Samsung LS34E790C - Curved 34" 21:9 super-wide

Technically, yes. But not everyone will notice this difference. I'd say the figures on paper make it seem a bit worse than it actually is. I hope that people will find my subjective impressions in the upcoming review useful for that reason, as I don't want people to be put off by some ugly-looking figures that may not matter to them in the end.

Well, I currently game on a U2713HM and can't say I've noticed anything from there, but before that I had the Hazro 27", and before that the old Dell 'crystal AG' 23" monitors.

If the figures aren't different from those then I guess I won't notice it, depends what you're comparing it to.

I'm a man of aesthetics so it would be kinda lame to have to buy an LG/AOC after all and have it clash with the one U27 I plan to keep. I'd have to buy two then! :p

Oh, the flats are better than the curved models for gaming?

Well, crap.

Having used both a flat and a cruved 34" monitor, I'm now firmly of the belief that the curved ones are a gimmick - useful if you want people to go "is that monitor curved?", not useful for much else. And any kind of photoshop work is odd on a curved monitor.

I've got an AOC U3477PQU and couldn't be happier.

That was one of my main fears, tbh.

Nice conflict of opinions though, but good to see someone who has used both. :D

:confused:Photoshop work?? I never ever mentioned that....

if you mean this about the banding on some poor bitmaps?

  • 1 and 2 are screen clips.
  • 3 and 4 are from my camera phone (overexposed of course).

FYI all - I'm posting up images to this subreddit.... don't know how long I'll keep doing it, but it's fun for now.https://www.reddit.com/r/WidescreenWallpaper/ Click on 'view images' on the tabs at the top for a better experience.

I mean in regards to amigafan2003's comment and what you thought about it in regards to what he specifically said (relating to the curve on his photoshop work).

I wouldn't go with a curved VA screen, only IPS. So the banding wouldn't be an issue for me. I was just talking about the curve specifically.

Well, I'm an architect so this thing is for home use really. No, for any critical design work, especially with straight lines then I'd go for flat irregardless of technology (and I'd go IPS over VA of course anyway). The thing is: your brain rewires quickly to using this gentle curve - whereas before I saw a slightly convex shaped windows (ie the top and bottom) - now, I simply don't notice it and it feels completely natural. Think Minority Report :)

That's as best as I can sell a curved monitor. You'll have read about gaming on it; just to say it helps a little, but it's the aspect ratio and sheer size that impresses first. EDIT: if you're in doubt, go flat. Try and demo one before you ever make the plunge.

Yeah, I'd demo if I could but don't think it is possible from where I am.

In either case, thanks for that. I don't know if I would be able to adjust to the curve so well - I'd have a 27" monitor on top of the curved one, so switching from one to the other, wouldn't it kind of mess up trying to get used to the curve?

And I'm presuming you didn't notice the slower response times of the curved one if you say you prefer them for gaming like that.

Don't forget the Samsung has a completely different panel type to the other curved monitors. It might have a better response time than even the flat IPS panels, in fact I'm pretty sure it does If I've read all that's been said correctly.

I remember a few months back I bought the BenQ BL3200PT and the response times and input lag literally made games unfun for me. This Samsung on the other hand feels extremely responsive and is a joy to game on so far.

No. I'm guessing that the LG, AOC and Dell will not be close to the Samsung in terms of response time and input lag and that's solely based on the panel type. I only had a flat LG and now own curved VA, so I can't comment on a curved IPS... can't imagine there'd be a big difference, so basically VA wins here. PCM2's reviews will be revealing I'm sure in any case.

Having said that, gaming on the flat LG seemed perfectly fine to me. I don't have the reactions of a fruit-fly anymore, but I'd like to think I'd notice any notable drawbacks in that department.

Ah, okay, good stuff there. (I just now noticed the I'm from Aberdeen comment :p) If you could go flat on the Samsung though, would you?

Aberdonian? You lot are a right bunch of tight fisted *******s up there - even the seagulls carry their own sandwiches.

Flat on the Samsung? .. I really truly don't know. Every picture you see of these curved monitors exaggerates the curve - it feels natural at this size to me. If you went ahead and got one, I bet that you'd be uncomfortable for the first day and completely in awe the next, presuming you can calibrate the thing properly :)

Well Dundee is a complete ****hole, so :p

Fair enough then, I can calibrate properly. My only concern was distortion affecting my perception of straight lines in photoshop/landscape photography and the like.

Lol! You're right about that actually :)

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9Wb6WHiH4nk. Seriously, it does make a good case.

If you're into photography, then get an IPS over a VA as the colours are more natural looking. I personally wouldn't see a problem working with photographic images at all on this monitor. Web design it'd be good too. Vector design I haven't tried, but I can't imagine it to be a bad experience by any means. As I said, the curve doesn't register with me at all anymore - it's just doing it's job in the background.

Sigh ocuk said they could only see one dead pixel and have shipped my monitor back to me. They didn't even look at the mark behind the screen that others have I'm so annoyed now. I'm just gonna reject it and send it back under dsr. They should have called me first.

Unfortunately I'm returning mine because of a red tint on the left hand side of the monitor. While it's subtle, it covers a substantial portion of that side of the screen so if I have two documents/pages with white backgrounds on either side, the left one will be visibly darker with a slight red tint. I will get a replacement though since I really like this monitor.
