Rooney's Derby Goal

Yeah, despite the goal, I must agree about Rooney's overall performances this season (and at the World Cup.)

This is a guy who despite scoring a great goal in his last match, is still dandering around being paid an obscene amount of money and for months now can't even perform normal basic skills for a top footballer (like for example.. I don't know.. having a good first touch? At least better than baby elephant!)

It's amazing how short some peoples memories are, do you remember how many goals he scored last season?

If anything that's probably the most useful fact in any argument to show how rubbish he's been all season. He was a goal-machine last season and his all-round play was good as well. What the hell happened?

If you think it's acceptable for him to have blip that's lasted from March to now, I think we'll have to disagree on that.

Well it does effect us, he was awful at the World Cup and been totally pap in the prem this season.

The entire England team was completely awful and it's unfair to pin that just on Rooney. He can't carry an entire squad of below-average players.

Leave Rooney out of the squad and they would continue to plumb the depths of mediocrity.

He was rushed back from injury and never really looked fit throughout the world cup, then spent most of the beginning of this season out getting fit. Since he's been back he's been excellent but just hasn't been scoring, he's laid several goals on for others (especially Berbatov) and has been key to our attacking play improving dramatically.

A striker is judged by goals I agree, but Rooney offers a lot more than just that. Besides its hardly surprising his form dipped after the WC and other bs (yes his own fault). Were there teams waiting to snap him up? Yes, because they know more than likely, like Torres, his ability will still be there. He can even score goal of the season off his shin :D

And who's argued otherwise?

This thread is about his goal, not about him as a player, not about how he's played this season, and not about how he's played in previous seasons.

But hey ho any opportunity to have a go

By the way that isn't just aimed at you J.D.C it's aimed at everyone who's decided to troll the thread by talking about his form, personal lift and what he eats for breakfast

One season out of how many now?

A great player is defined by more than one season.

A great player can influence a game he is an average Top European club player. Same as Gerrard, Lampard, Terry et al. They are not special in the slightest.

Since I have been watching football the only players that I have seen and would consider "special" or "world class" would be Zidane, Henry or to a lesser extent Shearer. Messi and C.Ronaldo look good at the moment but there greatest can only be judged when they retire.

It was a fantastic goal, there is little to deny that but he certainly isn't the messiah of England most thought he would grow in to. He still has time but not many more years.

No room in your World class bracket for Ronaldo (the older Brazilian one), Gabriel Batistuta, George Weah, Paulo Maldini or Peter Schmeichel for instance?

I'm not sure anyone is calling him the messiah (though maybe a very naughty boy in a Monty Python stylee) but the thread is/was about this particular goal and how good it was. Maybe he'll live up to some of the more legendary players given more time and maybe he won't but as you've said it's difficult to judge until after he retires which barring ill fortune won't be for a while yet.

 Huh?

Somebody brought up his form. I commented saying I personally agree with what they had said. That's not trolling for crying out loud.

Is it off-topic? Sliiiightly. It's still about Rooney. Ridiculous complaint to be honest.

I never watched those players in the flesh.

Yeh I would say that the players you listed would be right up there, unsure on fat ronaldo as he lost the plot.

Fat Ronaldo was a force of nature on the pitch.

He had the skill, agility and pace to skin a defender, he turned them inside out, I'm 100% convinced some needed some form of therapy after, as well as being screwed out of the ground.

He also, had the wonderful ability to smash past you with his physically ability, wasn't there a clip of him being fouled 5/6/7 times and then scoring? :p
