will this cause a drop in the prices of 1070's then?

I suppose that comes down to where they slot it in the stack. If it replaces the 1070 and takes its price point then you'd think the 1070 would shuffle down a bit. If they slot it between 1070 and 1080 then probably not.
 
Yup, if those figures are true, only 5% fewer cores than a 1080 with non-X memory, then the miners will love them. The 5X RAM is the only thing keeping them off the 1080s...
The rumors of 1080s being bad for mining are just that. They are down to some review sites attempting to make "mining" benchmarks by benchmarking many AMD/Nvidia cards on AMD centric mining apps, the fact the 1080 performs so bad compared to the 1070 is more of a "which fish can fly the best" scenario. As it stands the 1080 has a noticeable performance lead over the 1070 in mining (albeit maybe no longer indicative of the price difference).

Multiple review sites and all figures I've seen show the 1080 getting substantially lower hash rates than the 1070 when mining ethereum, and not artificial or AMD-oriented benchmarks either. My own 1060 and 1070 ether mining has largely been in line with the expected perfomance I've seen from online benchmarks, using CUDA (not AMD friendly) miners.

It may be that the 1080 is better at other crypto-currencies, but ETH has been the big one recently and it looks like its been bad at that.

Well of course, like I said the 1070 get's less of a raw deal but it's still a raw deal because it's AMD centric. Nobody with a brain mines Ethereum on 1070 or 1080 though, you can literally mine an Nvidia centric coin instead, trade those coins for ETH and get more ETH per day than you would straight mining ETH, that's altcoin 101.

That's just not true, using the various cryto-coin comparison sites, ETH has been consistently near the best you can do with nvidia cards too, and decent CUDA mining software. It took a hit three days ago with the difficulty change, but that's just the last three days.

Not really going to be much in it tbh. I mean look at the 980ti being faster than a titan and it had less shaders.
Same scenario here.
1080 will probs be faster but only in benchmarks in games identical. So 1070ti is cheaper than a 1080 its a no brainer.

1070 traditionally slightly undervolted/underclocked was one of the best for ETH - multiple setups saw the 1080 significantly struggle - it seems that specific RAM latency and bandwidth configuration has quite a say in the final output rate of cards that are otherwise in a similar ballpark. Last I looked at it - granted only in passing - there wasn't an nVidia centric coin that made enough difference to offset that compared to just going all out on ETH.

10x 1070s running ETH algos here, the Nv centric coins don't get close, all under volted and down clocked on the core with +750 mem for around 110w draw.

Granted 1080s are a waste of time but 1070s are great for ETH.

You have to remember that altcoins exist in the post-GPU BTC mining world so that you can mine them instead of BTC then trade them for BTC (from which their dollar value is derived) or hold them in the hope their BTC value will increase (and thus their dollar value will increase), that hasn't really changed there are just more altcoins and if you want a specific one you don't have to mine it, you can mine a more profitable coin then trade. To my point, the 1070 is better at mining ETH than the 1080 is, it will produce more ETH a day, however both can mine other coins and generate more BTC worth of coins a day, which can then be traded to ETH.

None of my 1070s are more profitable doing it that way. If I overclock the core and run the TDP at 120% then I can maybe earn more ZEC, but it's a false economy because the extra electric offsets any benefit, they go from 100-110w per card undervolted on ETH to 170-180w overclocked.

So total power draw up from 1000-1100w to 1700-1800w, the difference doesn't cover the extra 700w of power consumption.
