It is pricy, and a total nerve charging for blood and gore, things that should be free, etc....
Can be had for under £30, so that's less than a quid per GB of hard disk space

I'm wondering, if I'm running an i7 920 @ 3.8 and 2x1GB 5870's at stock, would I see much improvement upgrading to a 4670k and a 7970 vs just a 7970 upgrade?
Not sure how much of a performance increase a 4670k would give me for this.
Exactly, cheap DLC for an amazing game is fine - as long as the DLC is priced reasonably & you can play the full game (with all the core features without it).In general I dislike DLC, HOWEVER, if the game is amazing, then DLC can be justified.
