Samsung Galaxy S... highest spec Android phone released... also with QWERTY!

I have a strange problem it happens at random about every week or 2. The screen will just not turn on.

Yeah, this is what I meant by "sleep of death" in my earlier post. I called it that because I had it on my Omnia too, where it was apparently very common and that's what everyone called it. It's only been happening for me since the last firmware upgrade (on stock firmware). It's very irritating.

I was getting similar on all 2.3.4 roms, however you dont get this on MIUI or CM7 so im guessing its only samsung software, one of the main reasons Im on MIUI now. Mine was really bad and happened around 10 times a day on various different kernels.

Official 2.3.4 JVQ available through kies today :-)

Nice, but it's old news now! That said, I think JVQ is the best official Gingerbread ROM to date. Go ahead if you like the stock Samsung ROMs.

CM7 and MIUI have taken a massive leap forward in battery life over the last two weeks. Now Gingerbread bootloaders can be used with the custom ROMs (with SD card access) and a fix for the battery drain (turned out to be something to do with SD card sleeping) means that the idle drain on AOSP ROMs is as good as official ROMs, and the drain whilst using the device is only just a little more than the Samsung ROMs.

I've been using Galnet MIUI Twooey II and can get more than 2 days battery life from it without much fuss. Stock ROMs aren't a lot better than that at all, so couple that with the speed and smoothness of MIUI or CM7 and you've got an awesome experience on your SGS now. The only common things missing are FM Radio that works properly and TV out. I strongly urge you to try CM7 or MIUI now that they're this good. As I said above, Galnet MIUI Twooey II is excellent. Give it a go here. Would be great to hear more feedback from those running a very recent custom AOSP ROM, especially on battery performance now several fixes have been added.

EDIT: Forgot to add - the 720p video recording still has some skips in playback for some. Worth checking.

yes ive been using cm7 and muiy twoooey, just something odd about them, ie the camera isnt as good as stock roms, choppy 720p recording, yep they still havent fixed it despite saying its better :D

i did like the new red and black keyboard though ;-)

That's funny, I preferred the old keyboard. Also didn't like the new Twooey theme at all, but downloaded a new one from the theme manager in MIUI and it's really nice. It's called East Jade.

The problem is that Samsung never released a kernel source (I think that's right) so there's an lot of reverse engineering going on, but it's extremely difficult to get all these things working properly, especially now a lot of focus has shifted to the SGSII.

Try downloading a Samsung App called 'fastcam' and see if it fixes your video choppyness. It looks fine with that to me, not sure if it's 720p though. The problem is only in low light, seems like maybe some of the camera driver settings are off somewhat.

Still, the speed and responsiveness of the AOSP ROMs can't be touched by Samsung. I was using the stock JVQ for a few weeks until they improved the battery life of CM7/MIUI. It just doesn't compare.

Currently running Darky's ROM v10.2 and the battery life has been...impressive.

14 hours off charge at the moment and I'm sitting at 20% battery. That includes 4 hours of music, TweetDeck on push, a couple of 20+ phone calls, numerous texts, tweets, email on push and internet usage.

I've moved to Australia and my SGS doesn't connect to 3G, only GPRS/EDGE. Will this be solved if I put a ROM on with an Aussie radio? Or, as I'm on a Doc ROM I can flash the radio only?
Or could it just be in my APN settings or something?

write your APN settings here and which network you're on and I'll tell you if you're doing it right. Aussies use 2100/850 and possibly a recycle 900

Im sure Edge is 3G, as my wife on o2 get that, and on voda I get HPDSA (think thats it).

Does it connect to the internet. If so that it should be fine, if not try a Aussie modem flash. Or look up your APN settings for your new supplier.

I flashed from darkys 10.1 to 10.2 and almost bricked my phone. Good job for odin and 10.2 RE.

No. EDGE is basically sped up 2G like HSDPA is sped up 3G (very simplistically). Technically it's nothing alike and the speed difference between the two is huge, an order of magnitude. In speed it goes:

2G (GPRS - EDGE) 3G ("3G" - HSDPA/HSUPA) 4G (LTE)

Thanks. I'm on Telstra (but switching to Wollies deal soon I think).
APN: telstra.internet
Proxy: 10.1.1.181
Port: 80
User/pw/server: not set

Not sure if anything else is relevant. Can I get GSM band info somehow?
I know from my girlfriend's SGS2 where 3G is available (plus over been in the middle of Brisbane) and it's definitely this device with the problem

Telstra uses 850Mhz which is hardly ever enabled from my experience of most androids shipped in the EU (seen it like twice in >50 handsets). Someone wrote a great guide so I'm just going to link to it:
http://androidforums.com/samsung-ga...rk-frequency-your-samsung-i9000-galaxy-s.html

You just need to enable 850Mhz and (possibly) reboot. Don't go disabling the other bands, it won't save battery or anything.

I've been running CM7 for months now and whilst I'm quite happy with it, I'm starting to fancy a change - was reading your link last night and quite like the look of Galnet MIUI as a next port of call.

I'm running the 23/7/11 CM7 nightly in case that's important - would it have the necessary bootloaders so I can just flash Twooey II over the top, or would I have to go right back to EZ-Base as per Galnet's getting started page?

Assuming I go right back to EZ-Base, after flashing that do I then flash Twooey II or is there an intermediate Galnet ROM that I have to install first?

Sorry, this whole bootloaders thing confuses the hell out of me :p

The easiest and most reliable thing to do would be to flash stock JVQ with repartition (after backing up of course!) and make sure it's factory reset and the internal SD is clear. You can get JVQ from samfirmware.com and you can also get Odin to flash it with. If you don't know how, post back here and I'll tell you. Then you can just flash Speedmod for gingerbread to give you CWM back, then simply install the Twooey II zip through CWM and it should do everything for you.

By flashing JVQ you get the Gingerbread bootloaders and a clean base to start from, which I think is important as lots of people report random issues when they haven't done this properly. I've always used a clean base to change ROMs, and never had an issue.

EDIT: I'll try to sum up each step:

1. Backup
2. Factory Reset
3. Format Internal SD card (sometimes called USB storage).
4. Charge battery to full.
5. Flash stock JVQ using Odin with repartition. Reboot.
6. Flash Speedmod for Gingerbread T24 using Odin. Reboot.
7. Put Twooey II zip on internal SD card.
8. Enter recovery mode (CWM) and install Twooey II zip. It shoud clear partitions and reboot on its own, first boot takes a while.
9. Enjoy MIUI and restore what data you need. I recommend SMS Backup and Restore for messages, works well.

Thanks for your help. I tried that but the option is not there for me. The link confirmed I can get 3g with a new modem though. That said, Wollworths are doing a great payg deal herr now which works on Optus (900mhz) so may do that anyway
