Road Cycling

What's the benefit of the higher priced gear?

All of my bib shorts are from Aliexpress (about 12 quid each), and jerseys for about 20 or under.

All have been fine, no quality issues, comfortable enough - what would I get from paying more?

Greater all day comfort and longevity. Over the years I've gone from DHB to Assos to Rapha and now won't go back. The repair service for Rapha pays for itself and the ability to sit in them all day long with no discomfort.

Benny, not enough electrical wires. Also get rid of that white tape and saddle!

One day I'll treat myself to some spendy cycling gear. Currently my most expensive outfit would be my £50 bibs and £8 jersey :p I guess part of the problem is riding a cheap bike, I always think the money would be better spent on improving that.

First ride for a couple of weeks (another work trip  ) and my bike is a click and creak fest :( Last ride I did I got caught in a massive downpour but I cleaned it all up properly after. Think some crud may have found its way into the seat stay and is causing the noise.

Cyclist down in Richmond Park on the first ramp of Dark Hill by the car park going up hill. Not sure what happened but a fair amount of blood on the road.

Had to take a 3 mile diversion at one point due to a head on crash that closed a nice section alongside the Thames. Not sure how that happens on a straight road in good light!

Two things not to scrimp on, tyres and bibs. A great pair of bibs will last you years and provide that comfort and protection you need for such an important and prone part of your body.

With a decent pair of bibs and a saddle that suits you, I'd say you could ride pretty much any old rust-bucket, as long as the brakes work.

I'd rather have a (functional) rust-bucket and decent bibs than ride a Dogma in a pair of speedos!

One of the great beauties of cycling is that you can buy £400 of stuff (brand new, cheaper if you go used) and if you've got a better engine, there's nothing someone with £9000 of kit can do about it....

The beauty of cycling is if you enjoy getting out on your bike then no matter what it costs, that is all that matters, anything else is irrelevant.

I ran into your club in Tatton. Asked after you but sadly you weren't out.

Nope. They were doing a 100 mile route and the sign ups were all a bit slow so I'd have been out all day so didnt bother, desperately needed to do some painting. They averaged around 23kph so would have preferred to have averaged around 27kph to get home at a decent time.

I beat some dude on a supersix up the hill towards my town on the home stretch of my commute the other day while I was on my single speed, and felt like a god :D

Yes, yes, he probably wasn't trying, but that's not the point!

Think our mob split the 100 miler into a couple of groups, with perhaps 1 group doing less than the planned 6 café stops. Idea was to get a lot of riders into new territory of a 100 without it being too intimidating.

Some of us went up Mow Cop instead

Lots of good rides today. Mine not being one of them. Got a niggling achilles thing that has come about from a strain wben pulling up on the upstroke of pedalling in my right foot. Bit annoying. More painting to do tomorrow unfortunately so likely no cycling.

Little disappointed about my new Ag2r la Mondiale jersey which is a touch to big and flaps in the wind around my front. Shame as its such an appalling jersey design, i love it! Also, you NEVER see any other ag2r jerseys around!

Yeah I learnt the first one the hard way. Tyres that came with the bike were rubbish, Michellin Lithions were a step up but still too prone to punctures, now on Pro4 Endurance and while the ride is similar to the Lithions I'd have had a couple of punctures by now and I've hand none.

No more mega cheap 'PlanetX super sale' style £10 bibs for me, Rivelo Honisters/Pearl Izumi Pursuit are now my starting point.

I know I should wash my mouth out for mentioning the word winter but I'm tempted to get one of these as a winter hack while they are on offer- http://www.halfords.com/cycling/bikes/road-bikes/13-innate-alpha-cyclocross-bike-2015 or more likely http://www.halfords.com/cycling/bikes/road-bikes/voodoo-limba-cyclocross-road-bike After finding a local sportive that has routes that take in local gravel roads and fords I quite like the idea of riding the routes but don't fancy taking my hybrid on 50 mile+ rides so this could kill two birds with one stone. Less than £300 with my BC discount.

Well this morning didn't quite go to plan...

I was pootling along at <10mph (small ring).

The chain locked up, nearly spat me off the bike but I managed to unclip in time.

I was greeted with this, thought it was just a case of taking the wheel off and reseating the chain:

However upon taking the wheel off I noticed this:

It then fell out :o

It probably looks worse than it is and I'm hoping a simple fix but any ideas/help?
