Samsung Galaxy S... highest spec Android phone released... also with QWERTY!

I'm hoping I might find some help here.

I'm looking into updating/rooting my girlfriends Galaxy S, but it's a bit of a minefield....I'm used to updating/rooting/roms on my S2, but not the original S.

It's an Orange phone and on the Orange Gingerbread update that borked some of the network reliability. Is it possible to simply update the firmware to the official Samsung one with Odin thus overwriting the Orange firmware?

Or do I need to root first?

Any help would be much appreciated as I'm pulling my hair out unsure what to do! She's not bothered by the extras that a ROM would give her so I'd just like to update to an official stock if possible.

Should be very similar procedure to the S2 mate. Use Odin to flash a generic firmware (JVT will do just fine) and you should be good to go. Just make sure you backup everything first. I also factory reset and format internal sd just to make sure things go smoothly. Also, with the Galaxy S you may need to repartition the phone when you flash with Odin. Use a 512 pit file. It's all there on XDA.

Im on Darkys 10.2, if you go to xda forums and look for the thread. It should have all the info you need.

And most of it shold be the same as yours.

How old is your GF phone (can it get a GPS lock) I did a solder mod to mine and now I get great locks. Before I was luck to get a lock after 30+ mins.

Cheers for that, I've found a set of instructions that lays it out, but that instructs me to root using SuperOneClick and unlock the phone before being able to install the generic firmware.

Is this the case or can I just whack it into download mode and the generic firmware will replace the Orange one?

No need to root, just flash it and it'll work. Imagine root as more of having an 'administrator' account. This gets wiped when you flash (like a reformat and reinstall of OS).

Anyone tried to install cm 7.1, it just goes so crazy it starts to install after 0.5seconds it just reboots see the samsung boot screen then the CM one and then it trys to install the rom again. This happens on 2.3.3 and 2.2.1 and loads of different kernels so I'm not sure what im doing wrong here xD.

I use quick settings & have used a widget to turn my APN on and off.

But now they dont work, the widget says it turns it on and off. But nothing happens. Quick setting used to work the same. Now it sends me to the data roaming settings page. And I have to click the boxes to get them to enable.

Anyone know how to fix this.

Im with voda on contract.

My girlfriend has just got a new SGS2 so she's given me her old SGS. It's running everything at stock and has never been updated in any fashion since she bought it. Is it worth updating the firmware etc on it? and how do I go about doing this?

I've no clue what ROMS are or anything like that, I'm pretty much a noob when it comes to mobile phones.

Cheers

Ok cheers, I take it that I need the mini USB cable to do this?

The plastics on the front/back and also the outer rim is slightly scratched and there's also a small scratch on the screen. I'm wondering is it possible to get these replaced? and for what cost and where?

yep you need the usb cable, no idea about the screen and outer rim, cant see it being cheap though

Chrome bezel is a pita to replace, requires dismantling most of the phone to get to.

Get a casemate and forget about it :)

Got a question relating to Custom Roms.

I originally modded my phone to Darky's Rom, then I moved onto Cynogenmod and then finally onto MIUI rom.

My question relates to the booting up of the phone. When i power it on, I see the Original Galaxy S screen, then the Cynogen Mod Screen, then it goes to the MIUI rom.

Is there a reason it does this? I was hoping that going to the MIUI rom it would remove the CynogenMod screen.

Anyone have any ideas?

Thanks in advance.

What's the quickest rom with the best battery life?

im using the miui ics 1.11.9 build at the moment, not bad at all, very smooth

As for battery life, depends what you do play on them, everyones different.

Ive tried loads of CyanogenMod 7 roms upto 181, i dont think there that great.

Tried the alpha 7 of ics as well this morning, ran quite well, but i cant see what all the fuss is about

I'm wanting to update my Galaxy S to the latest, available firmware (currently using 2.1). First off, I want to back up my contacts, which I've done via Kies. Now I'm wanting to update a lot of saved SMS, I understand to do this I need to download an app from the market place? The only problem is, is that I can't access the market place, it won't connect.

I've only got a PAYG sim in this phone, as it was given to me by my gf, as she upgraded, so I don't have any data or owt like that. I was under the impression that I'd be able to access the market via my home WIFI?

Any other suggestions on how to back up all my SMS?

Cheers

Some wise people gave me some very good advice on backing up Contacts.
Get yourself a Google Mail account and transfer all your contacts onto Google and you'll never have to worry again.
You are also able to link Google Calender with your phone which is excellent.

Anybody else use other Google stuff in conjunction with their phone?
