Bit hard to say without taking it apart but it may just need cleaning and re-greasing if you're lucky. I wouldn't be shocked if it's pretty knackered though.

it really isn't that dirty. It'd only snap if it was badly made or excessively loaded.

if the chain caught behind the cassette, it could theoretically stop the wheel hard, and if the axle was a weak that could snap it I guess.

Wondering why todays club run was so hard, then got home and passed out with a dodgy stomach and no appetite. Slowly settling down now! Hopefully only a quick one that passes through.

So what is this part, the "end cap"?

Sorry but I'm not great with mechanical stuff as you can tell!

It does fit back in the hole but very loosely, I'm sure I had a red washer with it but that pinged into a bush somewhere.

I've got the skewer separately and seems in tact.

Would this mean a new free hub and probably more cost effective to get a new wheel given their price/spec?

it looks like it should just push fit onto the axle, doesn't look like it's broken off, and it isn't threaded.

try just pushing it back in - the compression of the QR should keep it in place.

If it is broken, then a new whole hub, which essentially a new wheel in this case. Replacing the freehub won't do.

I'll give it a go tomorrow, thanks for the help.

The red washer annoyingly shown in one of the photos is no longer with me :(

My OH has been spamming Facebook and Twitter on my behalf so that might have been what you saw. :) Exhausted today and epic saddle soreness but rode well within myself so was never in too much distress and could enjoy it as much as you can enjoy these things!

It's what everyone says but everyone should do at least one.

Ah yes, that's probably where I saw something :)

Seriously nice work. I'm not shocked you're a bit fatigued and sore :p
