RTX 4070 12GB, is it Worth it?

It may cost £500. It may cost £600. It may cost £700. What's the point in the question if we don't yet know the price?

It's like saying the next RDNA3 GPU may cost £2000, then getting annoyed about this possibility.

You're right, we don't know the exact cost but I guarantee it will be very overpriced. So the fury is justified.

Or are you honestly expecting a bargain?

So, I think there's kind of a dumb assumption by tech journalists that the 'leaked' GPU specs must be the RTX 4070, because it has the same shader count as the RTX 3070.

I've compared the shader counts of successor cards in the same tier to previous generations, so far it's an unbroken rule that it always increases (looking at 4 previous generations).
We're so close to the release of the 4070 I'm pretty sure the leakers know what they're talking about. They're probably winging their way to reviewers as we speak

Unless Nvidia are planning sweeping price drops on the existing 4xxx line-up its safe to assume the 4070 will not be <£600 if it performs anywhere near a 4070Ti (if we go by assumptions that 4070 = 3080 whilst the 4070Ti = 3090/3090Ti).

So basically we will get 3080 performance for 3080 pricing.... 2.5 years later..... Wow, what an absolute bargain of the century right there.

No doubt the marketing will lean heavily on DLSS3.0 to prove the 4070 being 10x faster at producing your dinner than the 3070, all whilst ignoring the Elephant in the room that has just eaten your dinner and half the table cloth.

All sarcasm aside if the card does end up being >£600 and performing in the ball park of the 3080 then I hope it languishes on shelves until the price comes down. The same can very much be said about the other crop of cards from both AMD and Nvidia from the current generation. Only with stock being unsold can we expect prices to come down for both existing cards and future generations of cards. I really don't want to see mid range products (so X7XX tier SKU's) being north of £500 from any company as it just leads to anger and general discontent from all parties.

It will probably end up 5 to 10% faster than a 3080 for the same $699 so tech journalists can call it a win for consumers.

There you go i've written the script.....

Here is a script I just wrote for AMD.

Wait for Nvidia release their product, match the performance of said product and cut the price by around $100. Job done :D

But... but... but... rumour has it hat 4070 comes with... wait... a whole 12GB of VRAM.
That script hasn't worked out well for them so far..
That's what we think.

However, if AMD's actual aim is to shrink their GPU marketshare to 5% then it has been a roaring success!

I don't understand why people would rather pay $100 more for an Nvidia card if the performance is the same.

Assuming RT performance and efficiency is same. Of the top of my head

- cuda
- DLss still being better overall for quality and uptake
- dlss 3/fg
- streaming capabilities
- rtx video resolution

Personally I don't care for any of them except dlss.

You missed better resale value which is an important one. Much easier to sell too.
