Russian airliner missing over Egypt

Is there any actual forensic evidence, or is it the usual combination of speculation and every terrorist organisation in the nearby vicinity claiming responsibility?

Well, it's speculation based on the evidence being reported so far, in that it's reported the passengers at the rear of the plane are exhibiting burning consistent with an explosion, the cause of which is unknown.

But it's enough to make the authorities enact this measure

COBRA meeting in progress - they're definitely spooked. Thing is Russia and Egypt are saying an explosion in the engine, Islamic State have released a second video claiming they brought down the plane, featuring a caucasian Russian-speaking jihadi. Sad to say that I believe IS more than Egypt & Russia.

I'm not an expert at all, nor am I claiming to know anything about jet engines, that said my brother in law designs jet engines for RR, he thinks that the engines are designed to be so strong, they can practically withstand any kind of internal explosive failure, inside the engine housing itself - without causing serious damage to the plane, it would be very rare for an engine failure to cause the plane to break up instantly.

Obviously you get engine failures and explosions caused by bird strikes, debris, etc - but they normally don't cause the plane to instantly break up in mid air,

I guess we'll find out more in due course,

Channel 4 news just now had an interview with an Egyptian author whose written a book on the Islamic State - he was in no doubt that it was them judging by what they were saying on social media. Basically IS do not lie because if they do then to their moronic followers they'll become as bad as other governments.

Makes sense that IS were involved, if so I wonder what Russia will do in retaliation.

Presumably, the only thing that can do against ISIS is send in a lot of troops to hunt them down. Trouble is, do they want to get bogged down in a never ending "war on terror" in the Middle East? It's crazy to think they could look at what's gone on the past 10+ years in that region and think getting stuck in themselves would make matters any better.

Let's not forget, when the Moscow theatre was taken over Russia's premier counter-terrorist team decided to just gas everyone in the place with a super-secret aerosolised anaesthetic, hostages included. Then, because it was so secret, they didn't tell the medical teams on stand-by what it was which in turn led to 130 odd of the hostages dying from the effects of said agent.

So God knows what they'll unleash on IS if it does turn out to be a bomb that brought the aircraft down.

We fight them with one hand tied behind our back by treaties and conventions. Russia don't care about any of that crap.

The BA flight that caught fire on takeoff in Las Vegas was caused by a piece of engine flying through the fuel tank. So it does happen.
