Tl;dr - glad I'm back with an s24 Ultra
I’m wondering if my experience mirrors others who have switched either way (iPhone – Samsung & vice versa).
I decided to try iPhone because I thought the simplicity, the “it just works”, the smoothness was an appeal, and as I can upgrade on a 3 monthly basis I thought it’s no biggie either way! So things like multi tasking, the more vibrant display, the pen etc.. I was willing to sacrifice to try the iPhone for the better smoothness and speed if the iPhone.
Well, I was surprised how poor the iPhone experience is, at first I liked it, but after a month it started grating on me!
So the “it just works” – turns out, iPhone apps can be just as buggy as on Android, and also the UI of iOS can, sometimes I had the dynamic island cut out in the middle of the screen, just a random black hole.
Speed – turns out the S24 Ultra feels smoother and reacts quicker! I have felt that installing apps and setting apps up is much quicker on the S24 Ultra.
The screen – my god it’s amazing, I don’t know if this is a different type of S24 Ultra but it feels better than my previous one, I think the previous one was an Indian version, this one was made in Korea, the screen is lovely, smooth, sharp, vibrant. I know Apple prides itself on the natural nature of things like the screen, camera etc.. but I was quickly finding the screen dull, however I wouldn’t say it was dimmer than the S24 Ultra, both were fine in any sort of light conditions, however the S24 Ultra can go dimmer.
Multi tasking – I didn’t think I’d miss it, but I sure did, even for simple things like going to the shops, I have a shopping list one half of the screen, my Sainsbury’s scan and go on the other half, also when scanning bar codes, the S24 Ultra is instant at picking them up, it was a nightmare on the iPhone.
S-Pen – nice to have, especially for planning routes via Ride w/GPS on the web app, you need the pen to effectively use it.
Camera – I feel portraits are better on the iPhone (slightly), also motion – however using the camera assistant and enabling quick tap shutter seems to help, in low light you can still get blurry movement, but so you do on the iPhone as well. One thing that was niggling me from the beginning I was sure that pictures taken on the iPhone, when you blow the picture up they became blurry, lacking detail, and after going back to the S24 Ultra I can confirm indeed, the S24 Ultra holds more detail on zoom. The S24 Ultra also is less washed out in the pictures than the iPhone.
One of the issues I had with my previous S24 Ultra was changing the zoom, weird artifacts appeared switching the cameras, however that’s gone, and issue is screen grain, I’m sure there is a very, very faint grain that I didn’t notice with the original S24 Ultra I had, however, it doesn’t bother me.
Battery life – indeed, slowly improving, weather it’s better than the iPhone no idea yet.
The square corners of the S24 Ultra – it can cause discomfort, however my case has the handle on the back, so that avoids that, I like the look of the S24 Screen better, it’s better than having the curves, just feel like the S24 Ultra screen is more useful.
Mobile reception – weirdly this became horrendous on the iPhone, the S24 Ultra is night and day better with keeping signal, especially 5G.
The back swipe, missed this so much, it was infuriation on iPhone having to press at the top right, or press “done” etc… navigation is once again, a breeze.
I’ve also decided I really dislike the way iOS works in general, the lack of customisability which I was aware of, just didn’t think I’d miss been able to do what I wanted, also all the setting for apps within the settings screen.
I don't miss Face ID either, the fingerprint scanner is responsive enough that the difference in time is negligible.
