Am i mad or sensible. i wanted to get the latest and greatest but have been pretty down hearted with the Nvidia GPUs. i've not built a new PC in ten years and i need a new rig. i have been debating which to get. should i get a 4080 / 4090. i do a lot of 3d work so i finally decided on going with a 7800X3d + a 4090 with a AM5 x670 mobo and 64gb or ram. But, now the 4070 is out i could maybe not buy the 4090, get a 4070 with all the latest other hardware and wait for the 5000 series and replace then and sell the 4070. the build is currently at about £3.3k but getting a 4070 puts it at about 2k and would save me £1,150.99 that i could put to a PTX 5090 / PTX 5080. Which will no doubt have better DP 2.0 connectors for future prooifing.

so Am i mad or cunning as a fox, who's just been appointed Professor of Cunning at Oxford University?
If you are only buying a GPU for the new build as an interim towards getting a 5090, Id suggest just get a used Nvidia card to tide you over, that way when you go to sell it, its probably going to lose far less value than a brand new card today thats likely to face a price drop soon anyways to shift them in numbers...

Looking at RX6800XT (not much in price between this and a 6800), not to keen on 2nd hand due to no warranty and no idea how its been used, as a stop gap card until next Gen but looking at the prices even second hand they are not far behind the 4070.

Unless I look to a 6750XT it seems I might as well buy a 4070 until the next Gen, have I fallen into Nvidia's cunning plan?

On a 1070 8GB at present.

Any reason you can't wait for the 7800XT?

It's only good value compared to what else is available..

Based on pure rasterization performance, AMD cards are better value.

But it's more complicated than that now..... DLSS is the more mature scaling tech and it's going to be a while before AMD catch-up with their own frame insertion tech and raytracing performance.

I'm playing a 4k, DLSS quality and the experience is excellent. Even with an overclock it's pulling 180 watts and never goes above 66c. This will do me until next gen Nvidia.

I know a lot is getting made about the better power efficiency vs a 3080 but if you undervolt a 3080 to 200w is only loses 5% which puts it right around a 4070 in terms of performance and efficiency.
What clock speeds can you get out of your 3080 at 200W? MY FE was a bit of a lemon with regards to power draw but I never went for low overall power when undervolting, instead trying to get the most out of stock limits. Sold it to a mate for cheap but sitll have the Gigabyte that can do ~1900MHz at 912mV which is enough to still hit 300W+ at 2160p.

What good is next gen hardware(4070/ti) if its completely gimped in design?
You are correct but there is no gurantee that it wont happen next generation either. We can wait for any possible Super cards but they will just be even more expensive, with no guarantee performance will match the price.
