Because LvG is the saviour and we will not abandon the masterplan if a few dozen results don't go our way.

So 12 months of "moderate" success is the barometer now huh?

Didn't Monk have around 12 months (maybe a bit more) of really good results at Swansea....should he have been considered for Chelsea / Utd too?

What do you consider moderate success, afaik he had more away wins in 2015 than any other team in the league, can you describe that as moderate success?

As for 12 months, 99% of Newcastle fans are insanely biased but break down year by year. First year he did well, improved the team but nothing phenomenal. Second year was absolutely fantastic, that was a squad that should average mid table and he got them to 5th. Third year they had almost the entire first team squad out injured for on average 2-3 months, some longer, some less long, many repeat injuries and they had 40% extra games during the worst injury period from start of season to x-mas. There are few teams who would do well in such circumstances.

4th year and they were back to brilliant. Newcastle fans ignore it, so do most others but that year they had 33 points, were 6th and 6 points off the top which was 3 more points at the same stage they finished 5th. They were doing better than the season everyone said they were amazing..... then with half a season to go the owners sold Cabaye, their best player. Should they have lost as much motivation as they did, nope but can you understand it, yup. Without Cabaye and no replacement they lost any hope of european finish, certainly no chance of Champs league and no real chance of relegation, they also never dropped below 10th place in the second half of the season.

They improved significantly in the first half of last season after a while finding their motivation again and bringing new players in. So the only two periods they had bad form there was a monumental injury crisis the likes of which no team wouldn't drop massively or the club sold the season out from under the players and gave them absolutely no reason to play at all. Had they not won a single point in the second half of the season they wouldn't have gone down due to how good the first half was, as it was they finished 10th and never dropped into the bottom half of the table.

He's been doing a great job since he came back to the premiership. 4.5 seasons there only 1.5 seasons were bad, 2 were excellent, 0.5 was decent enough(last half season in charge).

Sounds like we're stuck with LvG until the end of the season, then it's Giggs. And if we end up on another bad run (we're still on one, really) and LvG goes, it'll be Giggs, presumably.

Utterly ridiculous really.

Utterly ridiculous is a good way to put it.

I'm sure the board reckon they can have their very own Guardiola in Giggs but it's just incredibly unlikely he has anywhere near the same degree of intuition or tactical knowledge. He's shown nothing in the past 3 years to indicate he's positively affecting players through his coaching... Apparently he works with Depay... **** me if that's any case for showing how underwhelming his influence is...

Giggs needs to be sent out to a club or two, where he'll be given the time and space to make decisions (right and wrong) within games without the pressure and amount of money that's at stake here.

Part of me wants him to get the job just so we can finally put this stupid fantasy to bed.

Sounds like Rafa is getting the sack today, they've called an emergency meeting and Balague tweeted "Rafa's time at Real Madrid is up...".

If the whole Giggs thing is serious then the United board are sounding more and more like desperate gamblers tbh, throwing their money on massive rank outsiders hoping for that one big (unlikely) win rather than putting the long hard work in to gradually claw their losses back, they'll just dig themselves deeper and deeper doing that. It was the same when Moyes was appointed with claims that he'd become the next Alex Ferguson after years of averageness, like you say it's more in the realm of fantasy. Gary Neville would probably be a better candidate than Giggs and he's struggling at Valencia.

People harp on about how he won La liga as if it was a miracle against the mighty Barca/Real. Early 2000s were one of the only major times in history both Real and Barca kinda sucked in the league. Barca dropped out of the top 4, Real finished I think still in the top 4 but 4th/3rd a couple of times. Deportivo came close to winning the league. Valencia had an awesome squad, spent themselves into debt that would harm the team for the next decade. It was an achievement but not some monumental outlandish epic unmatchable thing. They had one of the best squads at the time and the two biggest teams had major problems.

Outside of that, CL at Liverpool, lot of luck but still did it. However he was only less competitive the longer he was there and left when they were 7th largely down to his buys and his tactics(maybe 8th? can't remember). He was woeful at Napoli, they finished 2nd before he took over, they bought people he wanted, spent a lot of money and he finished 3rd, then missed out on the CL. Without him they are back to 2nd in the league, pushing for the title and are playing way way better football.

Real also looked so much worse under him since the start. Disjointed bad football, got the best out of no one really, although Bale has come back into form but not any better than he was two years ago. The choices he makes for the midfield trio are terrible. But for Navas being a demi god in goal for the first 10-12 games they'd have dropped a LOT more points and he'd only have been fired much earlier.

He was a moron for going to Real and Perez was a moron for hiring him but lets not just brush over what he's achieved as a manager because some people don't like him. Truth is, his record is up there with all but the very best in the game :)
