Road Cycling

There's a false perception that this is an expensive hobby. OK, it has high startup costs, but a few tyres and brake pads now and then really aren't a big deal.

It IS bloody expensive!

All the money I save on fuel, I just spend on extra food I need to keep going lol!

I'm sure it costs more to keep my bike going than my car. But then again I only do about 1-2k miles in my car p.a.

Is it a pack of condoms or something :p
I lol'd.

14mm bar and looks pretty sturdy, should be fine. I've always been pleasantly surprised with some of the Giant branded kit, a friend has a Giant track pump and it's superb build (similar to my Joe Blow).

Yeah, a big extension, and then the likelihood that we also get a baby coming as well. I might as well give up any hopes of a new bike :D.

Sadly the extension does not include a "gym"/turboing room. Still relegated to the garage for that!
Haha, we moved from a 2 bed and a tiny garage (with no power), we squeezed a car & 3 bikes in (on street parking). Having a large drive now (can fit 3+ cars!) we just leave our single fiesta parked there and the large garage (with electricity) is my domain! :D

Having 'space' = baby. Be careful! Took us less than 6 months. Literally as soon as the DIY & Decorating was done.

Ride up grades don't buy upgrades. Become one with the machines you have ;)
Didn't you recently buy a new Canyon...? ;)

No it's definitely bloody expensive :p
/signed.

I'm considering buying 2 pairs of Rapha shorts to 'try out' for my birthday (and then 'neglecting' to send one of them back), while at the same time aware that my 4 pairs of day-to-day commuting shorts (Castelli Evoluzione XL) are a poor fit and need changing at some point... I could be spending £400 in shorts!

Roady - if you're after some decent bibs, evans have a sale (3 for 2) on Kalf. You could pick up 3 pairs of Kalf bibs for less than the price of a pair of single pair of rapha. Otherwise, check out the ASV race from Wiggle. Obviously doesn't have the same prestige but I'm really happy with both.

Realised I am riding more miles per week currently than I am driving, 200+. And I commute half that amount by car Monday-Friday :o

I like buying & eating ALL the food though so it's all good :p

I've done about 600 miles since February! (in my car)

I'm going to wuss out tomorrow though due to weather.......or should I say.....have a rest day after chain gang this evening. Yeh that sounds more heroic! ;)

not me guv, I do the bulk of my riding on a 4 year old kinesis T2!
Oh, thought it was you looking at an Ultimate just before SDK got his spanking red Aeroad. My wires might be crossed! :o

Not heard of Kalf before? If I was going for brands I didn't currently own I'd probably go Assos or Alé.

I've been through DHB before although not worn the ASV range (just Vaeon, Aeron & Flashlight). Would happily wear again for commuting but not really the 'all day' short I'm after. I know I can pick up more of my current 'best' shorts - Sportful Gruppetto (BodyFit Pro pad) for £50-60 but equally I know I suffer in them riding over 4 or 5 hours. I have 3 pairs. I also own a pair of Castelli Progetto which are some of the more premium offerings they currently do (Progetto X2 pad) and I suffer worse in those at the 3-4 hour mark. Castelli KISS pads (club kit & my commuting shorts) are ok for 2-3 hours but no longer.

Good work! :D

Last MOT our car had done ~4100 miles between them and I think I'd covered around ~3600 by bike, was fairly sure I could 'beat' the car this time as previously there was a month of driving ~65 miles per day (commute) when we were moving house. The other half getting pregnant many have had other ideas as she's been driving her commute the past 5-6 weeks (and will be until September). But I guess she's only commuting ~8 miles per day when I'm cycling ~9. The Diverge has done ~3700 miles since last September so I'm well on course, it just depends what extra baby/newborn miles the car accumulates (find out in May next year lol!). It'll probably be much higher than 'normal'!

Have done quite good maintaining my 'fitness' rating on Stravas premium 'Fitness & Freshness' chart at around 55 this month. I only hit around that level 3 times last year and didn't maintain it. It's very rough and ready (compared to TR etc) but I've found the fatigue rating matches quite well with how I'm feeling day to day. I tend to ignore the form metric on there, mostly because it fluctuates so much but also because I'm not trying to peak for anything specific (or resting before bigger rides).

Sweet! Maybe there will be deals on the base Noah SL next year then...!

Much better looking integrated stem/bars than the Spesh Venge. Looks very similar to the Canyon offering.

anyone here wear prescription cycling sunglasses or prescription inserts ? if so what do you wear please, interested to know as there's so many to choose from and it's difficult to fathom what's decent and what isn't.

Got out for 15 today and tried to focus on my position on the bike. I was finding that my arms was locked and my elbows would hurt afterwards. Seems to be no elbow pain but, when I was on the way home I had a little bit of lower back pain which I think is due to not being used to the position. Doesn't hurt now for instance.
