Samsung LS34E790C - Curved 34" 21:9 super-wide

@PCM2: A very well written review and you give it high marks as well :) Many thanks (and I think I'll make a small donation to your site soon).

I really like this monitor and everything you say rings true. My personal drawbacks with this Samsung are:

  • Colours being too punchy sometimes. Is this image to punchy for you lot?
  • Black levels and contrast on some images are, from time to time way too much, ie the 'black crush' as you describe.
  • Banding on some poor bitmaps http://imgur.com/a/v7wEa (First two are screen clips; the second two are overexposed camera phone). This is a drawback in VA (just like colour shifting), so I suppose I can't complain - but it seems like a step backwards in time. BTW: I posted that image before, but didn't get a bite :)
And that's it. Great monitor, though too pricey atm.

Review of the Dell version is ongoing, I'm sure you can appreciate that reviews of that depth don't write themselves.

@SaL<XXX

We didn't find any image too punchy, but being quite used to various 'similar' monitors with such contrast could be why. The colour gamut of the monitor also gives some colours a bit of extra intensity (maybe the reds in that image you showed would stand out against the white with a lot of 'punch'). I couldn't look at that particular image though, the monitor is all packed away. I notice significant banding in the screenshots on the Dell U3415W, it's just that the source images are banded. A monitor displaying that correctly would show banding anyway, it wouldn't smooth it out.

And donations are always appreciated to help support this kind of work. :)

P.S. The input lag section got messed up. Now fixed.

Well opened the box... once again they have put in the wrong plug lol. its the one with 3 things on the end instead of the figure of 8 one. SO I went to get the replacement plug that they sent me for the last monitor...Opened the packet and surprise surprise the replacement plug is also the one with 3 things on the end lol. I sent OCUK a message asking if there drunk when they sent these out as I just found that comical.
Luckily I found myself the right type of plug in one of my draws.
Booted the monitor up... put up an all white screen and cant see any scuff marks or dead pixels so that's great. No red tint visable this time but I wont bother calibrating it until later once its had time to settle. It always best to run it for a while first before calibrating to let the colours settle.

So from my first impressions... no dead pixels that I can see..no scuff marks behind the screen and no red tint . The monitor has a slight tilt to the left but so did my other 2 so that doesn't bother me.
Overall at the moment its looking good and I will see how the contrast ratio measures up to my others when I calibrate it later. My first one would only calibrate to a contrast ratio of 1700-1800 while my second one was between 2200-2300 so that tells me the second one was much better uniformity wise.

So far im happy with what im seeing.

Congratulations! finally you received good one you make me smile :) 1-10 is good, lottery. Enjoy

Thanks. Have you ever calibrated using the xrite software that comes with the i1 display pro? The closest I can seem to get it to 6500k using just the monitor colour settings is about 6524K and then I let the software do the rest but it always seems to increase reds too much.
Are there any better programs I can use the I1 Display pro with?

Haven't used it for a long time. TFT Central uses other software with their X-Rite hardware, so might be worth checking over there.

Are there any pictures showing how sharp the text looks? I'm going to be using my monitor for a lot of programming so if the text looks bad enough I may go with the Dell instead.

It doesn't look so bad that it would be apparent on a photograph. In fact I even took macro shots of text and compared to the Dell but the difference wasn't clear in the shots. It's something you'll have to see and judge for yourself I'm afraid.

ive come to the conclusion my drivers are borked when i changed from amd to nvidia then back to amd, i reinstalled crysis 3 and it looked nice enough but i was only getting 24fps and the 290 was only getting 60% usage.

i did a fresh windows install last night but not had any time to reintall the games yet

hmmm I haven't really noticed any difference in the sharpness of the text on this compared to the others. It just looks the same to me. Im running it at 150% though so that could be why but I really don't see any difference.
Finally got a keeper anyway. No dead pixels...no marks... no red tint...Theresa little bleed in the bottom right corner but all 3 sets I had also had that but once I cranked the brightness down to 20-30 its pretty much not visable.

I spoke to the technicians today from OCUK regarding the subtle red tent on the left portion of the screen. They said they found no such issue and we're adamant about this since they tested it thoroughly.

I think I may not have inserted the display port correctly? Is it supposed to click firmly into place so that you can't just pull it out? I'm slightly baffled since I had no other issues using a GTX 980 with the supplied DP cable (which they tested), although I did have some shiny texture flickering in dragon age cutscenes.

It's coming back tomorrow hope I can fix this on my end.

My first one had a red tint mate and that was the reason it went back. it had it on the left side and the right side of the screen and OCUK replaced the monitor for me so I guess they saw it too. The two replacements didn't have it so it was definatly an issue on the first. My third one has no red tint at all and it looks great so im glad I didn't accept the first. I think some of these screens do have the red tint because others have mentioned it too but its the luck of the draw.

The problem was that the tint was on one side covering a substantial portion, it was unmissable. The fact that they found no issue indicates a problem on my end. I wonder what it could be.
