just a massive ball ache in the end. Doubt the driver will get charged with anything despite it clearly being whatever the French equivalent of driving without due care is.

Thanks all for the well wishes anyway! I will post that route when I get in front of a computer.
