Rome 2 : Total War

Can't wait. I still play RTW now and then, although the EB mod which is possibly the best thing ever..

It is odd having the Iceni as they only really historically come into play a long time after Rome has invaded Britain with the revolt we all know from history, involving Boudicca, so maybe thats why they included them..

Really the Catuvellanni would have made more sense as a more Essex/London/Kent people, the strongest in Briton (Iceni were tiny at this point) who fought off the first failed Roman invasion in kent and were there for the second.. suffering quite a downfall and betrayal by other states with there being quite a few known figures that would have made great characters in RTW2, like Caractus who fleed to Wales to another state/tribe helping them against Rome, causing a lot of problems, ambushes, melee battles etc. Until he was sold out to Rome, ended up in Rome itself and gave a speech so good they just let him off and let him live as a Roman for the rest of his life.. Quite an interesting story..
(Sorry for going on a bit there, enough of the history).

Anyway still thrilled, the Iceni screenshot is exactly how they are described in writings with the chalked hair (much like most of the Britons).. If they can have chariot units that show the true craziness and skill of the riders it would be awesome! They used to run down and balance on the yoke between the horses at full speed without falling... crazy guys!

I've said it before and I'll say it again this looks like it will be the best total war game in the series by far (and I loved the original RTW).

Unfortunately there aren't that many games out in the meantime to keep me occupied apart from Company of Heroes 2.

I'm thinking the same.

I'm also eagerly awaiting "Medieval total war 3", along with "Warhammer - total war".

Rome was my favourite due to the time-period, unit types & the factions - a great mix of classical different periods.

The one which will be the killer (imho) will be - Earth - Total War, spanning the globe across all time periods (that will be the day I no longer have a life!) - the natural progression will be total war meets Civilisation (hopefully).

Can't see it myself, the reason the Total war games have all come round for sequels like Rome 2/Shogun 2 & that's because of the conflicts in the 20th century don't really lend themselves to the gameplay, it would have to change the mechanics so massively that it could hardly be called a Total War game & the whole planet would require far to much to handle IMO, just how many faction would there be? the end of each turn would take an hour & that would be sped up.

I'm not saying it will be any-time soon, but it seems the natural evolution of the genre.

I agree the fighting style doesn't match the 20th century very well - but it would have to have a different fighting "style mechanics" for the different periods in history (IE, stone, bronze, iron, medieval, renaissance, World War , Modern, Future")

I'm trolling myself now but thinking about it they could possible do an American civil war one but I think that would be latest in history they could go without changing the gameplay, was the last major conflict with battle lines facing off against each other though as a civil war they would have to change how faction work.

I remember this being discussed in a past thread when they announced a "new" total war n the making before we knew it was Rome II.

I love the idea of an ACW version, I also think it could work very well as a kind of "Victoria" total war. Basically a sequal to Empire set in the 19th century. Some fantastic scenarios around empires in Africa, the east and south America, perhaps the ACW could even be fit in haha.
A bit of a stretch to contain so much, but I can dream :P

I think with some careful planning it could stretch, just about, into WWI.

All it would take to get all this to work really is a new mechanic to include some kind of air support (perhaps a command power rather than a unit - like the naval bombardment in S2 FotS)

I'm not so convinced myself the static nature of WW1 would be very hard to get working on the current campaign map system & with it being a world war not really much chance to expand you're own holdings as the majority of land that borders you're armies would be allied to you & can you imagine the strategic battle...select all units, drag a line formation then click on the enemy trench then sit and watch as the troops slowly walk into the machine guns.
I do like the idea of an African campaign (Rourkes Drift would be EPIC), though I would expect that to come as part of the inevitable Empire 2 if it gets a direct sequel at all, it was after all the least well received of all the games I liked it personally despite the AI being dumb.

I loved the idea of Empire Total War, they didn't quite pull it off though (so to speak).

The AI was terrible, sieges very disappointing and poor troop roster variety.

Still, I hope there is a sequel, either Empire 2 or Victoria as others have mentioned that gets it right.

CA are definitely up there as one of my favourite developers, Rome 2 is looking very good!

I wonder if the next one is going to be Total War-Hammer...

Oh I agree the actual WWI confict wouldn't be very good for gameplay (well, if they stuck historically anyway) but just up to that kind of timeframe as a maximum point is what I meant really.

[Empire] was after all the least well received of all the games I liked it personally despite the AI being dumb.

Me too, still one of my all time favourite games :) This and Rome are very close for me as they're so different in terms of gameplay they just don't compete imo.

Another big hope for me is the return of bridge/river crossings, in Shogun 2 I can't tell you how disappointed I was when I'd spent ages guarding a bridge waiting for the enemy to attack, when we get into the battle map I find instead of a bridge crossing just fields, no water in sight & my small holding force able to be flanked from the off I was so annoyed I nearly restarted.

No bridge battles at all from what I've heard; on the official TW forums, there's a list of confirmed features for the game, and one of these is
Armies can move over rivers without building boats/bridges.

So no bridge battles I guess.

Anyway, there's going to be official Rome II novels tying in with the game apparently. First one is published in September and is called "Destroy Carthage". It will be written by David Gibbins.

That's a shame, one of the big historial battles here in Briton was the Battle of Medway which was across the river Medway. No chance of reconstructing that then! :(

Was that a bridge battle or just a river crossing/ford? The latter might still be in the game, although if armies can cross rivers anywhere, guessing where they'll do it would be nigh on impossible.

Ah it was a river battle. I assumed they meant there won't be bridges/rivers on the campaign map that result in battle maps that are with rivers/bridges. So maybe there will be actual battles at rivers? relating to the campaign map.

I suppose it was obvious there can be river battles as the Teutonberg historical battle has a lot of water in it..
