Lesson learnt, don't make a robot out of wood. Oh wait, no one needed that lesson.
It's a shame there's such a lack of variety in the robots. Having watched a bit of Battlebots I have to say that there really is no comparison. Yes Battlebots is cheesy and over the top, but some of the robots are awesome. The weapons seem to be so much more powerful, things like spinning drums that cause robots to go flying simply because of their power and flippers that send robots 5-6ft in the air.
I wonder why there is such a difference, presumably it's either stricter safety measures on Robot Wars or lack of money to build such powerful robots.

The Robot Wars rules are far too strict with no real justification. The arena likely isn't as thick as the 2.75" Battlebots arena and uses wood instead of steel floor panels.
Battlebots rules allow up to 220volts, unlimited pneumatic PSI, unlimited size and flamethrowers.
So far it seems some of the over engineered robots have been quite boring and done a poor job and the ones knocked together in a shed have been much more fun. Like the one last night with all the fancy electronics inside and its weapons are a couple of tiny spikes. Or the one with all the heavily machined titanium and its pincer weapon was useless.
