Runescape

RS3 is in development and may bring a lot of what people want. We shall see.

That said i dont play a lot now, just slowly trying to hit the comp cape. Farming is my current focus while i play EvE online. I do a tree run every 24 hours at the eve server maintenance time. Ill play a bit more with EOC.

I know graphics don't make a game and that it's browser based, but, for me, that's what's holding it back. That's probably the appeal for a lot of people, they can play it from pretty much anywhere and I get that.

I don't know about that, it was horribly unoptimized until recently, my rig that can run anything but couldn't get it to do jack ****, very stuttery it was, but recently that's improved and it's flawless now, so maybe most rigs can run it these days.

WoW and GW2 are very different styles, but you can't say they look bad.

Exactly, art style, Runescapes is second to none in my opinion, its unique and nothing is anything like it, and for a browser game on the java platform (something mostly used to power payphones) it's very, very good. Disagree about WoW and GW2, although I don't hate on WoW that much, as it at least has an original art style. GW2 on the other hand is just ugly, it has a very plain, widely used graphic and art style, and is awful in comparison to most, even LOTRO looks better, Rift looks significantly better and so does TERA.

One thing I hate about WoW is the fact its not quite as old as Runescape 2, yet has nowhere near the level of graphical updates, check the evolution of Runescape, it's improved significantly with each graphical update, and has more technical visual settings and features than WoW does. Blizzard are significantly more wealthy than Jagex, yet cannot be bothered to update old areas, they just improve the graphics as you progress through the expansions, which to me put me off hugely.

I guess for me to play this again, I'd need a more modern control scheme, which comes hand-in-hand with an updated engine/graphics model. For me, it's much easier to get immersed that way as apposed to the point and click controls. I would love for a game to go for the approach of RS - having quite a grindy game but with so many activities and so many things to do, it's hard to get bored. The risk/reward system, the quests, crafting, areas, etc, it was just brilliant. The depth in some of the skills is fantastic which isn't matched in MMO's today.

Nah, you see something in Runescape that most are ignorant to, so you should play it again tbh, the gaming word is sadly lacking brain cells these days. It is your duty. :p

I bought a months membership over the summer to check this out again properly.

Its much better than it was when I left, apart from the bots.

The amount of them is ridiculous, everything I went to do in game had a load of people wearing the exact same clothing moving in exactly the same way that were un-responsive to talking.

Get rid of the bots somehow, and it will be worth playing again. But until then its simply too frustrating.

(btw, I started playing in RS classic, very close to being able to get a 10 year veteran cape :p)

Eurgh, tell me about it mate, these bots flood the marketplace with millions of each resource a month, it's absolutely killing the economy. The bots have always been bad, but the Grand Exchange absolutely made their numbers explode, so I blame that. :p

Can still remember when I restarted Runescape around the time the G.E was released, bloody hell it took a while to adjust, I didn't even know what it was for a few days, still sat in the banks trying to sell my goods. :p

The one thing the G.E did that really annoyed me was killed the social aspect of trading, back in the day you'd have businesses set up on forums that'd employ you, find you a buyer, set you a target (i.e 5,000 coal) and pay you for it and take a small cut for setting up the transaction. Now it's just 'whack it on G.E' which to me, has significantly improved the grind aspect, but now everybody is decked out in millions of gold worth of gear, you rarely see anyone who impresses you now. I remember back in the day seeing a Dragon med or a Dragon sq, and even the Dragon chain and thinking holy ****. These days though, if somebody is wearing any of them, regardless of their level, they get lol'd at and branded off as noobs. Heck, even when I used to wear full Dragon, with plate equipment, I'd get literal random abuse walking around, being followed by some fag in a phat, targeting me for being richer than most, but not richer than him. What is the point?

G.E also increased irl gold selling by a significant amount, too.

The fact the game had no form of an auction house set it apart hugely from the rest, lost a lot of appeal when the G.E hit the public.

I remember when dragon wasn't even a thing, everyone that was loaded had rune two handed swords.

Yeah I noticed that, so I started walking around wearing full ghostly and a scythe, that got quite a lot of attention :)

Totally agree - the art style is brilliant. I absolutely loved the setting of the world, and it really is amazing what they have managed to do for a browser based game.

Haha, when I played it a few months back I did enjoy it, it's just there are so many different games I want to play it kinda got pushed to the side. I have a small group of friends that I play most games with, and if they don't play something then it usually doesn't last long for me, purely because it's more fun to play games I like with them than it is to play games I love alone. Trying to get someone to play RS now, after they already ridiculed it 10 years ago, is an effort in futility. :(

My very first account got hacked (was around level 90 in RSC) after I quit, then the year later I made a new account, only got it to around combat level 40. When I logged in a few months back I was shocked to see it had been made over 7 years ago!

Oh, and now that you mention party hats - I was just slightly gutted to read the other day that Blue party hats are one of the rarest items in game and sell for an insane amount. I had one on my account that got hacked way back when, a good friend at the time gave it to me who went on to become a player mod (Kilkus, if anyone recognises the name)

Jesus, do you still play? You must be part of the furniture by now :p maybe you were that bank booth I just used. :p

I wouldn't be surprised if a lot of that attention was abuse tbh, some of the player base are dirt.

Even more amazing now it runs smooth as silk, although Daemonheim still looks better than most of the game, everywhere is still up to a certain standard, there are no more ugly areas anymore.

Well I just resubbed so I'll be on from time to time, Gouki Hadou.

Runescape is the one thing I regularly change passwords and security questions for, hadn't played it for months until recently and it took me about 20 minutes to log in. :p Sucks on being hacked though, if you resub I can give you a couple of things to help you out, but I'm a little poor atm for coins. :D

Oh ****, that's 2 billion lost right there. :'( Although tbh, like most, you'd of probably sold it for 40 or so mill a few years ago. :p phats have made a lot of merchants very, very rich indeed.

Try 3 billion, or thereabouts. ;)

I lost my purple to a supposed long-term friend. It was worth 200 million at the time, and is nigh on 1 billion now. I kick myself to this day, but I do find some solace in my Blue H'ween Mask. :)

Damn! You won't need my help then, your Mask alone probably outvalues my entire bank. :p

That being said I've lost over 30M on this Bandos armor, bought it when it came out, and you can get the entire set for 15 now. :@

Omaeka I held you in high regard until now.

Runescape! Of all the games you could play and you pick runescape. Gods.

It's the best MMO that you're not playing. :p It's so simple and chilled with so much to do, whats not to like!?

Evolution of Combat is up, damn good looking new weapons, and dual wielding is here!

For a veteran, you certainly seem rather optimistic for what is essentially an update which changes the very fabric of the game. Negativity is rife on the forums, and I'm inclined to agree with the majority. It's as drastic as the removal of the wilderness and free trade, if not worse. Simple mechanics have changed for the worse, not the better.

Some of my biggest grievances include the new combat formula, which means that being combat 100+ is commonplace now, whereas before it was something of an achievement. Also, the inability to aggro-train leaves much to be desired. XP gains are comparatively slower, and the WoW-inspired action bar is nothing short of plagiarism.

Ok so, although its not a perfect update lets address some stuff. First off, without a drastic change to combat, harder bosses and new gear is not possible, runescape has peaked in that regard.

New combat formula is designed to actually reflect your capability against a monsters. PS 100+ combat was NEVER a big achievement. over 40% of rs are 120-138 combat anyway, the game is inflated at the top end and i believe under 10% of players were under 100 combat.

The agro system is a bit strange ill agree.

XP gains are so so so much faster its pretty mindblowing. 140k an hour slayer exp? mental. Combat is SUPER fast.

The action bar is present in every MMO. WoW didnt invent it.

This, pretty much. The overall update is nothing but good and Runescape had hit a peak as far as equipment was concerned, it was too unbalanced for gold value of items, if any stronger items came out than current, on the old combat mechanics they'd of cost billions, just look at Torva!

Besides, they put momentum in there for those who liked the feel of classic combat, as it essentially makes you almost as powerful as somebody using the hotbar, while giving you classic auto attack only.

Oh how I wish it was 2004-2006 all over again. To me, that was the greatest Runescape period ever. So many memories. Unfortunately they completely ruined it after that.

Killing Goblins for XP
Starting out clans with friends
Frantically searching for people with the other half of the Shield of Arrav
Excitement and worry about starting the Dragon Slayer quest
Becoming a member for the first time and discovering the rest of the world
The awesome music
The Falador massacre (remembering everyone going mental trying to bank their items haha)
The original Wilderness
etc.

RIP Runescape
