Samsung Galaxy S... highest spec Android phone released... also with QWERTY!

Well mine has gone back today for fault inspection as the Wi-Fi signal just seemingly drops, even when I'm stood next to my router.

I noticed the problem very early on but its slowly ground me down, especially when I get a stronger signal at the bottom of my garden with a HD2 tha I do with the Galaxy S stood next to the ruddy access point..!

Guy on the phone said it wasn't the first to be returned for that error so I guess we'll see..

Just got off the phone with Orange and the chap said the phones are being recalled due to a fault. I asked if he meant the older version, but he was under the impression it was all of the Galaxy phones.

Weird.

Can't say I have had a problem with my phones WiFi over the past day or so of usage, been fairly solid.

Did he say how they would be recalled?

No he didn't say.

I did point out they are still up for sale on the web site. TBH I got the impression he was confusing the new and old phones it was only after reading ManCuBuS post I thought they might have a problem.

Ah well, wait and see I suppose.

I certainly haven't had a problem yet.

WRT to the case, it came today. It's actually very nice. Japanese I would hazard a guess (not too up on my symbolic languages). Its very fluffy and plush, the inside is frankly sumptuous! Fits the phone absolutely perfectly, and the little bobble clasp at the top is a nice touch.

Am I allowed to post direct links to eBay listings? If I am, I will edit this post, if not, a quick search on eBay for "Samsung Galaxy S MOFI" should bring up the auction. They are very cheap, less than a fiver, and you get to pick your colour (I went for black).

I use one of those cases for my Desire ... they are pretty good, (and I found the outside, as long as it's clean, good for removing fingerprints off the screen).

Do they have a full touch screen keyboard ?

Could someone post a pic ?

Well its more or less a standard Android phone, so it comes with the standard Android QWERTY keyboard. Samsung also bundle the "Swype" keyboard as well, you choose which you want.

I can't post a picture of it at the moment as it has the only camera I have access to kind of built into the back of it :D conundrum!

Either way, if you go to Google video and just type in "Samsung Galaxy S review" there will be tonnes of video reviews that will you show it in action.

Got mine yesterday. Pleased with it so far, although haven't had time to play it too much yet.

Quick question - Other Android phones seem to have an option to manually check for firmware updates in About Phone, but I can't see anything in there - does this phone have it

I'm new to this Android thing, if I install something like Launcher Pro and other bits and pieces over a few months and decide I want to revert back to how it is right now, will factory reset put everything back in its place? i.e like a new install of 2.1?

Have to say, love this bit of kit, plastic back lets it down a bit but the screen makes up for it, love the swype and it seems much quicker than anything else I have used.

A factory reset will do that, yes.

For example with Launcher Pro, you can literally reset it back to the default Launcher in about 10 seconds.

This applies to pretty much anything you can install from the market.

Cheers.

I'm looking at it from a noob standpoint. If I install then uninstall a load of programs in Windows, eventually (in my head), it's full of unrequired registry entries, bits and pieces are left over from the program/app etc...is this not the case with something like Android?

No, its managed in a far more simple manner than that.

You don't need to worry about that (as far as I know)! :p

Good choice Fet. I feel even better now a GT-R owner has one. :D

It is very nice, but coming from an iphone I agree the case could be a bit nicer. the front is very heavy compared to the back, I would have paid an extra few quid for another rim around the back of the phone.

Battery could be better but it is the same with most of these fancy phones.

Also the speaker being on the back gets muffled when it is on my duvet so I have to put it on the hard bed side table or face down. the speaker should really be on the bottom.

Not exactly massive issues. 1 week on I am still very happy.

I have just leeched loads of mobile numbers from hot girls on Facebook, time for some heavy breathing.

Does anybody know specifically how Samsung will deliver official updates for this phone?

Will it be via the Kies application? I.e. do I need to keep just periodically hooking it up and pressing the firmware update button to check. Or will it be an OTA update as with other Android phones? As a previous poster asked, this phone does appear to have had the manual OTA update check removed by Samsung.

I really really hope they do release a Froyo update as they have promised...

EDIT: Oh yeah, forgot to add, for anyone who hasn't tried it yet, get hold of LauncherPro from the app store and "Home Switcher". LauncherPro is a free replacement for Samsungs TouchWiz. Personally I much prefer it, I wasn't too keen on the iPhone esque side scrolling list of buttons, LauncherPro offers a really nice 3D "on-a-box" scrolling effect that is much quicker to use. It doesn't feel *quite* as responsive as TouchWiz at times, but on the whole its just as good, and tbh I find finding app icons much quicker with it. Lots of customization possibilities.

if you decide you like it, you can make it default with Home Switcher, then restart the phone and TouchWiz shouldn't be sat taking up memory. You can swap back to the default using the same process should you wish.

I'm sure anyone who knows much about Android knows about Launcherpro, but I thought i'd add it to this thread too :)

A colleague has just purchased a galaxy S and is having problems syncing his contacts.

He has copied them from his SIM to phone and set up his google account. He has then sync'd everything (including contacts) but nothing appears when he goes to his gmail accounts! The spinning circle spins for a few seconds them moves onto the next sync item (calendar etc).

Also when plugging the phone into his pc, sliding down the notification bar and selecting mount nothing appears on his pc! (Running on XP SP3).

Has anybody got any ideas?
