Samsung Galaxy S... highest spec Android phone released... also with QWERTY!

Can't honestly say I've been blown away by JVK, having used it for a few days now - amongst other things, the wifi pickup is lousy and I can't detect any noticeable improvement in battery life.

With the Easter weekend coming up and, in my case, the whole of next week off as well, I'm giving serious thought to taking a leap of faith away from stock roms into the custom world.

I'm thiinking of starting with something stable and solid, namely Darky's 9.3 Extreme. Have been watching this video:

My JVK install is rooted and when I boot to recovery, I have Clockwork Recovery showing up. With that in mind, I'm pretty much good to go, aren't I? Anything else I should know?

One of these days I'll find a ROM I'm happy with and stop farting around, I promise :p

I'd recommend cooking a JS8 ROM in the ROM kitchen, they give me better performance than Darky's 9.3 or 9.5. Battery life is the same. This way you can also completely customise the ROM to your needs and wants.

I'm not 100% on the flashing procedure coming FROM a Gingerbread firmware, but I've heard people mention that the JVK bootloaders are pretty good with JSx firmware, so should be ok. So yeah, cook a rom and flash it with CWM, see how you get on.

ROM Kitchen

JS8 is Android 2.2.1. It's generally regarded as the best release at the moment until the Gingerbread issues are ironed out completely. Basically, it's fast and reliable. It's on the ROM kitchen, go to generator and it's the 5th one down on the 'base ROM' tab. I recommend doing a WIPE version unless you're currently on the exact same base ROM.

EDIT: and I recommend the JPY modem, seems to work well for me and many others.

Darkys 9.5 is great, better than 9.3 I would say.

Yep, went for 9.5 instead and installed it - very nice indeed. Noticeably faster than stock roms ...

Went back to JS7 first and then installed 9.5 on top of that.

EDIT: Got to say, I'm lurrrving Darky's 9.5 - the speed is great, as are all the other little apps and modules that come pre-installed, such as BLN, which adds a feature that I sorely missed on the SGS.

I've got an email stuck in my outbox. For some reason it didn't send last night, I noticed it this morning.

I've tried telling it to discard it, it says it's deleted, but it's still there. I've restarted the phone, no difference.

Anyone got a suggestion?

You could try going to 'manage applications' under settings and applications, then finding your mail program and clearing its cache/data. Not sure if it'll help, but might do. You may have to re-download mails again, not sure if that will remove the account settings either.

Trying to help a friend remove the bloody awful samsung lick screen glass effect slider thing from a 2.2.1 phone. Cant find out how to do this on this version. Anyone have a link?
He wont custom rom or just use a simple lick code.

Also anyone got a previous version of android sdk with the afb in the tools folder?

It removed all of the accounts, at least that cleared the outbox :D

Had a thought today, given the sgs2 is slightly slimmer than the original sgs what do you think the chances are that the battery from the sgs2 might fit giving a nice boost?

Picking one of these up tommorrow for £135 (so long after I posted this thread, hah) as my mate is selling it to make way for his SGS II... looking forward to playing around with it. :)

These have dropped in value like a stone. Second hand market isn't great for Android devices. :( Still, I'll be keeping mine for another 18 months, and it's under warranty for all of that. If I get anything for it then, it's just a bonus.

Has anyone tried Touchwiz 4.0 here yet?

I'm not quite sure what you're asking, but basically my operator (Hutchison 3G) agree to replace or repair the phone if it goes wrong for the entire duration of the contractual period. They also offer a replacement handset to keep you going in the meantime if a repair is deemed the best course of action. These depend on what the specific store has, they're usually rubbish.

Havnt tired it yet but the guys over at XDA said it works well. just the notification bar is missing or bugged and a few FC. Im gonna wait a bit and stick with MIUI, might upgrade if its comes in a darky rom.

The question is, is it better than the likes of LauncherPro, Go launcher EX etc? I reckon once all's said and done, probably not, so we're still where we were months ago.

Anything else from the SGSII worth porting? I saw some gimmicky zoom function that appeared to use the accelerometer...
