Samsung Galaxy S... highest spec Android phone released... also with QWERTY!

Been out of the loop for a while. Newest stable, bug free stock rom?

Is CM7 decent for battery and stability now? Is it complete? Nightly or stable 7.1?

Not that fussed about ICS until it's ready. Thanks for any help with this.

Get the latest nightly 181, it includes all fixes since the last "stable" release. There were no further releases and probably won't be since CM9 is in the works.

Or get MIUI MintBerry Edition if you fancy that style.

ICS releases are relatively stable now, onecosmic's one is the one I've been using for the past two months, teamhacksung's ICS port is also updated regularly and is to become a new CM9 ROM.

Also, there's no such thing as a "bug free" ROM. AOSP ROMs are better in that regard that they don't include any of the Samsung's crap. Had minor bugs with all ROMs though.

Stock ROMs are very laggy, without rooting, tweaking and removing some stuff I never enjoyed any of them and custom ROMs are potentially prone to other bugs. On the other hand, my SGS needed an unofficial ROM to fix some issues I had so there you go.

Thanks for your detailed response. I used to have this handset but now have an S2, so I was previously using CM7 but never kept track if they 'finished' it, so to speak. There were always feature omissions. I updated to nightly 181 but it wasn't usable as a daily ROM. Too unstable for the user I am doing this for, and doesn't offer enough over late Samsung roms to be worth the sacrifice of some stability and battery life, based on my experience.

I did then, on a whim, try teamhacksumsung's BUILD 12 of ICS. What can I say? It's excellent, no real issues so far and it's a lot slicker than CM7 has ever been. Waiting on battery life feedback now, but looking great. Really surprised how finished it is, maybe because I was using CM7 for a long time and it always had issues. There's a few bits that aren't 100% complete, but no show-stoppers for daily use so far. Great work by all concerned to bring it to SGS, it runs great.

Agreed - for a supposedly 'hacked' ROM, it's pretty damn amazing. None of the known bugs affect functionality that I use on a daily basis and it's been utterly stable since doing another factory reset as per my earlier post.

I expected it to very much be a work in progress and feared it might not be day to day usable - massively impressed.

As far as battery life goes, mine came off charge at 100% and after 18 and three-quarter hours is sitting at 60% - pretty happy with that.

I cant seem to get a gps lock, so that might be buggy.

Known Issues

720p Video Recording laggy
Camera does not support scene modes
FM Radio does not work.
Phone unnecessarily gets data connection on device encryption password enter screen.
Cannot format external SD *
Sometimes duplicates listing of external SD files in the media database
Android OS battery usage display higher than normal.
Sometime wrong SMS selected for forwarding
Format internal instead of external SD when requested to format ext. SD
Transfer speed slows down when screen off
Notification power widget uncustomizable (the widget made it into the repo, but the CMSetting app didn't.) (temporary alpha build of CMSettings)
Gallery face glow FCs
Screenshot shutter sound
No camera zoom
Camera crashes when changing resolution
TV Out broken on sleep
TV Out not working for HW-decoded video (probably won't be fixed)

I recommend testing it, but it may not be a daily driver for you.

So we aren't getting an official ICS update afterall.

How does one go from the latest stock firmware to an unofficial rom? Do I root then install CWM somehow?

You'll need to 'root' your phone first, then follow the steps in this video:

It's what I did to get it installed on mine - the actual process of installing ICS is quite easy and the ROM itself is fantastic IMHO :)

But I wouldn't mind making a nandroid backup first, but I need root, and root wipes it all...

Presumably I won't lose data from the internal SD card?

You wont lose any data stored. For example any data for applications is kept safe as well anything in mnt/sdcard. This should include your nandroid backup. If there is specific data you wish to back up then Titanium Backup the specific apps and their data and then move them somwhere safe, just in case.

I've decided against flashing ICS because of the high % battery Android System consumes, I get tired of charging it up as it is.

Peoples screens on xda showed 30% but I realised since that it's an overall percentage so if the phone hasn't been used, then it will be high...

Do you mean Android OS or Android System process?

And what would you want to fill that usage, it's a % of the battery use, might as well be anything else.

I get much better battery usage with ICS than I did with stock JVT or CM7.
