Samsung Galaxy S... highest spec Android phone released... also with QWERTY!

For those of you who are fed up waiting for the "official" release, but aren't quite ready for (or sure about) a custom ROM upgrade yet, have a look at: http://www.theandroidsoul.com/how-to-install-xwjvh-on-your-galaxy-s-i9000/ which contains step by step instructions and direct links to all the files you need! :)

Updated my new (Vodafone) Galaxy S yesterday without any problems.

Will maybe have to give the official one a go once it's released to see if Samsung were able to make this phone decent.
So far it's the modding community that's got it up to speed and made it a decent device...

Would I be wrong in thinking it'll be a royal PITA to get back to a stock rom once rooted and on a custom rom?

You can always install an official ROM which will get it back to stock and you'd lose root again.

I'm wondering, does installing an official ROM revert all previous settings that were changed using One Click Lag Fix, SD Speed Increase, etc.?

I've just disabled the lag fix so I can flash with a custom ROM, there are other tools that I used though and I hope they won't make any problems whilst upgrading the ROM.

The lagfix will have to be removed before you flash, otherwise you risk bricking the phone. I don't know how the SD card speed increase works, but if it changes a system file, this will be overwritten by flashing a new ROM. Not sure what else you mean by 'etc.' When you flash, generally it's a good idea to do it from a nice clean base, so I usually factory reset and format SD cards before if I'm flashing a new ROM to the phone. I back up everything first of course.

Etc. stands for "I can't remember, I was drunk at the time of tweaking" :p

Thanks for the replies guys, already disabled lagfix using the inbuilt OCLF tool.

I can't get my head around what settings to backup. Thinking Titanium Backup should suffice for the most used applications plus whatever media files I have on the SD card can be backed up on the HDD. Contacts are backed up on my Gmail account and messages by GO SMS Pro.

Anything else I haven't thought of?

An unrelated question, any way to get a portrait wallpaper with Launcher Pro or do I need another app for that? If I set anything in portrait mode, it stretches to 2 or 3 screens even though I've got them disabled (only using one screen).

Don't backup system settings if changing ROM, just the stuff for apps where you really need it. Don't think there's much else besides that.

I don't think I need any apps to be backed up TBF.

There are a few apps that came with the stock ROM, such as ThinkFree Office, that don't use the Market. Not sure if I need them though, might just install something else.

Much as I liked it, I was getting awful battery drain with Darky's 9.5 Extreme, so over the weekend I flashed Juwe's 4.3.1.

Got to say it's massively impressive - phone came off charge at 100% at about 10pm last night and as of 10pm tonight after a day of my 'normal' usage, had dropped to 60%. Darky's would probably have been around 45-40% and I'd be being tempted to put it on charge overnight.

CM7 and MIUI were also in the running, but having been reading about all three on XDA it was the slight bugs in CM7 and the claims of larger battery life for Juwe's that swung it.

Something weird happened to my 2.2 Galaxy S the other day. Was playing Wordfeud and the game complained about losing the wifi connection (Even though it was all up fine). Tried to reboot my phone but it wouldn't boot up. Had to use all the usual tricks like taking the battery out for a few mins etc and the phone booted up but it was as if my phone had never been used before and was asking me all the usual startup questions. Once in I noticed all my game save data had been lost on all my games and now my games don't seem to save either (Internal phone storage). So now when I play a game of Trial Xtreme I do a few levels and before it would autosave them but now it does not and I have to keep starting all over again from the 1st level each time. Going into Wordfeud it always saks me for my email address where as before it would remember it. Also it does not save my internet browsing history either. Anbody have this before and can help a phone noob out?

It's not writing to the internal SD card. No clue why but that's where it stores all that data. The internal card might be corrupted or dead, hard to know. Might be worth a factory restore.

Interesting... so it looks as if JVO is a later version than JVH, which I thought was supposed to be the 'final' one... for now anyway! :)

Edit: For those who wat to read about it first, the thread mentioned above can be found at : http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1084794

Work mate has a 3 branded 2.1 device, using OBIN can I just flash to this standard ROM?

Not flashed GS before as I have GS2 :p

Tried a few tricks but nothing worked so did a factory restore and all is good again. :D
