Samsung LS34E790C - Curved 34" 21:9 super-wide

the review people have been waiting for, for the Dell U3415W is up on TFT Central btw, since the Thread for the monitor has been locked i thought id mention it here.

Anyone find that when screen 'wakes up' programs re-size to something much smaller and move to the top left corner of the screen? I installed the monitor drivers and its connected via display port to an EVGA GTX 980 SC.

How do I fix this?

Yes, experiencing the exact same issue. I've played around with power settings in windows and the off timer on the monitor itself but so far hVent found a solution

The reviewer got a good sample with low IPS glow and BLB. If it had been bad (I've no idea of the RMA rates on these LG panels, but it's a common standout complaint), then a lot of what he said would be completely moot for a fair amount of users. Get a bad BLB sample and you'd return the thing immediately, no matter how good it is in other areas.

I'm surprised reviewers rarely, if ever mention outstanding quality control issues, perceived RMA rates, reliability and customer service. Possibly in their terms of contract ???? Dunno :)

@powering off and windows resizing. I used to get that, but now I don't - can't remember how I fixed it. Maybe have a closer look at windows power settings as there's a lot there to adjust. http://www.thewindowsclub.com/screen-resolution-changes-windows ?

We don't have contracts. At least Freelancers like me and Baddass don't. We do sometimes have certain agreements with manufacturers and their PR companies, but it's usually done out of respect if nothing else. We often review models before a significant volume of user feedback is generated. And we aren't privy to anything but the same anecdotal and in many cases highly biased information that the general public is regarding customer service and reliability. We aren't given any insight into RMA rates - that is known by retailers and the manufacturers and not generally shared with us. Over time we get a feel for that sort of thing for certain models if users share feedback to us privately (by emails etc.) and I'm keen to encourage that. But it's beyond the scope of a review to discuss that. And I'm very open in my reviews that colour balance (in some cases gamma) and uniformity can and does vary between individual units of the same model.

The U3415W has a constant level of glow, which I can confirm from my testing is reduced somewhat compared to on a flat screen of a similar size. I got a sample with worse black uniformity than TFT Central, however. You'll see this and the effects of it in the review - giving you the other side of the coin, so to speak.

Ah OK PCM2 - I wasn't having a dig and you explained it all perfectly. I can understand that there's so far a reviewer can go before straying into hearsay :)

Indeed. :) I just wanted to make sure anybody reading this understood as well. And what my review of the Dell will demonstrate, amongst other things, is that manufacturers and their PR companies aren't always into 'cherry picking' the best samples for us reviewers. I know some users think that's what they do. :p

Also I've seen two samples of the S34E790C and ironically the one that Samsung actually 'selected' to send me was a little worse than the random retail sample. But they were both great when it came to lack of excess backlight bleed and all that. :)

Is it cheeky of me to ask if the Dell is still your best Ultrawide yet? :p

When I asked about the Samsung in comparison to the others:

It depends what you're using it for. I'm not going to give too much away before publishing the reviews, but unless you're doing 'colour critical work' it gives the more enjoyable experience in my opinion. ;)

I should also add that if you do a lot of text heavy work and are really particular about sharpness then the Dell may also have the edge. But for gaming, movies and general purpose use I feel the Samsung has more to offer - as long as you take the time to tweak it.

Which LG are you referring to? The 34UC97 has some apparent issues with its responsiveness as well. TFT Central haven't reviewed that so there isn't a good deal of data to go on though. PRAD don't look at a good enough spread of response times, but did confirm poor input lag at least.

Ah, okay. I was generally talking about other ultrawides, including the flat AOC and so on.

Not really interested in VA panels, the colour shift would drive me nuts.

AFAIK, and I'm pretty sure is that only the Samsung uses another panel type. AOC and Dell all buy and modify their panels from LG.

I've had two LG's.. sent them back cos of BLB. Would've kept one of them if it wasn't for that, even though it's not as responsive/lag free as the Samsung. The colour shifting bothered me at first on this monitor, having regressed back from an IPS; plus the banding on low res images (skies in some games) - but I'll take those over BLB anytime.

Yes, both that and the other flat models (including AOC u3477Pqu) seem to be better for responsiveness than the curved AH-IPS models.

nice ninja edit there! ;)

Glad to hear that anyway as that is the main thing that I really dislike about my 29um65 :( But then I am extremely sensitive to motion clarity!

Oh, the flats are better than the curved models for gaming?

Well, crap.

Technically, yes. But not everyone will notice this difference. I'd say the figures on paper make it seem a bit worse than it actually is. I hope that people will find my subjective impressions in the upcoming review useful for that reason, as I don't want people to be put off by some ugly-looking figures that may not matter to them in the end.
