Rome 2 : Total War

to be fair RTW wasnt in a good state either when released under activision and they had a 3 patch policy!

I dont remember RTW being all that buggy but then it was a long time ago I played RTW.

With the first patch and a few simple mods RTW 2 is actually very enjoyable.

When in cinematic view the graphics look better, but then total war games aren't about graphics they are about building your forces, protecting your settlements and this game does it very well - as per usual.

The battles however are over very quickly, they or you can soon route an enemy, even with mods but I'm sure over the next few weeks it'll all be patched up.

I'm enjoying the game, problems and all. Dropped quite a few hours into it already, since this the first total war game i've played since RTW soon picked up the idea and was soon winning huge siege battles..

I can't believe they've removed little things like the vids for agent actions, even if they just kept the old ones in it'd be better than none at all.

They only did those for Shogun and Shogun 2 if memory serves well, rest of titels never had those, but yeah I wish they did those cinematic for all their games.

Since you have mostly rank 4 units that could explain a bit of the dominance over the inexperienced enemy.

The numbers weren't what I was trying to show, the way that happened was they invaded my town and just bottlenecked themselves against a phalanx whilst the javelins demolished them. They literally funnelled their 6 units of melee into a long road straight into a phalanx roadblock and sat there eating javelins.

The A.I is such a facepalm.

Your setup looks similar to mine, what settings are you using? I can get 51 fps on mostly ultra. Looks and plays better than Shogun 2.

I'm using Very High, with no AA, no vegetation alpha, no SSAO or any other effects just the basic Very High preset and the game frequently drops down to 15fps causing the cursor to skip all over the place.

Bloody Hell, no wonder you are annoyed. I'm running with higher settings and getting a better performance. Fingers crossed the next patch sorts your problems out.

I know there are a lot of complaints about the AI, but it seems a lot better on the campaign map. The AI tends to use fleets much more effectively than it used to.

From todays experiences i've had, its seems to ONLY use fleets, instead of attaching over a clear land route they continually choose to try and get past my naval blockade

How are you all getting on with getting an ally to attack the settlement you designate?

Bit hit and miss for me, but I did get an african AI ally to take salamis for me, i'm Egypt.

Have you noticed the Shadows on very high looks terrible? Not sure if the latest AMD 13.10 beta drivers can do anything there bar enable better performance at Ultra/Extreme but even for my 680 it's too demanding but have no choice due to how bad it is. And yeah thats without any SSAO, Alpha, AA, etc.

Would be interesting to see screenshots on standard Very High settings with AMD vs Nvidia (no CCC/CP tweaking) - I can supply Nvidia screens.

Im still running a MSI HD6850 and while performance is generally ok there are massive frame drops in battle and during the computer takings its turns (that drags on for ages)

still, the card is 2 years + in age. How does it run on the nvidia 680's?

Performance for me has been fine since swapping to a 4gb card. This game is really badly coded tbh.

Does that mean it is badly coded? It looks great, so I am not surprised it takes such a powerful system to run well.

Of course, there are plenty of other coding issues with the game :p

Have been playing it all day and enjoying it.

I have been playing it all day as well, up to turn 66 now. Really enjoying it at the moment.

My frame rate seems to really drop as well in big battles, in little skirmishes it seems fine, but get a load of units on screen at the same time and it really suffers. Going to see this campaign through on the settings I have it at then probably wait for a couple of mods to come out, or some more patches to make it a little smoother if possible.

And, Rome was exactly the same 'out of the box'. Most of the TW games have needed a couple of patches.

New update out, stuck on 14.3/22.8MB.

Why does Steam do this?

EDIT: Ooh, 15.1MB now! Stuck on 0bytes/s still though, greeeeat.

20.9 now, so close. :'(
