Samsung Galaxy S... highest spec Android phone released... also with QWERTY!

Is there a fix or workaround for wifi error when trying to toggle it on?

Never heard of that error. What firmware are you running? Maybe try deleting the wireless network and connecting again, make sure the ip address is set to auto and not static. Maybe you could be more specific about the problem?

If it's the error in darkyrom from a few versions ago where wifi doesn't turn on it's actually because the phones not got enough RAM - either reboot or shut down a bunch of stuff and you'll be back to normal.

I don't remember that Android version. Is it an operator firmware, how did you flash it? Your problem might also be caused by an app, check and remove any stuff that is no good.

There's a MEGA bug in the current Orange firmware that stops the network stack from working and requires you to restart the phone 4+ times a day. Horrific bug - Samsung put out an approved image (via kies) that was actually a test image. Thanks Samsung, you're awesome. It has been yanked and last I heard they were working on it. Oranges ROMs arn't technically much different, I'd consider going stock/stock with root if you want to upgrade now.

Absolutely, go to a stock ROM and flash it using Odin (not Kies which probably won't let you do that anyway).

I ran JVQ for a couple of weeks, which has now officially been released (same build), and it was mostly fine. There's a few bugs but no showstoppers. The main bug was a phone.apk force close when hanging up from a bluetooth connection, but only some people had that, not all. Samfirmware.com for the download.

Stuck with Galnet for a couple of days but had severe battery drain, last night culminating in the battery dropping from 100% to 44% in the space of 3.5 hours, despite the fact that the phone was in 'airplane' mode for three of them. Real shame as I was really starting to like it.

As of right now, I'm running Darky's 10.2 - given that the first custom rom I ever flashed was Darky's 9.5, it feels kind of like going back to an old friend. Speed is good and battery not bad (100% down to 62% in just under 6 hours), considering I was on WiFi for a good hour-and-a-half solid installing apps earlier this morning.

Been having same battery drain on Galnet, gonna try re flash it again sometimes improves the problems.

Before that I was on Darky's 10.2 and it was going all well till 1 morning I woke up and the phone just wouldnt charge, tried cable, usb to laptop, my power mat, nothing worked. So I restarted the phone after that ever app was forced to go landscape and many other crazy bugs, so I went to MIUI.

HAve to say thou apart from the drain the speed is years apart, on darky it seems ok but on MIUI its like my phone is 5x faster.

I think I was getting the infamous 'Android OS' bug - when I checked the battery usage, at times Android OS was reading stupid amounts like 30-40% or more. Spent an hour or so on the battery section of the Galnet forums and tried various things suggested there, sadly all to no avail.

Oooer, never heard of anything like that before - had a few 'sleeps of death' on CM7, but never a refusal to charge or the landscape only thing. Will keep an eye out for them ...

Will before when i was on MIUI Galnet i was getting 1 day battery which is all i need really, some what of a heavy users so dont expect any more. Ill try reflashing from base JVQ and see how it is.

I've never had issues with crazy battery drain on MIUI or CM7. I don't know if maybe certain apps can trigger it or something, but if you follow the instructions I posted above exactly, it ought to work as it always has for me.

As for upgrading through Kies, I usually would recommend doing a clean install properly as it'll be faster and less prone to issues coming from older versions of Android, but Kies should back up first and restore the apps I believe. If you're not sure, just make sure you back up everything first. You can use Titanium backup if you're rooted (and know what you're doing, only back up apps and don't restore settings) or you can use a program like Share my apps to email yourself links of all the apps you have installed for an easy restore. SMS Backup and restore works well for messages too.

It's just that most of the apps can be redownloaded from the market, but that won't restore the user data (save games and what not), also I have a couple of games from gameloft who aren't on the market at all.

Would backing up retain the user data?

Where is the data saved? I think quite often its in the internal SD in a folder called 'data'. You can simply copy/paste to back that up, and it should work. Otherwise you could restore app data with Titanium Backup if you're rooted, just don't restore any things relating to the android system when changing versions.
