Samsung Galaxy S... highest spec Android phone released... also with QWERTY!

Just got one of these through Orange. I was waiting on a HTC desire, but eventually gave up, I missed stock once and now the operators say they have absolutely no idea when its due.

Anyway, I managed to get it for £20 pm with 200 minutes, unlimited texts and "unlimited" (i.e. 500mb) internet, free handset. So all told, a pretty good deal (been with Orange for ages).

A quick question, can anyone tell me what this phone comes with?

Obv it will have the 8gb internal memory I'd guess, not the 16 (Orange don't say), but does it come with an SD card too? Also does it have a slip-pouch or anything?

Finally, has anyone bought a car kit for theirs? If so, any recommendations? I'm gnna buy Co-Pilot for it I think, so it'd be nice to have a car kit of some kind. Loads of cheap ones on eBay of course, but wondered if anyone had any recommendations.

Thanks :)

No SD card. No slip pouch. Mine just came with usb cable, headphones, power.

OK thanks, I guess the fact they are putting 8/16gb in as standard makes up for the lack of an sd. Shame about a slip pouch though, they really are very useful for candybar touch phones.

My Touch HD has lived in its standard velvet pouch and it literally doesn't have a scratch on it after 18 months.

Think i'll be buying a pouch ASAP...

EDIT: Forgot this, what sort of battery life are people seeing?

None of the reviews seem to touch on it. Is it just the usual ~ 1 day of normal usage that most of these 1Ghz smartphones are getting?

Doesn't really matter either way, the deed is done now ;) Just curious as to what other people are experiencing i guess.

The first few days were awful for me - I didn't give my phone a big overnight charge before using it so maybe that was the problem. I was seeing less than 7 hours life in my pocket from 99% charge.

That rapidly improved over the course of about 4-5 days. I'm unsure if this was due to me installing JuiceDefender Ultimate and getting a bit more Android savvy with regard to saving power - turning off wifi/gps etc - or down to the battery bedding itself in. Either way, I can now get 2 days+ standby out of it.

Sounds about normal for this type of phone then, that's OK.

I'm not a heavy user and having had the Touch HD for a year and a half now, I am used to always turning off WiFi, Bluetooth etc. when they aren't needed. Not a big "fiddler" with my phone either, just use it when i need to.

I get 5 days standby from the Touch HD, be interesting to see how long I can get out of a device with effectively twice as much processing power!

I've noticed that the battery seems to go further the more i use the phone, but that could be down to me not playing with it constantly so the screen's on. The screen is always the main power drain if you look at the power % app.

Just ordered one through Vodafone retentions on a 12 month contract, slightly more expensive, but worth it to be able to upgrade more often. :p

Same contract as I currently have with my Hero :-

£40 a month
£100 for the phone
300mins
Unlimited texts
500mb data

£580 total over 12 months, that'll do me.

I`d get onto voda and slap them down, i got Desire free, 600 mins, unlimited text, 1 gig net, for £20 a month (upgraded from a nokia 5800) Im due for another 2nd line upgrade in november, i did enquire about the samsung , and they "said" they would do the same for that aswell !!!

On a 12 month contract? That is the reason its quite highly priced :)

Edit: That said, it still works out cheaper and is a better deal overall, you should get 1GB net without question.

I'm on £30 p/m, unlim texts, 1gb internet with Vodafone for 24 months. First phone with them, so I didn't expect a great deal. I reckon it'll serve me fine for the duration - it'll be interesting to see what I can upgrade to in 2 years. Oh, and the phone came with the contract without a fee.

As I said in my initial post, I expected to pay a little more for the privilege of staying on a 12 month contract, so I'm happy enough with the deal overall, obviously not as good value as 18/24 month (they offered me it free on a £30 18 month contract with double the minutes and data), but I wanted a shorter contract. :D

The handset can be had for £410 sim only (or even less if you shop around but can't name competitors on here)

Then you can get a vodafone 12 month sim only deal £20 a month 900 mins 3k txt and 500mb data and then £100 cashback from a well known cashback site. That works out to £140 which is cheaper than your retentions deal. The phone is the 8gig version as opposed to the 16gig from vodafone direct.

(there is also the iphone sim only deals which are 600 mins and 1gig data for the same price, I assume they work in any phone tho and not just iphones)

Waiting for a call back from vodafone tomorrow though I don't think they will offer me a better deal that doing it that way in all honesty.

@wellibob that desire deal they are offering through their twitter deals account, though their galaxy s deals are rather meh in comparison

@naknakkus was that from vodafone directly, their webstore doesn't offer that, in store they wouldn't do that and their twitter deals aren't that good either

Finally looks like this is appearing on T Mobile according to their forums - now to see what they offer me on retentions as I've already got my PAC code from them ;)

Finally tried one of these out in a shop yesterday. My, it feels cheap compared with the milestone I have at the mo :/ is there anything other than the Droid 2 set to come with a really decent solid feeling build?

Been playing with mine all day (oo er), sure its more plasticky than rivals, but the upside is that its very light and the thinnest smartphone I have seen (thinner than my old HTC Touch HD thats for sure).

I think its really smart, tbh the only thing I dont like about its design is the USB connector is on the top and not the bottom, but its a tiny niggle.

The screen is just amazing and it feels like a very fast phone, even without Froyo.

Very impressed so far.

WRT a case, I have bought a "MOFI" slip pouch from the bay, due in then next day or so. Will report back :)

Noob question inc.

For some reason, on incoming calls, my phone only vibrates even when it's on full volume?! Where's my ringtone?! lol
