Probably been asked before, but is this CPU a worthwhile upgrade from an AMD 1800x? I tend to game at 4k, and find my rig is stuttering a bit. Will be upgrading the graphics card to a 2080 at the same time.

3600, then later on in a few years grab a cheap 4900X.

I also game at 4K 60fps and this CPU is overkill as I never see it go anywhere near 100% but if you play games that require much higher fps then maybe consider a 3700X.

Well, I finally made the plunge 3900x order has been placed. Given I had some issues with the x570 build for a friend recently, I still went with x570 for my own board. Decided on the Asus Tuf board as I hear good things VRM wise and a cheeky m.2 SSD will be coming too.
16 gig of corsair vengeance LPX ram 3000mhz I have lying around also so that will go nicely ( fingers crossed it can do 3600mhz ).

I think I have a pants chip looking at some of the R20 results in here. Im running totally stock bios settings except I have my ram @ 3600 cl14 at 1.39v

Currently running a Corsair H150i AIO on my 3900x and seeing the above temps when running CB20. However when gaming I am seeing temps of no more than 74c but noticing the Thermal Throttling showing in HWinfo.

I don't remember seeing this behavior when I was using a Noctua NHD15 Air cooler?

I didn't think 3900x throttled until it hit 85c?

Any ideas?

some third party programs mess with the score, for example icue, if i have that enabled i lose about 300 points.

What software are you using to test with, if it has avx enabled that will induce throttling above 60c.

When running Cinebench20 the cpu hits 82c maximum as shown in the HWinfo screenshot but throttling shows as No in all 3 columns.

When gaming, lets say COD for an hour, the CPU hit's between 72c and 74c max but HWinfo shows throttling.

It might well be down to the iCue software and HWinfo having issues when running together as Metalface Mark says. . I will uninstall iCue and retest tonight.

Have you changed any BIOS settings relating to the CPU?

Download Ryzen Master Tool, Select profile 1 and Precision Boost Overdrive. Increase the following to their maximum values, EDC, TDC and PPT and click Apply. System may restart.

I have installed the 1usmus powerplan and set the bios settings as below as he advises.

Global C-state Control = Enabled
Power Supply Idle Control = Low Current Idle
CPPC = Enabled
CPPC Preferred Cores = Enabled
AMD Cool'n'Quiet = Enabled
PPC Adjustment = PState 0
I also recommend disabling PBO, which activates Precision Boost 2.0 for clock management. This ensures only temperature and FIT play a role for clock speeds.

I've finally gotten around to replacing the stock cooler with my Noctua. Temps seem lower at idle and when under load so hopefully all will be okay.

I use a D15 works fine with the 3900X.

I can't say I enjoyed the process of fitting it on, it's not something I've done all that often. Glad it's over.

I am using the same settings/power profile, but i have PBO enabled as i see up to 50-75Mhz clock speed increases for single and multi threaded workloads, so long as temperatures are not too high.

I'm going to keep with the stock cooler, it does a decent job i think and it looks nice too.

Yes, I like the look of it as well and I will hang on to it for a while yet. And even though I found it to be a bit on the noisy side, the cooling performance was quite adequate even when rendering.

I love the performance of the Noctua DH-15 though I'm not a great lover of the design (clipping the fans on to the fins). I might start looking into a better overall solution.

Agree with you on the noise, the problem for me was the noise it made when it moved from quiet to loud.

Since i connected it to my fan controller it just runs silently and as my pc is mainly used for gaming the cores never all rev up to 100% so it's a nice balance.

Is the fan controller a hardware solution or software?

I never thought I'd hear myself say this, but already I'm missing the pretty lights. I also am starting to prefer the less huge looking, more reasonably sized coolers.
