Road Cycling

See this is the weird thing. They have some pretty high end stuff in their shop, albeit think they more cater to the mtb scene.

It's a strange mix of bikes around here. There's either the local Spaniards on old 90's steel road bikes which look superb or rich foreigners riding Pinarellos/Colnagos etc.... and then me with a cheap Chinese carbon road bike and a weird Trek frankenbike :D

Annoyingly this stock of energy stuff turned up today which i'd ordered ahead of the ride and to get me through summer. This place seems to be a Spanish brand but is really cheap. First time buying gel in bulk and using a soft flask

Some great stuff. 45g carb gels for €1 and this bottle of 600g carbs for a tenner including the flash

You'll love it and have a great day, doesn't matter if he comes along or not! Just have zero expectations and just ride it for your own reasons, enjoy it for what it is! :D

Where is it? If not a million miles from me and they do late entry I might be tempted! You're in north/east Bristol aren't you? If it's above Bristol I'm only 1.5 hours away from Avonmouth/Stroud/Cirencester

Ha, he was my lift to and from the event!

Had an issue this morning riding in,

I have a giant defy composite (alu frame / carb forks) road bike,

the other day i was doing some maintenance and i had the rear wheel off, anyway i put it back on, rode in to work this morning

About quarter of the way i noticed that my rear wheel wasn’t completely tight so i tightened up the skewer locking nut on the wheel

However, my rear derailleur seems to be out of whack....When i select first gear, the chain skips over the top and comes off behind the cassette. Im not sure if iv damaged by derailleur or if i just need to adjust it (i think there is either a plastic screw thing where the wire goes in to on the derailleur to adjust it, or there is a metal screw which needs to adjust.

Hopefully it just needs adjusting and its not damaged

I have had some carby drink with maltodextrin and it made me super bloated and horrid feeling. Not touched it since, was only £5 for 500g tho so no big loss. I stick to :

This. I had skipping on a repositioned wheel and nearly came off because of not seating the axle properly in the dropout.

Thanks, ill try and reposition it

if that doesn’t work, ill try re-adjusting the plastic adjustment screwer for the derailleur

I’m hoping of these two sorts it and i haven’t "bent" my derailleur or hanger.

ill reposition the wheel before i go home, but i havnt got tools on me, so anything that needs adjusting that require tools ill do when im home

I simply can't persuade myself to spend more than about 60p for energy gels. I have just ordered some more high5 ones from amazon.

20x66g sachets with added caffeine for £12.77 or 64p each.

its the taste that kills it for me. The hilltop ones are literally just honey and some sea salt for electrolytes. But at £17/12 you're paying a good chunk.

Yeah same here. My reasoning for my purchase was they work out around 80p but for 45g which is around double the high5 ones. I usually target reduced short life ones as they're pure sugar so are perfectly fine well beyond a best before date.

I'm with you generally though. Can't justify the cost. I was watching the Cade Media videos on gels/energy bars recently. Funnily the end summary is that haribo/rice krispie squares are massively better value and not really any less beneficial

I did see that, good excuse to stuff your face full of rice krispies too, shame they're so sticky :D Haribos imo is a good option, I need to cad a top tube haribo storage for my new bike. That'd be perfect.

Yeah, my last long ride i had them loose in the back pocket which wasn't ideal when i was sweating all over them after the 3hr mark!

It sounds just like your hub isn't fully in the dropout both sides, so the cassette is a bit further out, then when the RD shifts inwards it's going off the inside (into the spokes?). You could have bent the hanger, but more likely the wheel isn't seated.

Check that before you fiddle with any limit screws. If it's still doing it, avoid that lowest gear to get home. Almost better doing that than messing with your limit screws and making things worse and no tools to sort...!

The ones you are getting in Spain are much better value than what I can find over here it seems. I don't mind paying for convenience and I would be all for those bulk things of gel. No one seems to do those in the UK though.

Kinda why I don't buy anything specific for cycling other than 'NAKD' bars - then look for deals from them in supermarkets to make them cheaper (usually 4 for £2.50-3.00 in a box so look for deals where multiple boxes are discounted), else the boxes on Amazon with 18 bars are always on deals, different flavours all the time - anything below £14 is a good price.

We're always buying 'lunchbox' bars for our packed lunches and kid snacks so I'll always grab them too. Nutrigrain type things. Or the Nature Valley ones. Whichever the purchasing department come back from Aldi/Sainsburys with.

Most of my club ride with a bag of haribo so most hill top stops they'll be offered around. I don't carry any myself, but if they wheren't on offer I would. Although I prefer jelly babies, they travel in a hot pocket better as go less sticky!

I did buy haribo to see if that worked as well but the problem was that they would never make it to the actual ride...
