Samsung Galaxy S... highest spec Android phone released... also with QWERTY!

There are rumblings that Gingerbread will be out today/tomorrow....

I will not post a source as it's all unconfirmed. It's in the final stages of testing for sure, and will definitely be out mid April, or so it's said...

Given this I've decided against JVK - if the final, kosher release is possibly only days away, may as well wait.

However, wifey is out later and my urge to tinker with my SGS is overwhelming - was wondering about rooting my current JS7 install so, amongst other things, I can do a proper Titanium backup.

I've downloaded the appropriate rooting file from the Chainfire thread on XDA and I know I need to flash it using Odin. One thing though - what happens possibly in a few days time when Gingerbread is finally realeased and I install that - am I right in thinking that either it or doing a factory reset prior to install would wipe the rooting file?

It shouldn't matter, you'll be flashing over it with the GB files anyway so I'd just go for it. Factory reset shouldn't remove the root, but flashing the new firmware will, depending on what you choose. Stock firmware will remove it, but something with a custom kernel will probably have it's own root inbuilt.

Official Android 2.3.3 Gingerbread is out!

Looks like it has a lot of the same bugs as JVK leak. Backlights constantly on etc.

No Touchwiz 4, no lock screen animation, still using laggy rfs filesystem. Looks like Samsung have been working on SGS II instead!

Think I'll wait for a solid custom ROM with things fixed.

So this should just flash 'as-is' with no other mods etc needed, like I did with JS7?

EDIT: Yes it did - now happily running 2.3.3 !

Touchwiz 4 is for new devices only ive heard.

It should have the lock screen animation.

The RFS system used hasnt been laggy since the 1st 2.2.1 firmwares released last year.

The backlight has been annoying me though.

I've got to say it's working fine for me at the moment. Not getting a lock-screen animation or wallpaper, but personally I'm not fussed about that - my home screen wallpaper is set to jet black anyway.

When you say backlights, are you meaning those behind the menu and back buttons? These are going on and off as normal on mine - none of my firmware updates has altered their behaviour in the slightest.

If I had to make one observation, I would say the wifi isn't as good as JS7 - our router is upstairs and whilst JS7 could pick up a medium strength signal from downstairs in the living room, Gingerbread now rates the signal strength as poor.

****ing brilliant, battery fell out mid flash and now im stuck in the "phone ! pc" screen, and of course 3 button download mode doesnt work on this ****ing handset.

Brick brickity brick brick :@

Anyone around manchester area have a usb jig?

Now you know why we always say fix the 3-button mode before flashing anything.

You can pick the jigs up from the auction site for £3.44, that's what I got mine for. UK seller, same as the one posted earlier in this thread. Works 100% on my phone, should help you out.

I didn't see anything about fixing the 3 button mode before i flashed! There are #2833 posts in this thread, reading all of them isn't feasible lol. None of the guides told me to do this first :( how would you have done it without flashing?

Oh whoops! I'm sure I always advise that, guides should too. It's a sticky on the XDA forums as well.

Well you need to flash the bootloaders with working ones, using ODIN. That requires download mode, so you can't fix it without a jig now. If you have a 301k (iirc) resistor you may be able to throw one together yourself, but it's a fiddle.

I know I shouldn't laugh Tom, but that little post of yours had me in stitches. I had to wipe the laughter tears from my eyes when I read it :D It was the Brick brickity brick brick that sent me off into a fit of the giggles :p That and the thought of what facial expression you pulled when the battery fell out was a winning combination :D I really hope that you get if fixed mate but in the mean time .... thanks for cheering me up (in the nicest possible way :D).

lol the fact you're laughing at it is making me laugh, so not too bad!

To make things (worse or better depending how you look at it) it's not my phone, it's my gf's phone. She's had to go back to her old crappy LG Arena until I fix it. At least my desire works, but i cant hear anything to make a phone call from all the earache im getting atm!

Sweet jezuz :D It's always the same huh? You'll never hear the end of this now and be prepared to hear these words on more than a regular basis ..... 'Well, it USED to work fine until YOU touched it!!! :p

I've just had to explain the whole thing about bricking and flashing and three button combo to my girlfriend in order to shed a little bit of light as to why I found what you wrote so hilarious. She's just looked at me blankly and said, 'You can be a right geek sometimes Al can't you?' :D

lmao :D

She'd asked me to flash it though after seeing how much faster my desire was with a custom ROM, so she can't absolve all responsibility.
